Hey guys! I know this isnt an original topic by any means but ive done a lot of reading about peoples builds but still have some unanswered questions. I had a problem a little after i got my blast, turns out the crank output shaft completely stripped. Instead of tearing it down, sending it to a machine shop to make sure a new crank is true and everything was good, waiting for the turn around time ect. and then rebuilding everything, i just opted to buy a motor (with less miles) and swap them. Now im trying to plan out a build for my second motor that i can build and then just swap it out again. Obviously theres the big bore kits out there, but im more interested in knowing what cams, springs, lifters, and all the odds and ends. This will be my first motorcycle engine build (i have built several car motors before-so im not a total noob) Ill be using the bike on the street - i ride pretty aggressively so i definitely wouldnt mind a “race” built motor. Im looking for info on what parts (w/part numbers or from what bike) would be the best options. Im thinking of going with the 600 kit seeing as how ill have to send it out anyway, but am having a tough time figuring out what cams and such would work the best. ive seen that adjustable lifters are a go to for most builds. are any brands parts better than others? should i stay away from certain brands? i want to hear what you guys have done for your builds, why you do (and or dont) like the parts you used, and what couldve been or was a better option to go with. If you could have done something differently to your motor from the start, what would you have done differently? im asking mostly because i want to try to get the build done in 1 go and hopefully not need to redo or change anything later - although, as we all know... we always do Like always, I appreciate all the knowledge you guys have and look forward to hearing your opinions! -Anthony (trying to get to the dark side) |

Yes, boring to fit the 600 kit is minimum. XB top end is the way to go and they come in the 600 kit. Stock XB cams (or equivalent XL ‘04 cams or B70s) and stock head will get you to 7500 rpms nicely. That will leave you with a nice reliable street engine. If you go beyond the stock XB head (Which is sold as “stage 2 light by some), stick with beehive valves springs. A finely tuned CV carb and this engine will delight you and be a joy to ride without issues. It is an amazing transformation. Jim’s lifters or Zippers for collapsible pushrod tubes. New electronic ignition with 7500 or 8000 rpm rev limit. That’s for a reliable street engine. Beyond that you’ll have to do more research. But as you know, the power band will shrink and reliability will go down. Fuel injection is possible. Someone might want to talk you into heavy duty (non beehive) springs and heavier valves. Which is not necessary and compromises reliability. But it’s up to what you want. The 500 with an XB top end and cams is a screamer!! 600 just more so. Again, I’m conservative and don’t like to be stranded! (The XB top end gets better mpg too!!) Good luck and enjoy! |

probably a dumb question, but is there a difference between cams? i found a b70 secondary on ebay here https://www.ebay.com/itm/CamShaft-PN-B70-E09-02-SE CONDARY-TLZZJ-Cam-Shaft-Head-Engine-Motor/23271271 7651 would this work? its missing the cam gear though and thats odd to me, from what ive seen, i thought the cams and gears were a solid piece. if this is normal is that something i can buy separately or reuse from the cam in the motor already? |

That’s not a Blast cam. There are minor differences in the B70 cams and the XB cams. They’re both very close. |

http://store.wpsracing.com/b70grcamsefi.html Though I’d rather have XB cams and it’s likely you can find a set with an XB top end. Or the Screaming Eagle XL ‘04 cams |

Thank you gearhed! You think the stock xb cams are better though? You also said the xb jug and piston are better? Better than just buying the 600 kit? Would i basically just want to take all the xb parts (including rocker arms, rollers ect) and swap them onto the blast case? |

The SE XL cams are the same grind as the XB cams, but are less work bolting them in. Yes, XB jug, XB9 piston and XB head. So you’d order the XB9 600 kit (high compression is probably standard). The XB jug and head have wider (more) cooling fins. |

If I remember correctly the XB/XL cams have a more gentle ramp than the B70’s. That’s why the B70’s are my last choice. Otherwise I would have probably used B70 cams. But feel free to pull the specs up on them all and compare. |
