You should drain the float bowl at least once every two months. High RPM decel afterfiring (through the exhaust) is quite normal on carbureted vehicles without air cut valves, such as the blast. This happens because the A/F mix gets really lean when you close the throttle plate, but it's still sucking a lot of air because of the high RMP. This is where fuel injection adds to longevity, because it senses the lean condition and richens up the mixture slightly to keep the motor cool. Anyway, #1 I would clean out that float bowl and maybe even clean out the jets and see that the float level is correct and the valve is operational. #2 Try moving the clip one slot down on the needle, see if that does anything for you. #3 I would suspect ignition or electrical. A bad battery can cause these things, so I would check it for sure. Spark plugs, coil, plug wire, ECM, voltage regulator, and alternator would be the next suspects. Good luck! --Nik |

I wish I had a problem like you! I still have to pay probably another $2K for my blast and then build the thing and then tune it from scratch with a different carb! It'll be great fun, but I sure wish I could at least ride it! |

Thanks - I'm leaning towards ignition, however, its always good to try the easy stuff first and thats about everything you listed - did most of them already, will try the few carb tricks/cleaning - thats the reason I bought the red - to have something to ride while I tinker with the Black - knock on wood - the Black has remained solid since the rebuild and has been a very fun ride! A pale shadow of the grins that await you - what carb you going with? GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

EZ I was having this problem on my bike for several weeks. I advanced the timing just a touch and the problem went away. I would get the backfire, the bike would loose power, I would back off the throttle and the bike would start going again. Might help...Have a great day |

My guess is the ignition module. The lean issue makes sense. I dont know why Mmelvis' problem went away with timing advance.Very interesting! |

Well its getting to that time of year again! Who would be interested in a group ride for all Northern California and beyound riders to meet the Southern California and beyond Blast riders? The time April 2, 3, and 4 - though it can be just the 2nd and 3rd for those pressed by time! Yes the anual San Louis Obispo - SLO Ride is on again and I hope to meet a lot of the western USA Blast riders this year! How about it folks - a chance to finally put a face to the names/nonplumes of folks you've been conversing with is yours and the rides are fun! Speak up if your interested so I can get rooms and rides arranged. Last year was great fun and a great group of rides - to there, around there, and back again! - 3 unique routes, and new additions planed for this year! Well Blastards - how about it - ready to ride? Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ |

The sensor my be unplugged or it could be bad. I can't remember how it was wired since it was a year ago when I last took mine apart. I don't have my manual with me, but it's probably in there under troubleshooting, or at least in electrical you could see if it could be unplugged and still lighting. Do a visual inspection of whatever is easy to get at first! Make sure all the connectors are tight. Before you buy a new one, please take it out and look at it. If metal particles are stuck to it, it could be setting it off also.I believe the sensor is the one on top of the crankcase just in front of the starter, with one hex cap screw holding it on. (eliptical black plastic thing with 2 wires coming from it) You may be able to replace it without taking much more off than the airbox. Again, I'm not sure if this is all true, just what I can remember. --Nik |

That bike has been out for a couple years. I've heard a story about when someone was driving one down a street, and had a car stop beside him...the exhaust melted the car's bumper |

Ok..is this a blast frame? anyone know where to get this tail piece and lower fairing |

Yes its the Blast frame - using a clubman cafe rear/seat - probably adapted from their cafe plastic that they carry for sportsters - as for the lower fairing - there are universals out there that allow you to drill and cut to mount as you see fit at an inexpensive price - I'm sure Crossroads could tell you who - if they don't sell one themselves - lol - with an aftermarket M2 wheel adjuster welded onto the swingarm's extended arm ends. I'd say it is about 1/2 of a blast frame. It has been chopped up pretty good and those straight tubular supports running from behind the pulley guard up to the seat are completely custom. I've actually wondered if by removing so much of the thickest components of the frame, that they actually weakened the frame too much. There sure isn't much left of it. |

Yup, that's right. And if you think that doing a flush mount on the taillight and signals makes the rear end look minimized, wait until you see what we've done to mine. *evil laugh*

Anyone have any suggestions on improving the mountain performance of the Blast? My intention is to take mine across the Rockies next August. Right now its stock but rejetting and a new pipe are in the near future. |

Re jetting for the altitude will help, other than that, more power! Its still gonna be a dog at the high altitudes but unless you are heavy it shouldnt be a problem. |

Thanks Erik. I think maybe the Rockies will be off limits for a little while then. I just want to ride across to Denver to show the bike to friends and family. They'll just have to come here so I can show it off I think, unless I trailer it. I'm pretty heavy (250) |

You could probably take the air screw in half a turn to lean things up a bit when you get to around 5000 feet and more - then just remember to turn it half a turn back out when you start traveling below that - simple enough - and should ease up on that power loss a bit - you do want to remember to turn it back. - I always like to mention NHRS though as a good guide mark in one's quest for power - lol GT - JBOTDS! Jeb, Just go for it, I went through Colorado on a stock Blast in August of '02 and didn't have any problems. The bike tends to bog a little at altitude, but I didn't get run over. The route I took trough Colorado was the 76W to the 70W. I weigh about 180 and had about 50 lbs of gear on the bike. |

Well, the semis do it and they'll be going much slower than me I'm pretty sure. If I stick to I-70 and C-470 then I should be good. That idle adjustment would probably be good overall for while I'm there. Thanks all for the advice Hopefully I'll be down to around 220 by the time I go. The bike will be about 1 year old then and even though I have a year from August to trade on a big twin and get my full cost back I don't think I'm going to be able to do it. I'm a little attached to the Blast now and the big harleys cost so much! |
