Yeah that chrome lever is pretty easy to break. You might spring for one of the aftermarket ones American Sport Bike has as they tend to go on and off easier. |

Ben, I am pretty sure I have two in the garage. You are talking about the original stock chromed lever that mounts on the splined shaft sticking out of the primary cover, right? Email me a shipping address (my email address is in my profile) and I will fire it out to you tomorrow. You do need the new chain glide (primary chain tensioner). The stock one is way too weak, and will split along the backplate (if it has not already). I think it just threads out the top into the primary cover as one piece (bolt and all). Don't remember if I had to pull the primary chain to do it or not, but I remember it being an easy job (provided you have impact tools or a big breaker bar). While you are in "check everything" mode and have stuff apart, if you have more then 10k miles on the bike you might want to drop the oil pump and peak up at the drive gear up under your cam cover. It is an easy check, wear is obvious. It is probably fine, but if it's not it is an expensive failure mode. |

Not to argue with Reepicheep but it threads into the bottom of the primary cover not the top. You loosen the nut and use an allen wrench underneath to turn it out. Do your sanity a favor and pick up 4 threaded rods (14/20 X 6-8" long) Thread them in around the open primary, slip your gasket on them. Then you can rest the new cover on them while you lift the primary chain over the tensioner when you reinstall the cover. The shifter arm is the same as a Sportster shifter. You should be able to get one for the cost of shipping. They're a dime a dozen. JT edited by jst on July 17, 2003 edited by jst on July 17, 2003 |

No argument from me, I could not remember and was just guessing... I think we are saying the same thing anyway... which nut do mean to loosen? The lock nut on the bolt sticking out to the outside bottom of the primary cover? Remove that one, stick an allen wrench in the bottom of the protruding bolt you just pulled the nut off of, and turn it (tighten so to speak) so it eventually threads its way completely in, up, and out of the primary cover? Take my answers with a grain of salt... until Ben emailed me a picture of the thing, I even forgot the primary shoe is in the primary cover, and not in the engine case... |
