This is in addition to the "Basket case P3" and the "Altitude jetting" threads. I thought I'd separate them for "focus on topic" reasons. Hearing this awful slapping sound from the left side of the engine, and noticing a surge/slip when starting out in 1st gear, I decided to open it up and take a look. Step one was to check the chain adjustment. Following the manual didn't do much. In fact, when finger tightening the adjustment screw, it felt like it actually started to touch the chain, so I backed it out so it wouldn't touch. Step two was to get in there to take a look. Went to drain the oil and whalla, nothing came out! Pulled the cover off and it was like I thought. . . the "chain adjuster shoe" was only 1/2 there and hanging the wrong way. The "top chain guard" was about 75% there. While everything was "wet", it was a mess of mangled parts and plastic. Luckily, it appeared to only be fragments of chain shoe, and guard. Oh yea, and the shoe spring is missing an end. Went to order parts from my local HD shop and apparently they are not available from them, so I ordered from another shop. The guy said that in a year, no more Buell parts! Here's my questions: When I reinstall the spring and shoe, can I assume that the spring is there to keep tension on the shoe/chain? Basically keep it up towards the chain? Also, I was going to put Mobile1 5w-20 in there. Will that suffice or will it mess with the clutch poorly? Thanks in advance, HJ |

I figured it out. Yes the adjuster shoe has tension to the chain offered by the spring. . . . which requires some determination to install. Secondly, I dumped a qt of Mobile1 20w-50 in there instead. I think the thicker consistency will give it more protection. I'm gonna run it for a few miles to let things seat so-to-speak, then re adjust the tensioner. |
