carbs intimidate me....I have riden harleys for 5 years, and am buying my first Buell (haven't owned a bike for 1.5 years) I found a 98 whitelightning with only 1700 miles. I know the first thing I want to do is open it up, but in the past I have always let the dealer do my carb rejetting. Anybody on the forum live near Greenville, SC want to help me with my first one? There seem to be two different dynojet kits, is the more expensive one worth it? Where can I find out the best jet sizes to use....I am fairly mechanicly inclined, should I just get over my carb intimidation????? Thanks! Danny

Danny,
Look at the information at the top of the page. You don't really need the DynoJet kit as any "decent" dealership or independant aftermarket shop should be able to sell you just the parts or jets needed. But before you go planning on swapping out jets and such you might try to inquire what is already in there as most (many, some, all,.... ) Buells have already been rejetted by previous owners or knowledgable shops.

Buy it, ride it, go from there. A carb is just a fancy straw for the engine. ;)

Dwike, I'm not much of a mechanic but I think the CV carb and the Edelbrock Qwiksilver carbs are pretty easy to work on.

I got great help on my CV carb from the guys at www.sportster.org, but the guys here are just as sharp (if not better).

The Qwiksilver II was brought quickly up to snuff with the help of Fireman Jim and Gordon Buehle.

No worries, eh?

I should probably be there for a little while, unless the b'tards who broke into a van last Friday here at work decide to come back for bikes this time. A guy lost about $3000 worth of stuff and nobody saw a thing, happened between 7am-11am. New past time here is to look out the window for awhile everytime someone gets a cup of coffee.
Anyway, I plan to be there. A small group of people from work and some of their friends are getting together after work on various types of bikes so I'll probably arrive with them. Unless they make me nervous then I'll just show up via a different route. But they should be okay to ride with. probably

You going to be on two bikes tonight, or just the one, eh????? ;)

Damn you Blake I can't believe you missed this one! US of A National Ride to Work Day and the advertising pic is of a German motorcycle? Doesn't this warrant a new topic \ debate \ argument on the quick board?

Greg,
No you are not wrong; you said I was wrong. Like I said you seem to enjoy telling people that they are wrong. That is a rude thing to do, and when done deserves a modicum of explanation. Lacking any explanation, it is insulting. Add smart ass comments and you've got the makings of a bona fide confrontational asshole. Further aggravate the issue with condescending remarks such as "Lighten up son..." and you're well on your way towards losing the respect and good will of those you belittle.

Ron,
If I were in the market, I'd pay at least $6K for your S3T. The mileage may scare away the ignorant. My dad has sold his Gold Thing, and I'd love to get him on a well sorted S3T, but he won't be in the market for a new bike until this fall. He has a bike at the Summer place already. The Gold Thing was the winter ride here in Texas.

Rocket,
You have the mistaken impression that I'm some kind of nationalist. I'm not. I can't tell what kind of bike that is in the ad though. You say it is German. What is it?

BG,
That is one cool looking Guzzi. It's been out for quite some time I think. The aftermarket version of the V11 Sport. You know what really helps to make a sport bike look good? Putting hiding the muffler(s). Stick a big old ugly can on the side of that Guzzi and it would ruin the whole look. Honda finally figured that out with the CBR600RR, but the resulting bung hole impersonation leaves something to be desired... errr bothers me... errr... you know what I mean, right?

That's no aftermarket V11. The MGS/01 is a new chassis. Not much to it, I'd like to see under the bodywork.

Along with the upcoming Griso and Breva 1200, Guzzi will have some exciting products better suited to us full frame fatsos. Of course they will be slammed for using an old V-Twin motor from 1953.

Blake,
It has been said that he who has never been wrong has never done anything. I don't enjoy telling people they are wrong but I also don't seem to have much regard for tender egos.

If you followed the link I provided you can see that the V&H engine is a very different engine. I don't suppose it will sooth your ego any for me to point out that all piston driven engines have some things in common with some other piston engines. If you choose to believe that it somehow resembles a Buell engine more than a V-Rod engine that's your opinion. My opinion is that it doesn't have enough in common with either engine to make a valid comparison. Thus my statement. But hey, even though it didn't seem to make you feel better, I did give you credit for being closer to right.

A couple more examples of why the V&H lump is not like a Buell engine:
It uses side-by-side connecting rods, like the V-Rod.
It uses belt driven rather than gear driven cams.
It uses plain bearings.

If you want to learn more about the V&H engine CW or Motorcyclist did a pretty extensive article about a year and a half ago.

No one likes to be wrong but I learned long ago to get over it because Life Happens.

Blake I see that your prima donna behaviour towards Greg has obviously clouded your sense of humour. It was meant as a freekin joke that's why the smile! No implication of national anything , just the fact that you're Cpt Badweb and one of those male bonding kind of hands across the ocean sort of things old fart, but never mind I'll bond elsewhere for now. Anyways seeing as how your arse seems to have seen your face I thought I'd let you know too, I think Greg's right, so there, and very entertaining watching you dig that deep hole. Love ya babe x

The Guzzi looks sweet. But won't the engine get trashed if the goose low sides? Or do they sell really long frame sliders? Just curious. Nice looking bike.

Rocket,
Unlike me, Greg is ALWAYS right. LOL! Cripes, I told him he was right, and he continues to argue. And about what I have no idea. Thank heaven he's not backing JQ and the AMAPR liars. LOL! Thanks for humiliating me back to reality. I gotta be careful about the holes I dig, there's still oil down yonder in these parts.

Greg,
Did you miss the part where I said "You are not wrong"? You can stop arguing now, really. But if it titillates you, please feel free to continue pointing out each and every minute wrongness I utter here. God forbid my egregiously wrong opinion of the V&H drag bike engine might spread throughout the internet corrupting the minds of the hapless and the innocent. Bless you for pointing out my ignorance and utter wrongness and for helping to spare all the potential innocent victims of such mind rotting wrongness.

That Guzzi is a gorgeous peice of work.

The BEST "sorted out" S3 sits in the shadow of Gotham's Williamsburg Bridge.

That advertisement, if properly leveraged, will do more for Buell than their first one ever did. I'd like to know what firm sold that to the Yamaha folks who HAVE to be feeling suckered.

Naionalist? Opps...it's a whole new world. Long gone are the days when the shore, geography and borders defined the limits of our ability to build intellectual teams. Don't get me started, I have written ad naseum on this. The last dinner I went to I sat next to a late New Zealander legend's wife, an Irishman, an Arizonian, a pair of neat designers (one from Argentina and both schooled in Pasadena at the same American school) and a gal I love from Park Slope. The "Nationlist" card? Well, as Road Thing would say "that dog no longer hunts".

Frame? What frame? I don't see a frame!!! I think they must have bolted the steering head right to the engine and the swingarm pivot must be built right into the rear of the tranny.

No Frame, how cool is that. Britten recycled.

Either Mr. Ghezzi or Mr. Brian (I forget which) is on the payroll at Guzzi and is doing the MGS/01 project. That explains a few things.

If the MGS-01 has more than 100hp at the rear wheel, and is reasonably nice to ride, I think I would actually open my wallet and buy one.
Beautiful.

Ghezzi&Brian maximized its performance in the BOT and SUPERTWIN championship races and we know that a great deal can be asked of this motor.
More precisely 87 HP and over 225Km/h can be achieved.

Ya may wanna check out...

the MSG-01 is in the future for Moto Guzzi (I want to say 2005, but I could be wrong), along with a larger Breva.
