Reason I'm doing this...it's not registerable for street use in CA  So maybe I can find one to ride here...would prefer another Lightning (CG or SL) ideally 2003 or newer, but will consider other offers...can't hurt to try! OBTW...bike not being registerable in CA is not the fault of the bike, but the fault of the state. It was under 7500 miles when I went to get it registered, and because of that, in CA it is considered a new vehicle. So they demand that the emission sticker on any new vehicles specifically mention CA (where the federal standard is good for every other state as far as I know). Since the emission sticker only says that it meets all federal EPA standards, so they refused to register it. If it had been over 7500 miles when I took it, it would've been exempt from that rule and would've gotten registered lickety split...go figure. | ||

If it already has 7xxx miles on it, maybe you could take it to the track, or somewhere and get the odo over 7500 miles. Or register it out of state until you get the mileage up. I never heard that rule before, sux. good luck, | ||

Ya...I thought about that...but I was told that even when it gets 7500 miles on it later, they will not register it since I brought it in before it had 7500 miles, and now they "know about it," and it's in their records. Pretty weird if you ask me...I guess it would be ok as a track bike in-state. | ||

Do you have family out of state??? Sell it to them for a buck and ride it. Buy it back when it has the mileage it needs. Then buy it back. You will have the documents that you sold it and bought it back. | ||

Thanks Bads, that's an idea too. The rules aren't very clear but from what I understand, I believe I'd have to show proof of registration out-of-state. I have thought about selling it to family/friends out-of-state and getting them to register it, and trying that way and seeing what they'll say here. Only thing, registering out-of-state requires an inspection by the DMV over there, meaning the bike would have to be shipped there and then back. So I think that would be an option, but quite painful & probably quite expensive with shipping there and back ("there" is pretty far)...and not sure what would happen afterwards. It is something to think about, but I think it may be my very last resort. I'm really getting the screws put to me here! | ||

Why not just tell the DMV that it have over 7500 miles on it? I think it's highly doubtful that someone will actually look at the odometer. Also is the mileage stored in the instrument cluster? If so then you can just put another one on your bike from a higher mileage bike and be done with it. Then put your original one back on after you get it registered. I'm sure you can find one cheap on EGay. | ||

once you try to reg a bike with less than 7500 miles in CA, it is "blackballed" in the system. forever!!! if you don't attempt to reg until the mileage is over 7500 and nobody else has attempted to reg it in CA, you are good to go. even if you buy a new bike out of state and ride it 7500 miles before bringing it to CA, no go, if it hasn't been reg out of state before!!! ferris knows all about this, first hand. even though he snuck his in, due to his vigilant record keeping, and the fact that a number of reps from DMV informed him it would be ok. when he first took it in they said "no". he had to jump through some hoops and they finally agreed to reg it. | ||

Tenn has no inspection for motorcycles either. Totally sucks to be in your positional. Be careful with handling this, there are legal ramifications to registering a vehicle in your or others name. | ||

offer to trade someone on here your low mileage speedo for their 7500+ speedo cluster. Just a thought, but if you already alerted the DMV by bringing in paperwork you may have botched the deal, as far as getting your bike registered in CA goes. | ||

WTF??? you bring a low milage used bike CA? wow there are a whole lot of Blasts that are 8 years old that can't be regestered in CA |
