Awgrimm,

If you do a lot of straight up highway riding and the tires are particularly warn in the middle of the tread, this will tend to give a sloppy feeling in the corners....

I've drooled on the Ghezzi & Brian's Furia (Moto Guzzi) in person at the Concourso Italiano. Its freaking BEAUTIFUL. Sounds great too. Its really clean, slimmed down, extra parts trimmed off, real purposeful looking. The pictures dont do it justice.

FB,
Buy the XB, ride it to Kilgore. Put it in the back of my truck. Take it to Shreveport. Let Nallin Racing have their way with it. Ride it back home. Write an article for BTwin. Be famous again. :]

All,
Went drag racing for the first time ever tonight. I thought it would be easy. D'OH!!!

1st run. overshoot staging area, back up, boots sticking to tarmac (DAMN! That is some real sticky crap they put down!) Feathering clutch, watching lights, blow it. Red light, (RT=0.00s), wheelie, nail 2nd, wheelie, space out and forget about GP shifting, slam into rev limiter, fiddle with shifter, finally get 3rd, let off before finish line, forget to flip face shield down. ET 13.3s

2nd run. Struggle to get staged, finally get staged, hold revs at 3-4K rpm... red light, (RT-0.278s), wheelie badly, nail second, wheelie, smack rev limiter, ... ET 13.0s

3rd run. Staged like a pro. NO red light! (RT=.9s  ). Wheelie (almost loop), Wheelie, miss 2nd to 3rd shift, 12.5s ET.

4th run. No red light. Wheelie, Wheelie, smack rev limiter, wheelie, 12.5 ET.

5th run. No red light. Staged well. Wheelie, nail 2nd, no wheelie, DANG! miss 3rd to 4th shift. 12.3 ET, 113 mph.

I SUCK AT DRAG RACING!!! My buddy on his F3 racebike kicked my ass. It was his first drag racing experience too but he got there two hours ahead of me and had a bunch of practice runs. His best ET was an 11.93. I've ridden his bike. It's got more top end and is lighter. I consistently beat him to the 1/8th then lost out bungling the shifts. Woulda beat him outright on the the 5th run if I hadn't missed the dang shift! Gotta call Mr. Banke and ask him for a true GP shifter. Flipping the arm on the standard setup isn't quite cutting it. The throw ends up being too long. Will switch back to conventional shifting for now.

Will definitely try drag racing again sometime. It's only $15 at Hallsville Speedway on Friday nights. Every Friday evening. Run till 4AM if you are so inclined.

Aaron, can I borrow your long swingarm? :]

TEAM ELVES 2002

"I could write you pages of the lustfulness of moving swiftly" - T. H. Lawrence

Lawrence penned those words and captured the essence of what has resulted in our collective passion and collaboration that spawned TEAM ELVES.

It's time for my annual chat as we prepare to go. For the Salt Veterans, this is old news. For the Salt Virgins, consider these a working set of guidelines to insure you have a GREAT time!

YOU ARE PART OF TEAM ELVES.....when you arrive you'll see a 300' long pit area, Team Elves flags flying and a bunch of folks in Elf-Wear. First step is to head to the motorhome with the sign below and let us know you've arrived.

When you check in, don't be surprised to be asked to volunteer for any number of roles. This year we have more entrants than our wildest expectaions would have hinted at. Here's this years lineup of the Racing Elves:

130 Club Entrants

H.P. “Capt. Pete” Caldwell from Fernandina Beach, Florida
Rex Chaney from Clayton, California
Bob Gussenhoven from Tacoma, Washington
Nykk Keehner from Castro Valley, California

David Kuntz from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Tom McCarroll from Bellairs, Texas

Darryl Salomon from Hawthorne,California
Koen van der Linden from The Netherlands
Todd Williams from Stockbridge, Georgia
Michael Wozniak from Oakland, California

150 Club Entrants

Susan Wilson from Berthoud, Colorado

Land Speed Record - Class Racing

Aaron Wilson from Berthoud, Colorado running in 650cc M-PF and others 1650cc MPS-PF with rider Richard Nallin

Jim Higgins from Vacaville, California 1650cc MPS-PG; 1650cc MPS-PF

Jim Higgins from Vacaville, California 350cc Sidecar Class

Look closely at those "froms" and you are going to find folks who share a passion for Buells and speed from SIX COUNTRIES! In 15+ years of Buellin' this is the most internationally diverse group of owners to have ever been assembled. Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Now for the tips......

RESPECT THE SALT

Team Elves has gained a reputation as one of the best organized and friendly teams to ever stir Salt. We practice "Safe Salt" and ask that all members abide by a few simple guidlines:

  • NO DRINKING - there'll be plenty of time for celebration in the evenings.
  • SMOKING - if you smoke, place your butts in a can, cup or something and properly dispose of them.
  • GROUND COVERS - go under all parked vehicles. We leave no oil on the Salt and do everything we can to leave this resource as we found it.

INFORMATION

You will find a TEAM ELVES COMMAND CENTER in a motorhome. There will be someone there at all times who can answer any questions you have from medical needs to "who's on first". In addition, we'll have radio contact with all teams, the start/finish areas and all chase vehicles.

To those of you needing help with entry in 130/150/class racing, you'll find Vickie inside with forms and ready to help you with any entries and class changes.

ELF-CHOW

Most of you have purchased ELF CHOW badges. These entitle you to "vittles". Meals will be served starting Friday and there will be food available at all times for those folks on "race schedules". If you need to purchase a $35 ELF CHOW badge, head to the COMMAND CENTER.

JERSEYS, SHIRTS, CAPS and PATCHES

Will be available for sale in the COMMAND CENTER. NOTE: I am empowered to assess PATCH FINES on the spot for no apparent reason!

