Ray,

I agree with your recent post and am truly sorry to know that some (no quantity reference) do experience common problems not attributed to abuse. I pray I don't and am using the knowledge and experience from this website to make the modifications to help insure this.

The downside to what I just said is that had there been no problems, this wealth of knowledge would not exist. Catch 22, eh? Thus, I still contend that the manufacturer should both invest in improving the quality of the new generation products and take responsibility for existing defects in design, materials and workmanship.

Why do I get the feeling we are saying the same thing? It is just that I am speaking in generalities and you are more specific. Might be the age old communications dilemma between engineers and salesmen. LOL.

The reason I chose generalities is that the board pretty well covered all that can go wrong recently and I was addressing who is responsible for what and Courts theoretical question of where should the money go. I firmly believe that existing problems should be resolved and that future products should neither repeat history nor create new problems. If properly implemented, we should all be happy campers and Buell will exceed its goals and objectives with respect to sales and corporate contribution.

Would like to meet you someday at an event. I have the feeling we will have a fun time.

Bill

José, you've been reading my mind! I was going to post a picture or three of you doing physical harm to your bike (Puya?) in a parking lot but I decided not to go there. Great wheelie but that's not you is it?. BTW, I'm a real wheelie wimp.

NCbueller, I switch BACK to X-1 bars from the S3T bars I put on the bike a long time ago.

I just got back in after a nice 150 miles. Uvas canyon road was CRAWLING with sherrifs! guys on cop DUAL SPORTS even. some big party out as a little harley biker bar out that way had em all riled up. Didnt get us! we were warned, Thanks to all those that signal the rest of us for these dirty, lowdown stinking trap tactics.

As I was heading out saw a guy on a yellow 748 Duck with a yellow BUELL vanson on. He saw me, pointed to his sleve, gave me a thumbs up and I power wheelied through the intersection on the light change. Some days are just better than others. and no a bottle of Michelob has nothing to do with it!

Sorry to hear your trapped today Jim, but I know you'll point that think at the horizon this week and grab us some records!

Be safe, and be fast!

Ray,

No that was not me. I'm a wheelie wimp too! I barely got that shot off before he roared by me.

To your point, if Battletrax is considered "extreme or abusive" use, then guilty as charged, but really, then what does Buell imply with their "smiley burnout" commercials and the european ads full of wheelies and stoppies???

is that misleading advertising?

Choptop - Concerning the FZ1. I bought a new '02 recently. It's a great bike, I guess, but Blake would say, a bit appliance-like. In fact, it kinda reminds me of my trusty Ronco turnip twaddler. Just like the Ronco it's quiet in operation, reliable and has 140 hp at the crank. You might ask Ferris for his opinion...he's ridden mine. He told me it reminded him of a big ol' dog. That kind of confused me. I'd've' thought that a Buell would be more likely to shed (parts.)

I'd put a smiley face here...but they've disappeared. Do you suppose Blake took away my smiley faces?...or did Ferris just use them all up?

I am just a lurker. Was in the market for a S-2, but got a ST-1100 instead. Very appliance like, but I am willing to take it anywhere tomorrow. I like it. However, when I sell my Beemer, a S-1 will be very nice, and I am trying to talk my girlfriend into a Blast. Regarding Court's question, wouldn't a dollar spent on quality give you a dollar for warranty? I think Jose is right on the 3-4 year warranty. It would show confidence on Buell's part. Retroactive on all 2003 models. As far as the recent conversations go, I've been here long enough to wonder why the patch fines weren't issued already? Remember, one man's vulgarity, is another man's lyric. Some TV judge said that.

Is this really a true statemnent, i mean really you may have the ability to work on your own bike, and you may be very good at it, however if you bike was under warranty, and was less than a year old(first 2 times) would you pay for your own parts to fix it, or would you do your best to allow the dealer to do his job, i am not trying to be a jerk, however its this kind of misinformation that at times leads to falsehoods that can turn into facts if repeated enuff times, if you do not know what the circumstances are please do not assume, it does not help the situation and actually may cause more harm than good, this disscution is after all an attempt at helping Buell, not creating more rumors or speculation for the uninformed

Yeah...like that factual *sarcasm* information about the "POS" Buells, and the likewise ill-willed sentiments.

I don't believe I was not misinformed when I made my statement. It was my opinion...and it stands.

I don't believe in warranties...unless they're free.

First year is free(i think), you opinion is your own and that is great, but i think most would use there warranty given a chance, i mean really the bike is only 14 months old, and i think(my buell was used so i am not positive) the first year is free, but correct me if i am wrong,
And as you pointed out if you opinion is deserving so is Dynas after all, of course i was not refering to that but i will in the future try to be clearer, personally everyone is going to have an opinion, and that i think is a good thing, but if you want people to hear yours you have to be willing to hear others, but that of course is my opinion

Grndskpr, well stated. The origninal warranty comes with the bike, it's 'free', unless you void the warranty by adding race parts.

This is the gray area that bummed me out. I was told that if I added the factory race kit it would void my warranty, so I chose not to purchase the extended warranty. Well, in fact, Buell does honor 'some' claims even if you add the race kit.

Sort of depends on the dealership, who you are, and how you proceed with your warranty claim.

Seems to me that nothing is concrete with Buell, smoke and mirrors is their policy.

After reading all the posts about warrantees . . . I saw an ad on the tube last night (not for the first time, but actually processed the data for the first time) . . . it was a KIA ad, extollin thte virutes of their 10 year (!) warrantee. . . . seems to me that Audi did something similar right after the Fox nightmare, that is, offered industry-busting warrantees to dispell the bad dependability reputation that their products had gotten . . . .

