I went and put eyes on this bike tonight, it's 15 minutes from my house. It's legit. Fuel weep, tank needs sealed, but it's all there and appears to all be correct according to a driveway inspection. Good shape overall. If anyone's interested and wants a local badwebber involved, I'm happy to help out - store it after purchase, help facilitate the buy, whatever. Seller wants to make sure it goes to a good home. I'd snag it if I had money, but with the accident, medical deductibles, time off/lost income...I can't swing it right now. |

Were dual front disks standard back then? Please excuse my ignorance as I don't know a damn thing about the older models. |

I'll have to defer to Court but I believe they were. This bike has dual 4 piston front PM calipers; I don't believe Erik had started with the 6 piston units / single rotors yet. Maybe I should dust off my "reader" copy of "25 years" and refresh my addled memory... |

Ratbuell, Did you get to look over sellers s3t's? I am interested in the set. Never herd of the Defender s3t? Is #5 as nice as she looks? |

#5 is a very nice original. Original paint, original finishes, unrestored and complete. I went to look at the Defender. I have one already (project) and if I do anything it'd be that one. It was also a nice original. His blue S3T was not on-site, it's at a friend's place. Said it's a 5k mile original, and if any of his other stuff was an indication (XLCR #95; original Nortons, old-school Ducatis, you name it), it's also going to be a very nice, very original, very un-restored and un-monkeyed-with motorcycle. |

1989 featured the Marzocchi front suspension, dual 310mm discs with the 4 piston calipers. In 1991 some interesting things happened . . . The Marzocchi suspension yielded to the White Power ROMA 4054 inverted forks (if you want we can start the "who was first to use inverted forks discussion again) and the dual discs were scraped for the single 320mm rotor (remind me to tell you why it was on the right) gripped by the first (no discussion here) 6 piston caliper used on a motorcycle. 1991 was also the year that the 4 speed was dropped in favor of a 5 speed. . . . which is one of the better Buell stories that proved we were smart to have "spies" planted in the Harley-Davidson engineering department. I'm not sure, to this day, if the identity of the person who leaked the drawings is known. But, few at HD would have minded Erik Buell being blindsided. Touche' The color shown is Curaco Blue and I'm betting the bodywork may have been the product of the Tomahawk Kit Car Company. They did really work and, at one time, Buell was rejecting better than 50% of what was supplied. The good news is that Buell was rejecting it and the bodywork that went on bikes was top quality. It's a fine example from about the time of the first or second Buell Homecoming and the year that Phil Wolfe (White RS1200), Dr. Don Chase (Red RS1200) and I (Red 1990 and Black/Gold 1991) incorporated and claimed the name Buell Owners Group. I still have the roster. We celebrated the day that we had to go to the 2nd page to list the names of the world's Buell owners. This bike is a wonderful example from the "3 on the left, 2 on the right" days . . . . Froggy and I wandered up some RS parts manuals, service manuals and owners manuals last week when he came a shopping in the barn . . . . Froggy is the proud new owner of one of the rarest Buell shirts ever made. Fun times . . . |

Very cool, I'm glad they're going to a good home. I didn't mention it to him yesterday - I'm still sorry I couldn't pop for the bike myself - but he has Defender #1. Mine...is #2. You'll notice the decal arrangement on his (yours, now) is a bit different than the rest of the Defenders, courtesy of being the first one. But, it's chock full of original parts, including the windshield with the rectangle cut out of it for the front strobe-light's pedestal base. It's not restored; it's not spit-n-polished...but other than an aftermarket shifter, chrome hamcan air filter, some fasteners here and there, and 1" bar risers, it's pretty much dead-on original. I'm happy to help fill you in on what a Defender is (there's also a good mention of them in the 25 Years book), and I'm sure 1313 can chime in as well. Congrats! I'm sure I'll get a call tomorrow to see how I can help out here on this end. Happy to lend a hand, since these are going to a good home and not getting "chopped"!! |
