I give up, where are those iceracing link postings? I tried the search engine here but there are lots of words with "ice" in them (price, choice, advice, lice, police,....).

I think they were posted in the last few weeks someplace here.

Anyone know what size wrenches are needed to adjust an '01 shock? I bought 'em for a '99 and they don't work on the '01.

Wrench sizes for an '01 shock:

Adjusting nut is 60mm and Locknut is 52mm.

Hold adjusting nut in place and tighten locknut to 65-72 ft-lbs (88-98 Nm).

What are the stock suspension settings for X1s?

I'm doing a swap on my M2 using S3 forks. I figure I'm going to swap the fluid while I'm at it. Does anybody know of an online source with the instructions on how to do this? Thanks!

It is!
When I had dirt bikes, we used to run around on the lakes all the time.
There is racing about 4 times each winter. sometimes an oval track, sometimes a scramble type without the hills.
Lots of fun. You cannot believe how much traction you get with a properly prepared tire.

For those who don't know, you start with a fairly fresh set of knobbies. Preferably a hard track type with smaller tighter knobs. You then screw in the longest hex head sheet metal screw you can that will reach the base of the knob. Depending on the knob size we put in 1 to 4 per knob in every knob on the tire.
Do both front and rear tires.
Then take an old innertube, remove valve stem and slit around the inside center circumference of the tube.
Partially inflate a good tube and slip the slit tube over the good one as a protective layer.
Insert sleeved tube in tire and remount. Do not remove rimlocks! You really need them even more than on dirt. Do same for other tire.
After all the sheet metal screws and inertube liner is in place the wheels get pretty heavy. I've seen the extra weight mess up the spokes. Keep them tight!

Dress warm, go find a lake and have fun!
On a hard pack or icey lake a 250 or open class bike will smoke most sleds. Lots of fun!

The races are too much. Takes a bit if getting used to due to all the traction. You can lay the bike down far enough to drag pegs and bars. Wheelies out of corners are the norm.
The amount of ice thrown in the air is amazing. The first few corners of a race look like they are hidden in smoke until the wind blows the ice crystals away. Quads throw up so much you can barely see them.

When it's really cold (below zero), folks will pipe car exhaust over the bikes motor so it will stay warm enough to start.

If you ever get a chance to spectate or participate jump at the chance! It's quite the sight.

Traction varies on the number of screws in the tire. You can make it slip or stick. Such a tire can last indefinitely too, unlike road race tires that get replaced the same day after 3-5 sprints. Like Brad said, the traction can be unbelievable and peg dragging at high speed is possible. You can have enough traction to throw you too. The bikes above had enough slippage to get the rear around quicker for a longer straight shot since it was an oval track.
The adrenaline had me gritting my teeth so hard my jaw hurt for 2 weeks. And the bikes would die if they weren't WOT all the time. Lots of cigar shaped jet engine style heaters at the track, shock warmers are popular too.

I forgot about the too much tracton high sides!
I never did one but saw many. Ouch!
Now that you mention it, there were a few torpedo kerosein heaters. A little Honda generator to run them for the afternoon.
We didn't use heaters, we were in the poor part of the pits. Only the rich guys had real heaters.
Alot of the bikes were converted flat trackers. They barely had suspension that worked anyway, no need for heaters on them! However, they were the ones to beat. VERY quick around the turns.
It really was a teeth clencher. I knew a couple of guys that wore hockey type mouth guards to prevent chipped teeth. I'd completely forgotten about that! Thanks for reminding me.

Jeez, damn near makes me want to put an ice bike together! Hmmm, if memory serves, the first races were on New Years day.......

Do it Brad! You have 3 weeks to get those screws in! It'll take that damn long to do it too.

Most of the ones I saw were pretty old P.O.S.'s. A lot of late 70s and early 80s 2 and 4 stroke XR and CR types. Then there were the street bike conversions. Everything from 50cc to 1100cc. I doubt anyone paid over $500 for their bikes. The sidecar and sheet metal screws are where the money went!

Poor part of the pits? You weren't eating enough kraut and other gassy foods to keep the bikes warm?

Oops you're right about the date too. It was the 1st of January. I came home on the 2nd.

We had a pretty good mix of bikes at the last race I attended.
Not may POS types, the tech inspections were pretty strict.
Lots of CR's, Xr's, YZ's. Lots in flat track frames. Quite a few Rotax powered flat trackers.
The thumpers usually outnumbered the 2 strokes.

You're right about the screws, it would take about that long! Didn't have decent cordless drills back then, had to use a variable speed electric. I remember sitting in my living room drinking PBR and inserting MANY screws. I cleaned out 3 or 4 hardware stores stock for two tires. It was hundreds per tire but I don't remember exactly.

Ahh the memories....

Most of the time I'm looking thru the turn so I know when to climb back on and all around. When I'm not looking thru the turn, it's because I'm straining to pull my ass back up, because I went over too far. For those with an untrained eye, my form sucked. The guy next to us is doing it right. When you have to strain so much to pull yourself back up, to tend to use a jerky motion. (Shut up u pervs!) Being jerky unsettles the stability of the bike and can make you both eat ice. Other times I'm looking to see if my head is gonna get run over.

I smacked my head so many times, I...where am I and who the hell am I talking to?

Does sound like an offer, eh Mike? I wonder if Char is still willing to cook and do my laundry for a week.;)

I haven't actually ridden that kind of bike yet, only climbed around on one. Someday I will ride one.

Doubt I'll be getting back to Calgary anytime soon. I don't have a reason (woman) to go up there anymore. It was a long, cold and wet 3 day, 2305 mile ride to Calgary from Houston when I did it. It's about 1400 boring miles from Milwaukee. As a bonus they have Canada olympic park too. Did a bobsled run there too. That's a cool place.

Man I need to move away from TX. I wonder if I can get a union job on the assy line at HD. Engineering sucks.

Maybe I need to start checking into what the local laws are concerning setting up a racetrack on that lake...

I seriously doubt there are any restrictions, but loud pipes might help warn off the snowmobilers...

Today some dude on an ATV went flying by me outside with a deer dragging from the back. Guess he wanted a little more texture to his venison ! :crazy:

My Grandfather owned a Yamaha shop in Marine City Michigan. he sponsored racers all the time. Mostly TT and Ice racing on Lake St. Clair. My father bought my twin brother and I a Yamaha DT60 and put flat track handlebars on it and started us racing Ice at 11. We fought over who would race 3ed heat as there was only 3 heats a weekend and two of us.

My dad ran a big Honda 500 single flat track style bike and a lot of his friends ran Triumphs, Can-Am, and BSA bikes. We made our studding tool out of a cut off nut driver and a 1/2 inch sears drill.

They still run weekly races at the Port Huron (Michigan) motorcycle club on their private pond.

There was a guy in Rubber class who was tired of losing so much he built a Honda GOLD WING sidehack with 4 into 1 MEGAPHONE exhaust. That thing was so loud it hurt!

Never lost again though.

Would that Pizza be from Bugsy's Sports Bar. That is reportedly the best in Rhinelander. Not to mention the laundromat is only a few blocks away. I spend some time in both during the Tomahawk event this year. Was a real fun time.

FYI, the laundromat in Rhinelander has a constant supply of "Mom's" which make for fun conversation.

However, after three days on the road, I really enjoyed clothing that did not repel people as fast as my dysfunctional personality. LOL
