Hi! My name is Rob. I'm a noob to riding, bike mechanics and obviously buell blasts lol. I bought an 01 blast a few months ago as my first bike to learn to ride on. Since then it keeps making me regret the purchase. Since the day I rode it home it has been hard to start while cold. Got it home and the idle was way to high. Most of my problems eased after realizing the carb boot was loose going into the cylinder. I readjusted carb and boot back to where boot seats and tightened as hard as I could. Rides really well after warming and I have got the idle back down. But still is really hard to start. So hard that I'm having to jump it or put it on a tender because I've ran the battery dead trying to start it. I am getting suction in the carb. When I do get the bike started with boot tightened I get get heavy back fire through the carb during warm up. Spitting gas. Thought maybe it could have been build up from giving slight throttle while trying to start. Also at that point if I give to much throttle it dies. Has 13000 miles, and only getting 35 mpg. Seems to help bike slightly if I try to manually choke the carb by hand or something that blocks the round carb opening better. Any help here? Like I said I am totally new to all this. I know I probably need to re jet the carb but I didn't think that would solve all problem, would it? And I don't know what settings to rejet to. I have not cleaned the carb. I have been researching on this site and I am leaning toward the auto enricher needing adjusted? Or replaced?l Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you fellow blasters!! |

Has the bike been modified? If you're not sure, post a picture or 2. A boot that is loose is probably no good anymore. Too tight is also not good, it won't make it seal better. Do you have any idea if the carb jets have been changed? Lastly-DO NOT TAKE THE CARB APART TO GIVE IT A GOOD CLEANING, despite what anybody tells you, this will cause you trouble. |

I don't believe there are any mods at all. I believe everything is stock. But when it comes to the jets I couldn't tell you if they had been changed before or not. I am the third owner. From riding it and knowing the idle was up high, makes me think the previous owner didn't re jet and just turned the idle up to compensate for a bad enricher or clogged pilot jet? |

Okay, slight update. Bought some starter fluid today after work to do some cold start testing. 3 generous sprays of the starter fluid into the carb intake and it started after just three or 4 cranks. I'm thinking that's verification of the the AE needing adjusted or replaced? Or am I still lookin at a jet problem? Or both? |

Jetting on the stock Blast is very lean. AE might be bad, but I'd really like to see a picture of the bike before I condemn it. Could be an old spark plug or the gap closed down. |

Another slight update. I today I tried the it with slight starter fluid again. Started right up. First try. While letting it warm I took the starter fluid and sprayed around the boot and other places that should have a good seal and I had no rpm change, which would indicate a good seal every where that should be. Thoughts? Or any idea where I should start? Gears, I'm working off my phone to message you guys. I have pics but this website won't let me upload from my iPhone because the file is bigger than 19xx pixels |

Depending on your phone, you can usually cut the size down by either emailing to yourself or sending it in a text message and save it from there. |
