Hello all,

New to the forum and hoping to get some guidance on how to fix my wife's 2002 Buell Blast.

We bought it used a bit over a year ago, and it ran fine at the time. Then, it sat for around 9 months with intermittent start ups (I am military, so when I was home I'd start it up and let it idle a bit to clean out the carbs and charge the battery).

Starting a month ago it had trouble starting and didn't want to idle. Originally, I thought the battery was dead, so I tried jump starting it. Pulled it behind a vehicle at speed, approx. 20 mpg, to try a jump and it worked. As soon as the vehicle stopped though, the bike died.

Got it running ok that night, but since it wont start up.

I have:

-Verified the spark plug is receiving spark, and replaced it
-Replaced the the spark plug wire
-Swapped out the fuel, and verified fuel is getting the to carb
-Removed the carb from the bike, removed the diaphragm and sprayed it out with carb cleaner and compressed air
-Replaced the battery

Bike is currently on a battery tender, and the battery is new. First couple of times trying to start it after the cleaning I got a bit of smoke, minimal, but since nothing and the bike wont start up.

Every once in a while it will start up and idle roughly for a few seconds to a minute but then dies.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Nick

Most commonly the slow/pilot jet clogs up from sitting and it won't idle. But a new #45 jet and replace it. It's about $6 and should be in stock at the local Harley dealer as it came stock on many big twins for years.

OR: ask for a slow/pilot jet for a 2005 FXST. It's a #45.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I will grab one from my Harley dealer.

Any ideas where I can find a diagram or how to as far as working on my carb on my Blast? How do I know how to remove it, how far to sync it back in?

My only experience with carb work is doing a cleaning on my Vmax, which only involved blasting out the jets with carb cleaner, and compressed air.

Thanks,
Nick

Why do you need a diaphragm? Avoid the replace everything approach to repair.
#1 part to fail: carb intake boot.
#1 part to cause a no start/no idle issue after sitting is a clogged slow jet.
Most other carb part failures are caused by the owners working on their carbs. (Usually "giving it a good cleaning" which is almost always unnecessary).

(and the diaphragm should be the same on all Harley and Blast stock CV carbs).

Got it.

Took the carb off last night, removed the slow jet and blasted it with carb cleaner and compressed air.

Put everything back together, the bike is running awesome now. A few coughs initially, but otherwise flawless!

Thanks for the help all!

Nick

If you happened to notice if it was a #42, which is stock or a #45. A #45 will help your bike run much better. If in the future you want to change it.
