we got a new gasket set from a buell Harley dealer and the top gasket that should be red plastic covered is just plain black metal... is it right? |

It's right, but (probably) an older version. What is the part number of the kit? |

17054-00yc 17058-02b 25349-03 ( clutch cover) I think it has a red one on it and I really think the oil is from the grommet. |

As long as they are metal they are probably fine. If you want a little extra insurance, you could add a light coat of rtv form a gasket on the mating surfaces. The push rod tube orings are easy leaks too, so a little RTV aroudn those from the inside while the rocker box is off is not a bad idea either. If they are the really old paper ones for sporters, drop them in the nearest trash can. But I don't think they even make those for the XB's. |

Yes, they are older sets, but fine. Frankly, I would only replace the grommet and see what happens. No sense in taking something apart that isn't broke (or leaking). No point and if you do, you only increase the chance it will leak when you're done! |
