That's the best description of an S1 I've ever heard.

There was a statement on "another" forum about Vance and Hines the # 1 killer of Buell Riders, do I need to put the stock pipe back on?

Ken...Upgraded to the new mounting bracket from Buell when adding the V&H on my X1 and have no signs of cracks or potential failure in 5.0k miles. Muffler is late 2002 production if that means anything.

That would be a 5700cc bike.

"Interesting article at Motorcycle Daily - Steel vs Aluminum frames"

very interesting. The Ducati seems to have had a very short development period to produce a results producing bike.

Last week our sysadmin advised that the site would be going down this afternoon, possibly tomorrow afternoon. The server is being physically moved from one location to another and we are also getting our own stand alone hot rod server. No more shared access. We be selfish now. This will allow things like BadWeB email accounts and such. Will share details later.

The main thing is that if you cannot access the site, please give it a day. Some ISP's don't update their DNS server as often as others and so instead of knowing the address of the moved BadWeatheBikers.com, they may still have the old DNS address and so anyone trying to find the site through that ISP will get an error message.

If you want to be notified of when the site is back up and running, activate email notification in your user profile for the "Suggestions for a Better BadWeB" topic and when we come back online, I'll let you know.

See y'all later.

Doncasto posted a great picture of the new versus the old mount, so great in fact it has been moved to the appropriate place in the knowledge vault.

"...Heard anything on new Buells?"

I got a big envelope from Buell the other day and, expecting it to be an announcement of something new, found a 2003 brochure!!? Except for the XB9SL, that's last year's news. What a letdown especially after reading about the XB9S void in Cycle World's Naked Bike test. Somebody please inject some enthusiasm in the Factory.

Interesting article in new MCN on disc brakes.Tells advantages of new radial mount and monobloc calipers.Specifically named the new Firebolt caliper as one most prone to distortion/deflection under hard braking pressures.Maybe why the racing guys are putting on normal dual discs????

Nevco1,
During Arizona Bikeweek in 1997 there was a Boss Hoss who ran BattleTrax. Reg could have timed him with a sundial but he never touched a cone.
With all the hop up parts available for small block Chevies this should be the ideal bike for the "Horsepower Uber Alles" crowd. With the new megawide round profile tires you might even be able to herd all those ponies down the Interstate at a reasonable speed.
Hmmm??? You know with some of the straightest roads in the country right there at his front door a salesman like DaveS ought to be able to sell a ton of those. But then I guess a ton would only be above two and a half of them.

Wadda ya think Dave??

Greg ;)

One of the things about race bikes and race bike brakes that seems to be over looked is that race tracks are super smooth. The bumpiest track in the world is smoother than than the smoothest street and therefore, unsprung weight isn't as important to a racer as it is to you and I. That and we don't go 150 mph and jam into a 40 mph - 180º left turn, over and over again.

A light weight front wheel is just what the XB9 needs, and the biggest, baddest front brake in the world isn't what any of us need.

I had an adventure riding back from work today...had a hell of a rain storm to ride through. Cars were crawling and driving into ditches as the roads started to flood. I just sped along maintaining the speed limit. I had no idea a streetbike could stay so stable going through water that high. My feet had to hang in the breeze 'cause the wake from my front tire knocked 'em right off the pegs. Kinda scary but still fun.

The XB9's completely obsoleted by XB12's this year? I'll be extremely surprised if that comes to pass.

Why not give the same engine to the Sporty crowd? Just tune it for more low end instead of top end. That makes perfect sense.

I dont believe it either. I think they will continue to sell the 984cc's versions but at a much lower price than they are currently. I think they will be around $8000-8500 & the new 1200cc version will be $10,000 or just a bit over.

Personally? I don't know why they would not just bump the XB's up to XB12's. I would do it if I were them. An interesting side question is if the blast would then become a 600 as well.

Here is my guess as to why they did an XB9 first instead of an XB12 (which was I think the right thing to do).

1) Stop swinging for the fences, and try and just consistently get on base. There was tons of new and unproven technology in the bolt, the engine needed to be a slam dunk, which is what the doubled up blast motor looked to be. Buell could not afford any more reliabilty issues.

