The current issue of Fuell has the production numbers for S1/S1W/X1, and they break down as follows: 96-98 S1: 4,292 units produced 1998 S1W: 2,184 units produced 99-02 X1: 3,656 units Total: 10,132 There are already more V-Rods out there than all S1/S1W/X1's combined. | ||

Particulary these two catagories..... Performance: Characterized by quick acceleration, top speed, and handling. Commonly referred to as "sport bikes". Standard: A basic, "no-frills" motorcycle with an emphasis on low price. Since, nothing in the HD stable fits these roles (and don't try to tell me a "Sportster" is a sport bike or an 883 is a "Standard" ).....could be a precursor, eh? As those market segments show the promise of growth, more Buell innovation and technology manifests itself in the HD line. Hmmmm...now who'd have thunk it?  | ||

Standard: Sure the 883 is a standard, how many more 883's are sold than Blasts? A bunch more. They are both "standards" Performance: V-Rod has 2 out of the three (acceleration and top Speed), the Buells have the Handling. They don't currently make one bike that has all three. Other people do, and cheaper too. Interestingly, Buell is trying to fight with the other "sport" manufacturers for only 20 percent of the total US market. Cruisers dominate in the US, with 59% of the market. Europe and Asia are exactly the opposite, "performance" bikes dominate. Europe also has the largest "standard" market segment. Do they sell Blasts there? | ||

Court . . .I've seen a fair number of V-Rods in the Chicago area, but absoluelty no privately-owned 9-class Buells spotted in the wild . . . . as for not aseeing any VRs in NYC . . .. I rode one at the intro a couple of years ago -- very nice motor, but I would definately NOT want to muscle that chassis around an urban environment Loki comin to Ukes? too cool . . . . it'll be nice to meet you, brother | ||

FWIW, V-Rods (or Nimrods as a buddy of mine half jested) are almost literally a dime a dozen around LA. I see WAY more of those bikes than I do of ANY Buell. A bit said. Funny thing about that bike is that I think it missed its targeted demographic. It was supposed to lure twenty and thirty something males but it seems to me that it's being bought by the 40somethings and up. Whatever. This is a Buell board. -Saro | ||

Saro, you are right about the age of the V-Rod buyers. How many early 20 yr olds have the $$$ to throw at a V-rod? They can afford $8000 for one of the competitions bikes, but throwing another $10,000 on top of that is awfully difficult. The owners I have met are all in the late 40's & up. PS, read your bio, damn your Blast problems sound like a mirror image of my X1's. | ||

Sign of future trends now? I was at a H-D/Buell dealership yesterday and while the big twins were attracting the most of the adult attention, guess where most of their kids were. Yep, gawkin' at the Buells. Don't get me wrong, a couple adults were looking at them too, but what struck me right away was that the majority of kids were pointing, looking, touching and walking around the XB's, while mom and dad did the same on the other side of the showroom. Dyna- I do truly feel your pain - though at least my bike is only half the cost of an X1 - so maybe I only felt half your pain or something. I dunno. As long as I can remember I've ALWAYS been better off doing my own stuff. A couple of times I had to deviate from that because of lack of workspace or a perceived lack of experience. I ALWAYS regretted that. Warranty schmarranty. I cancelled the extended thing the dealer sold us (which was transferred from the first bike). Didn't even have the rocker gasket or valve guide seals done under warranty on this second bike. It's still got a couple months left under the factory deal. All someone needs to do now is to make WARRANTY reapirs / recall repairs by home mechanics something a manufacturer must support. Until then I guess I'll not be able to take advantage. I guess it'd just not worth it for me to buy new... -Saro | ||

Sportster List Racing Team captures #1 plate @ Maxton! "Roadkill" took the ECTA motorcycle Championship @ Maxton, North Carolina yesterday & although #506 "Whiplash" has some chassis issues to be sorted out, it took a couple records too! Thanks to Aaron for his help, the XL-List Team holds records @ both Bonneville & Maxton with 3 different bikes in several different classes! Took some records back from Moto Guzzi this weekend too! We are bringin the other two down in the spring to run them in a little. The Buell ran better than expected, blew up the top end two weeks ago. Hey Paul...what a treat meeting the guys from Team Acceleration (sp)..Kurk(sp) & Don & the other guys. The XR750 was absolutely awesome...posted a speed of 135 something last I checked in with them. That's near the same as what my 1000 cc did their last year in production class. Oh, yeah the Moto Guzzi team took that 1000 P/PP record back at Maxton too...bumping it up to 138.200 MPH from my 135.925. Sydney Conn came by hisself with two of their bikes & ran them both after a long week of traveling just after Bonneville. I offered to help him out in any way, although he did most everything on his own. It was his Birthday too! Anyway, Paul...a great bunch of guys from your Team..had fun with them...I guess I heard the Buell S2 seized a piston...though I'm not sure of that fact..after a best run of 140 & some change.
