By Rob Geiger, NHRA.com 08/03/2005 Team co-owner George Bryce reports that his G-Squared transporter has been found abandoned on the side of the road in Omaha, Neb. The truck appears to have hit several tree branches and looks as though it had been driven down a dirt road. The entire contents have been stolen and a $10,000 reward has been posted for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators. "The idiots that stole our truck must have been smart enough to know it would be impossible to get very far on the highway with that truck," Bryce said. "Chip [Ellis] had been scrambling all over town looking for places where someone could hide a rig when we got a call that it was seen sitting on the side of the road. The police and Chip made a beeline for the location and found the truck. "You couldn't have picked a worse time for this to happen. We were loaded up for the road trip, plus we had picked up a bunch of new chassis' on the way. Everything is gone. "This whole deal seems preconceived to me. It's like Chip was stalked, like someone knew what was inside. That rig is our home away from home and we feel completely violated." Among the items missing at this point are six complete motorcycles, the team's race bike, a show bike, three S&S Cycle motors, three pit bikes, two spare chassis, Ellis' leathers and helmet, and all of the tools and equipment the group takes on the road. "We're offering a $10,000 reward for any information that might help us catch these punks and put them in jail," Bryce said. "I don't know where they'd be able to sell this stuff because it's all custom made and numbered. "Thankfully, no one was hurt. This is a big blow to our program but everything can be replaced over time. Chip's okay, and that's the most important thing." Ellis parked the rig last night around 10:30 p.m. at an Omaha hotel. When he came out this morning the truck and trailer were gone. what confuses me is that the stuff in the truck (minus the individual tools and stuff) MUST be easily recognizable to anyone that would seriously be in the market for such gear -- kinda like selling a world reknown piece of art, yes? It's been a rough week for S&S and G2. Last Sunday S&S's first employee Floyd Baker pasted away. He had been with the company for over 35 years and for the last few years had been working in product development. He was a master machinist beyond definition. He probably made the first prototype of every part S&S has released in the last 35 years. I can't even explain the loss that we are going through right now. He did more to mentor the young engineers and designers than any school ever could. Just to top it off, a trailer full of engine parts that he worked on and probably had a part in is gone. I remember him laughing the first time he made the butterflies for the pro stock throttle body. They are freaking huge! God speed Floyd. | ||

Thanks Ferris. This is just one of those weeks that we just have to get through. Some other good Floyd stories are him going 150+ at Bonneville in the late 70's on a Shovelhead lowrider on alcohol. A group of guys are restoring that bike right now. You should see the size of the fuel fitting welded into the bottom of the tank. He also recently gave all of us engineers and our facy vibration equipment a lesson. We were trying to see if an engine in a bike was properly balanced using accelerometers and data acq stuff. He came and said that all you have to do is watch the front axle when you rev the bike up. It should vibrate in a circle. If it goes up and down or side to side it is wrong.....how simple. He was right too. I guess just remember that before there were biker buildoff's and TV shows, there were people like Floyd designing, testing and improving the basic parts that started the Vtwin industry.  | ||

Z0010.CB isolator kit that I just received from DaveS in Appleton. When I opened the box there were no instructions but I can get the service bulletin off bad web, no big deal. But in the hardware package I see the replacement bolts but no lock washers for the big bolts. Is this correct? Or do you reuse the old lock washers? Thanks for any help guys. | ||

Dustykat, Do you mean the big (T-60) Torx bolts that attach the isolators to the swingarm block? If so, those are just flatwashers and are OK to reuse. The new Torx bolts come pre-coated with blue Locktite so no lockwashers are necessary. (I just did mine yesterday.) | ||

The kit does include a new lockwasher for bolt for the rear tie bar from the frame to the swingarm block, but that's the only one I recall seeing or needing. I finished reinstalling everything last night, but I still need to mount two Michelin Pilot Roads and service the steering stem bearings before I ride. Seems like there aren't enough hours in a day lately... | ||

Where are the XB and Blast engines made? (I suspect the HD engine factory.) Have they always been made there? Perhaps just a sticking point with me... But I consider these engines Buell engines not H-D engines like (seemingly all) magazine label the XB engines. "Much more rough and ready is the Buell XB-12S Lightning. Its Harley- Davidson, air-cooled 1203cc V-twin" Hell...did they not first appear in Buells then migrate to the Sportster line? I've always called my '99 tuber engine a H-D engine on steroids and my '95 S2 a "sportster" engine. I suppose Sportster owners wouldn't mind claiming they have a detuned XB Buell engine.... The engines are made at Capitol Drive Powertain Operations facility. Some of you remember it as the old A. O Smith Propeller factory. Beginning about 2004 the more accuarate statement is "the HD Sportster uses a Buell derived engine". Like racing technology works it's way to the consumer, the things the Buell Elves have done have improved the Sportster. In "old days", the engine wasn't built it was "bought" and steps were made to ensure that could be validated. Erik wasn't in a position to undertake the pricey testing associated with getting an engine approved for sale. The answer was to use the "already approved" Sportster engine. The intake was modfied (useing a Screamin' Eagle filter) and the exhaust was a Supertrap. Court | ||

On the same assembly line with Sportster engines, one right after the other, about 5 XL's to every XB/Blast engine produced. Like Court mentioned, previous to 2004 the Buell engines could be considered tweaked/tuned XL engines modified to fit the Buell frames. After 2004 XL engines could be considered detuned XB engines in different cases to fit the new XL frame. A must see plant tour if you are in the Milwaukee area. Check HD's website for tour info and some pictures. | ||

Each bike down the line has little to do with the prior. The idea is that each Elf must look at the build sheet, **THINK** and build that bike. . . no one falls into "ruts" or forms habits. My favorite "Courtism". . . "Buell puts Elves on the line for the same reason NASA puts Astronauts in the shuttle" It's a really good engine which is further from it's grave than the pundits opine.