2) An XB9 had a prayer (though a little one) of being allowed to race with the 600 inline fours, and I think Erik, probably against his better judgement, wanted to give it a chance to happen.

3) The character of the 9 is well suited to the bike for just about everyone on the planet except motorcycle journalists and people that don't own XB9's. Funny how all the people that actually own these things don't seem that upset with the current motor. The bike is balanced, and while more power is always more fun, the current bike *does* have *enough* for 95% of the people that will buy them (including me when I someday afford my XB9S).

And now my guesses as to why they will just drop in a 12, though maybe not for another year (I suspect Harley may get it for a year first), all stated relative to my above theories.

1) Buell, after consistently getting slammed by the same pitcher with the same pitch, decided to stop swinging for the fences and just get a solid single. They swung, they hit, and all of a sudden find them selves standing on third base with two runs batted in. The crowd is happy, but does not really understand what just happened. But all of a sudden, if you look closely, you can see a level of raw terror on the pitchers face that was never there before, he knows the whole game just changed and the he is beat. And you can look at the guy on third and see that he knows that he can now drop a triple any time he damn well pleases, and that he can turn it into a home run if he just keeps running when he hits third. He worked it out.

2) The AMA has given, once more, a big "FU" to Buell. Buell, I hope, gives it right back and puts the last nail of irrevelancy in their coffin by producing a stock street sportbike that breaks the "race on sunday sell on monday" mantra of the sheep, and derails the whole AMA gravy train. It would (hopefully) force people to recognize that a good street sport bike is a very different thing then a good track sport bike. Many sport bike riders may be sheep, but if they see their asses being handed to them by everyone that shows up in their rear view mirrors on an XB on all their favorite roads, they will start to get a clue.

3) Modern motorcycling is no longer about balance. Instead having a bike that most riders will only be able to touch 80% of the performance envelope of, we seem to want bikes that we can only touch 50% of the performance envelope. And I think the "race on sunday sell on monday" link is more about the emperor wearing no cloths, the "publish magazine review on monday sell on tuesday" link is *much* stronger. So give the jaded journalists what they are asking for, get them off our backs, and just get the stupid good review. It may have even be a little strategic... they got just about every magazine review I have read to say "fantastic bike, love it, only fault we could find is that we want more power". Buell should give a corporate shrug, noting that even the "underpowered" bolt is able to run nose to nose with a "100 horsepower" f4i, but overpower the stupid thing anyway. Get the review.

Finally, I think they will do it because it barely changes their costs. They have to develop, retest, and recertify everything, which is expensive and painful, but that is a one time charge. The incremental (per bike) costs of going to 12's is virtually nothing. Change tooling, order different parts, continue as normal. And remember that the one time charges are spread across each involved bike sold, which is now in theory, if they update the blast to match the bolt, *every* single* bike* Buell sells*.

Just all fun speculation on my part.

Greg,
I think I'll stick to selling bikes that can corner, even if we don't have many curves right here.
You coming back this summer? How about for the 20th anniversary?

Reep, I seriously doubt that they'll just drop a 1200cc motor into the existing XB frame. Reason: lack of adequate fuel capacity.

looking at an S1 with a twintail on it. i might buy it but want to know if a solo tail can be easily installed on such a bike? or is the frame different? is it as simple as just swaping the tail?
also, does anyone know the part number for the CF S1 solo tail? shown in this picture

S1 CF Tail

thanks for your help!

Kahuna, it's a simple swap, the twin has a bolt-on piece to extend the frame.

Ara... good thought, had not thought about that...

But would it really make much difference? The *worst* I have ever seen on my 1200 cyclone is 40 mpg, and average is closer to 45 (thanks to my rich factory main). The 9's can't be *that* much better, especially for just eating interstate (where I suppose one would care most).

How does the current XB range compare to the average GSXR1X9?

I just hope they point the tail pipe away from the sound test meters. What happened with the XB9's in that scenario for Australia and Europe was a big goof up.