PRESS

There will be an unusal Press presence this year. If media folks have questions, you are welcome to refer them to Dave Gess who has TEAM ELVES Press Kits and credentials. Be sure to thank these folks AND be sure to meet Land Speed Loiuse!

SHEER SURVIVAL

If this is your first year, buzz over to "things to bring to the Salt" and increase your knowledge. The more you know, the better it gets. Weather is predicted to be perfect. The reflection of the sun off the salt will burn the underside of your nose. Study the list and benefit from the idiots who preceded you.

MY RACERS
VERY IMPORTANT

Okay, this is where it sounds a bit testy, it's not. Please LEAVE THE RACERS ALONE. This gets intense and represents, for the Class Racers, the culimination of most the weekends and evenings over the last year. They need to concentrate and have a system. If they need help, they will ASK.

The time for questions and discussion is in the evening and after the days events are concluded. The best example I can think of is an operating room. The procedure goes like this...if the Doc needs something, he asks. It upsets the rythym of things if he's getting tapped on the shoulder ever 4 minutes by a nurse asking if he needs something.

Best bet, stand behind the roped off areas and WATCH QUIETLY. You are WELCOME to watch. This is your team and you are going to be proud.

SAFETY

Land Speed Racing is inherently dicey stuff. Since the beginning, we've been guided by safety. Please follow common sense (i.e. - no excursions into the "hot" areas. If you are driving to the finish line remember (yes, I was the offended who got busted for 140 in a Town Car) you are not on the course. The last thing we need is a an accident 2 miles off towards the horizon.

Watch your general health. We'll have tons of water, drink it, stay hydrated and watch for "Salt Burn" from reflected sunlight.

DO I HIT A DRIVER OF A 3 WOOD?

Okay, it starts to get fun here. One thing that the BLM and local have no problem with is littering the Salt with ORANGE GOLF BALLS. We will be conduting periodic longest drive towards the horizon and closest to the pin contests. After a prior ugly incident I will no longer ride the scooter to and fro' like an arcade monkey while Woz shoots at me.

THE PARTY

On Saturday night, all those who have invaded our fair land are throwing a party so that we may gain a flavor for the varied cultures represented. Rocket will again serve as the "moral compass" for the evening and Pammy the chaperon. HINT: just call everyone "Mate", say "Cheers" alot and replace "damn" with Bloody and you'll pretty much blend.

THE BOTTOM LINE

We are a group of friends who have grown close through our common passion. Borders have given way and, together, we've grown closer and expanded our indivual worlds. Most of all, have fun, be safe and enjoy. This is the team you have made, I hope you'll join me in beaming with pride during the entire event.

Thanks for making YOUR TEAM GREAT and I'm looking forward to seeing all of you!

I've done an FL1A search, and I can't find any previous discussion on the subject. I'm seriously considering using that style filter, so if there are disadvantages I'd sure like to hear of them. Evidently the threads and mounting surface are compatible, so the only other thing that I know of that could cause problems is the existance of a pressure valve in the filter and at what pressure it opens. If anybody has some wisdom on the subject, please post to the Knowledge Vault, Lubrication section. I'd appreciate it.

Court, I got one from you.

Josh got one from me.

Whoever has the virus, it's going through their Outlook address book and picking names for both sending it to and who to show as the sender.

I checked my system, it's not me. I don't even use Outlook anyway.

It's someone who has my yahoo address in their book.

well the header on the one I received said:

So if anyone out there (I'm betting from who received it it's an Elf or BadWeb member) recognizes any of part of the header, hit here for a cure.

Those from the EMPIRE of Texas are known as "Texicans" and it's BETTER than a country. That list is the competitors, not the attendees.

For those who remember my intermittent no spark problem, the culprit turned out to be a bad cam position sensor and a bad connection within my ignition relay (covered under warrenty). The mechanic had to ride it home (with a pickup following - what a luxory) to get it to break down on him, which it did (3x). I've never had a mechanic take home my vehicle in an effort to diagnose a problem - my hat's off to Mike at GGHD.

Good luck on the Salt!

I just bought an 99 S3 and believe it is totally stock. I have looked the bike over and not found anything aftermarket including pipe, air filter, computer.
Here is my problem, I have a dead cyc. We pulled the tank, checked the injectors and replaced the rear jugs injector and fixed a broke wire. She ran great after that for about 2 hrs. Next morning didnt want to start have the same dead cyclender. Checked injetor and brake line and both were good.
Any suggestions?
Any thing else I should look out for with this yr?
Thanx`

Bronzed,
You checked the "brake line"?? I'm guessing that you are smarter than I and are fluent in multiple languages, but maybe not 100% totally fluent in English? Couldn't see from your user profile any information except your name.

Did you check to see if the dead cylinder is getting spark? Check for intake seal leaks?

R-T...not neccessarilly. Texas is the only state in the Union that can legally ceceed from the USA without congressional approval. Texas also has the right to it's own Navy. There are a few other quirks about the Texas constitution that I can't remember right now but in general calling Texas a country inside another country isn't that far from the truth...at least legally speaking

I once read a SF story in which the hero so talked up Texas that his commander thought that Texas was a planet! Texans sure are proud of the history of their state, and I admire that. They used to teach a manditory State History class in California public schools, but that was many years ago. The state is much to liberal for that now, I guess. I don't miss my home state a bit. Well, I do miss the Sierras.

Dueller: Thanks, I'll give that a go. Good info from Blake in the KV-Lubrication section - worth reading.

O2 Sensor Help Wanted

Does anyone have an O2 sensor that is shorter than the Buell factory or Bosch unit?

Trying to mount Bubs on an X1 and the O2 sensor is positioned on the rear header so that it hits the battery.

A shorter but compatible unit would work.

Any ideas?