I know that there is a cost associated with extending the warrantee, but, if the new scoots are as good as everyone would like to believe, that cost would be minimal, compared to the damage that is likely being done by the reliability issues we've all seen on recent tube framed Buells . . . .

I know, I know, just what the board needed . . .another $0.02

>>>Seems to me that nothing is concrete with Buell, smoke and mirrors is their policy.

That's an inaccurate statement.

as I relook at the statement it may be accurate that it "seems to you".
It is inaccurate as it pertains to Buell.
The policies are quite clear with regard to warranty. Interpretation may vary, the policy does not.

I might agree, if you had referenced the underwriter that does the "extended warranty", unless they have changed their policies.

Something we might forget regarding speding dollars on Quality vs Warranty...

A dollar spent on Q is spent RIGHT NOW. RIGHT FREAKIN' NOW. In fact, it's spent BEFORE right now. The money has to be spent months or years before the product ever gets out the door and generates revenue. Also, spending dollars on Q also means you're likely spending TIME on Q.

A dollar spent on W is spent at some indeterminate point in the future - and possibly not at all if someone only rides 2 or 3 thousand miles a year.

The W approach would seem to yield more working capital for a growing company.

PS - BUY A JERSEY! The quality of the shirt does not come through on a web site picture. They're very comfy and a great conversation piece.

>>>>>months or years
Years, about 3 in fact. (you can calculate discount rate now that you have the 36 month variable in the equation and know the cost of capital)

>>>>>before the product ever gets out the door
Let me take you one step further and make Q a "condition precedent" in the martix that ALLOWS a product to "get out the door".

>>>>>Also, spending dollars on Q also means you're likely spending TIME on Q.
Ergo, Time = PEOPLE....the one thing known that leaves a Cray Supercomputer in it's wake in terms of their ability to "perceive" and make judgements. People, also, have egos. This all plays into the huge equation we are going to build. If you are a management guru, and if it makes you feel more comfortable, go ahead and set "ego = ownership" so you can get your buzz word points for the day.

>>>>>The W approach would seem to yield more working capital for a growing company.
True. Working capital is important... note: you;ll need to go to "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" at this point....BUT, the ABILITY to produce working capital is more important and always precedes the production AND the production can NOT occur w/o the capacity.

Mull that over for a bit.......

Chop-
I brought up the secret of the muffler bearings that Aaron was using on his bikes about a year ago. I think his were sealed though.

I passed on the extended warranty due to the copayment. If I have to pay $50-$100 copayment for a $140 rocker gasket fix (where they just put back in another paper one) I said "forget it".

After my SuperTrapp fell off when the shop didn't tighten the front exhaust hanger bolt (they didn't give me the upgrade either) after changing the shock, I decided that I can break things a lot cheaper than they can.

Well Rick it does work both ways, ignoring the problems will never solve them, again counterproductive, so what is one to do, because what i have seen so far for every Dyna there seems to a Aaron/Blake/Rick, maybe the best solution is to discuss, not argue what the problems are, maybe even AGREE on something, or here is one better, What should Dyna/Buell do, here is the case study:
New bike, grenades 3 times in a 14 month period, dealership is of little help, bike is in the shop constantly, buell/HD can not get there warranty problems squared away(1 says one thing, the other says another concerning the race ecm) now with no bike and owing about double what its worth, a dealer unwilling to take it in on trade. What should he do, i am really interested in a realistic answer.
Now some will say sell it, but some of us are incapable of taking a $4000 loss, sorry i know it would kill me finacially to lose that much cash, so that in my opinion is a cop out, dealer seems to not care(there is more to that part but i will let dyna tell it he he chooses to, lets just say the dealer is giving him problems)The bike has NOT been beat any harder than some of the other X!'s i have seen out there, so again i ask what is one to do? Please refrane from profanity, just answer the question with your opinion, or what you think you would do, i really would like to hear an input that can be shared, now i know from other sites(read Ducati) people will get on any site they can find to make sure any new business is told to buy another bike, reverse advertising, and no matter what you do your not going to stop it, but i would really like to hear opinions as to how to solve this dillema
Maybe even Court could put in his .02, i would be very interested

Roger,
After the first failure (well ok, after the second. I'd give 'em one) find your Buell Zone Manager and discuss the bike with him and your issues and concerns about the motor in the future. Send him a follow-up letter. Discuss it with Buell CS and make sure they have a record of you.
In hindsight an extended warranty would have been a good thing, but I don't normally suggest it.

Best defense is a good offense. Go into your dealer as often as possible. No need to buy anything, just make sure you're known. Talk to your BZM whenever possible. Your dealer can tell you when he'll be around. When you have a problem discuss it in order : wrench, service manager, BadWeb ;), shop owner, Buell CS, Buell Zone Manager.

Talk to a lawyer. It might not do any good but. I had a car rental agency send me threating letters about a accident that was not my fault and was taken care of by the other persons insurance. The car rental agency was threating to sue me for damages. I have a lawyer buddy and he said no problem he would take care of it. I dunno what he said in his letter but I never heard from them again. Now it may not be practical to sue either the dealership or Buell. Kinda expensive, real expensive, but the threat of a lawsuit especially to a local dealer might make a difference. I would think the dealer would not want their name in the paper as being sued for poor service. That is what is known as bad press.

Roger,
My response does not address what Dyna should do now, nor does it address what Dyna should have done or anything else he may have done. It was just meant as ground rules for the general public regarding problem resolution and basically answered a question that wasn't asked.

I also did not ask a question so there is no need for an answer.

I've reread your post (sorry, I have trouble getting through them) and have really nothing to add. As far as I know Dyna is pursuing Wisconsin's Lemon Law (which I posted the text of and links to the other day) and that's probably going to be his best course of action.
