I picked up this bike right before I bought my Buell. The more I rode and wrenched on my Buell, the more I liked it and lost interest in the Kawasaki. And as I've made my M2 more comfortable for longer trips, it's made me want another one to be the "hot rod". I know that finding a trade is a long shot, but it's worth a shot as it'll save me the hassle of selling one bike and trying to buy another. Here is the bike as I bought it.
It's a 1977 KZ1000 LTD. The previous owner bought it with a blown motor and put in a rebuilt 900 out of an earlier bike. On the bike when bought: Rebuilt KZ 900 motor Larger KZ tank (non-ltd) 34mm C/V carbs off a later police bike K&N pod filters New Kerker 4-1 pipe New progressive rear shocks What I did: Changed fork legs and seals Converted fork stem bearing to tapered roller Installed stainless engine bolt kit to get rid of the silly JIS (phillip head) screws Added case savers (engine guard) Superbike bar to replace the uncomfortable clubmans New front master cylinder Accell coils Fixed shady wiring and put blade style fuse box in place of cartridge fuses Added turn signals New swingarm bearings AGM Battery Coated inside of tank with Red Kote Pingle petcock adapter w/ knockoff pingle petcock Tank and tail have been painted Candy Apple red. It's spray paint, translucent red over a metallic gold. I'm going to do some more wet sanding and clear it this weekend. I have some 2 part clear in spray cans (from Eastwood), I'll include them with the bike, but I don't feel comfortable using them in my garage. I also have some used parts that I have acquired, tank emblems, electronic ignition, and some finned clutch/stator covers with peeling chrome. I also have the original engine (in pieces), carbs, and tank. I need to finish the tank as well as wire in the Accell coils to get it running again. The only other thing it need (that I know of) is a rebuild on the rear master cylinder. It works, but the bubbling paint tells me it's leaking. I know it's not pristine, but these bikes seem very comparable to tube frame Buells in value. I'm open to a project bike, but need to be fairly complete. Buell parts will nickel and dime you to death. I will include cash depending on the trade. I really want an S1, but will consider another M2 that I can convert, or an X1. |

The old kz types are cool looking bikes! Much luck with the sale. |

Thanks. Starting to work on it again has renewed my interest somewhat. Might be that when I get it up and running it'll fulfill my need for a loud dirty hotrod. I ended up using the 2k clear and it came out shiny! Needs wetsanding, but looks great for a rattlecan paint job, and now I know it won't melt if I spill gas on it.

That's some nice work! I know what you mean with working on it and having fun doing that. Have a gt 550 myself ,It's bobbed and chopped a bit and there are times that i do completely nothing with it. But when i do work or change a thing on it and get some inspiration back it's fun. |
