ELF-LY SPEAKING. . . .

HOTEL ROOMS:

Well, ya'll went and did it. We "overflowed" the 33 rooms in our block at the Staleline Hotel.

For anyone who could not get rooms at the Stateline and wants to stay there with the Team, rooms are still available. Please contact Shannon Reed, Convention Sales Manager, directly at 801-776-0203 or on her mobile at 801-870-1491. She also has a toll free number at 1-888-217-3727.

I've found it easiest to contact her on her mobile phone. Just tell her that you are with Team Elves.

Sometimes It Does Take A Scientist

(true story)

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity.
The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains.
Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's backrest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow.
The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists for suggestions.

You're going to love this:

NASA responded with a one-line memo:
"Defrost the chicken."

Hooray! Fineally got the computer back after a major meltdown and I am back intouch with the rest of the world.

Peter in reply to your post of August 25.

The thermal barrier coating applied to the piston dome prevents excess combustion heat from soaking into the piston preventing it from expanding thermally as it normally would thus maintaining a more consistant piston size. this allows tighter piston to wall clearance to be run resulting in better ring seal and less piston rock. Typically we run to the low side of piston manufacturers recomendations a even tighter if when the skirts are coated with CermaLube, a ceramic based dry film lubricant. I believe you said that you were running an intercooler so efficiency matter. When I said efficiency I meant horse power and torque. One of our customer specializes in racing Buick Grand Nationals with turborched v6 engines. This year in addition to the full engine coatings of the past we coated the intercoolers & inlet piping with thermal emitting & barrier coatings resulting in gains of torque & horsepower with improved throttle responce.

As far as the down sides of coating I really cant think of any. I the late sixties & early seventies adheasion of the coatings could sometimes be a problem, however those problems have been eleminated with different chemical compositions geared to the internal combustion engine. Performance of the coatings depends on proper preperation of parts, proper application and curing and perhaps most important selection of the correct coating for the job at hand.

Saw pictures of your bike on the Badweb Buells site--TITS--a work of art in progress, keep up the good work and keep the pictures coming.

Ara in reply to your post of August 25.

All the benefits of coated internal engine components ia a racing engine are also enjoyed by a hi performance or everyday street engine. If parts needed to be recoated in the once or twice fresheening up of a racing engine this would be acceptable, however it would not be in a everyday driver or a street performance engine where durability & longevity is of prime importance. Earlier this year a customer brought back a small block Chevy street performance engine for some upgrades. We built the engine and coated pistons, combustion chambers, valves & valve springs four years ago. Upon disassembly of the engine the coated components while showing signs of use were perfectly intact. The big 3 auto companies are using ceramic based dry film lubricating coatings on the very short skirts of pistons in new engines. Chrysler had a problem with piston noise in the Jeep Liberty engine until coated piston skirts solved the problem. Harley-Davidson coats the skirts of their pistons. Valve springs, the hardest working part of an engine, on our circle track engines needed to be replaced several times per season due to loss of tension from heat & and constant hi rpm's. After coating the springs with a friction reducing & heat emitting coating the springs last the entire season with no appreciable loss of tension. This translated into a savings of time, money and the avoidance of a possible catastrophic engine failure. Any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Been studying the Buell from Japan and its inlet system for some time now. DAMN I'm proud to be an American. The BUELL MOTORCYCLE COMPANY makes the best looking bread box air cleaners in Wisconson in the good old USA. We should all go out to the garage and find that dusty box where we put the bread box that we removed from our Buell, take the bread box in the house, clean it up and hang it on the wall to display it like the work of art that it is! I'm so proud that a bread box will now fly below my AMERICAN flag. Japan doesn't know squat about building a proper air filter housing.

Yeah, Flap, GM is using coated pistons in most of their motors now too. They are such chiselers though, that for many years they only installed two coated skirt pistons in their 6 cyl engines (cyls 5 and 6 - the two hottest). They had a little goof in the engine plant in Mexico last year - they were installing the two coated pistons in cyls 1 and 2 in the 3.1/3.4L engines. You should hear the piston slap in these things when they are cold. Sounds like a Farm-All haybaler for the first 30 seconds. After replacing thousands of pistons last year for pissed off customers they decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and coat all six. 03's are nice and quiet. The coatings work.

skulley;

did you experience problems running a 180 rear? were you running the 5" cast rim, the 5.5" Buell/PM spun alum rim, or something totally different?

for anybody else;

the "tire shootout" in the June 2002 SPORT RIDER advises that a 180 is the largest tire that should be mounted on a 5.5" rim. is anyone running 190 rears on a X1? on what rim? what happened? good? bad? happy? tragic?

I was going to get my 2.3 Saab pistons coated but have used Cosworth pistons instead and they are good for lots of boost, 2bar+. It was going to cost me £125 for the 4 pistons.

This is the link to the company for your info

I was making some stickers that people on the board had requested from me, since I make vinyl graphics as a side business. I wouldn't say it was an official logo since I don't think anyone ever made that decision. A moderator said something about setting up an order page for stickers and helmet visors with a percentage of sale going to support the board. I was all for it, but it died at that. The last time I posted a classified for a Buell stripe package I was selling I got ripped a new one by a moderator, so I've been off the boards for a while. I guess I was just a little irked. My fault I guess for listing a "commercial" post on the classified section. Personally the only thing I believe it was hurting was the 30% cut for BadWeb that the other moderator and I had previously agreed on. No hard feelings though. If this post isn't removed you can reach me at sweetdaddydelicious@hotmail.com

Regarding those HOA rules and regs: What I did out of frustration was to join the Board - gives you a bit of understanding for the rules but more importantly gives you a real education on what is and is not legal. Soooo, once you get in the system you can bend and use it to your advantage. After a one year term I now know that they can't do a thing about my multiple pets or motorcycles or rust and no matter how ugly I am they can't ask me to leave (you'd be safe here, Court).

Regarding the EBay advertised "1999 X1... it also has factory race kit which prduces 129 HP."

Below the description, you'll find:

"On Aug-30-02 at 06:56:32 PDT, seller added the following information:
the HP ratings are est from dealer with these extras at the crahk shaft"

129 at the crank? Could be. I don't have a clue what modified Buells put out at the crank. I thought, as a general rule, apx 15% is lost through the drive. So 129 would seem kinda high to me. Hmmm... maybe a subject for a dyno topic? Probably best forgotten, as most everyone measures at the rear wheel.

Hey all. Just put a Vance&Hines pipe on my '99 X1. I'm just wondering if I should have gone with the updated front clamp. I really don't see how the old front clamps break so often as I'm hearing. Also I have not yet invested in an aftermarket air filter (maybe an Xmas gift) and I don't have as much power as I did with the stock pipe. Only ran it about 5 miles so far. Could it be 1) an exhaust leak? 2) an aftermarket air filter? 3) update the fuel injector specs or a combination of all three? Thanks for any info anyone can give. I've only had the bike about a month. It has about 940 mile on it.

Yes, get the new mount. It's a free install at the dealer. If you have put on an aftermarket exhaust, you need the race ECM. You're most likely running a bit lean right now.

YOu definately need the new front mount with a V&H as they are highly prone to breaking w/o one. The new supertrapp works good with either set-up IMO as it has a full wraparound mount now.

Also, I agree, get the Race ECM as mentioned above.

Fogcity: why is that they can not do anything about the pets? If my girlfriend ever moves in with me, I'd hate to tell her that she has to give up her cats, since I already have 2, and the HOA has a 2 cat limit in the deed restrictions. Even tho I touched on this earlier and they unofficially slackened up, they still have it written in.
