The BAS The BAS. Brought to you by the letter ‘b’. Back story. My new 2009 Buell Blast with 1700 kms on it. Not a safety course bike. But mint condition, just dusty. Stopped one day on the road. after riding/having it for 100 kms. First thing I did was replace the battery. Thought that may be it. It would start for a bit. Till I put it in First. And stop. But the new battery, got me and the bike home. Then, It would start every couple of days. For 20 seconds or so, and stop. Try again in a couple of days. Run for 20 seconds and stop.
After testing all the safety’s. Clutch lever safety, Kickstand safety and the BAS. Third time was a charm. Bought used on e-bay. I hope it lasts. Harley wants 92.00 for a new one.
BIG Thanks to EZ, GearheadEric, & JetLee. You guys rock on all the Forums…… Me and friends Samuel Adams, Jack Daniels, and or Jim Beam will sit down for a meeting one day : -). Or Dr. Pepper & Shirley Temple, whatever : ) on me.
Poo, on all the mechanic guys, I talked to. Saying it’s the carb, Its the carb… Took Eric’s advice and did Not take apart the carb. Only looked in it. Clean as a whistle. And being NON mechanically inclined, but a photographer for 25 years, I fixed the issue. And all the other Mod’s….myself. I wanted to get to know the bike. Just not as intimate, this soon. You know what I mean : - ) oh well. Very excited, to ride again.
Three days now and it runs well. Up and down the alley. Took the road insurance off. Cause it wasn’t running. No pops, burps, etc. Pretty smooth sounding. Jardine sounds great. I have the Mix at about 2 and just over a half turns!
Next is to talk/write Dan on his Intake/boot system. I have the little K&N breather filter a T adaptor to get that silly tube re-routed from the Carb. I’d really like this Bad Boy Buell Breathing best it can… :-). Winter project… and figure out adjusting the primary, we’ll talk.
Need some help here. I've got a low mileage '02 Blast. Bought it last spring running but a broken belt and a real poor tail chop. Life got busy, and the bike sat. I did start it once and it did well. Now I've got this: No start - Pulled carb bottom to see how bad it was. Solid green crud, pulled carb off to remove and clean jets. Main jet tube completely blocked with green crud, main jet too. Replaced all three with new parts. Now it idles great, but won't transition off idle at all. Pulled carb apart, and soaked it in simple green in a ultrasonic machine for three hours with heat. Carb got grey looking, but cleaner. All passages seem clear. Put it back together, new jets, new boot, checked the rubber diaphram. Exactly as before, idles great, won't transition. Cleaned petcock, replaced fuel line and a new plug, charged the battery, exactly as before. Usually these things wont idle, never had one do this. This is Blast #4, just got #3 running with just a low speed jet. Any ideas?
Thanks for the comment EZ. I love the bike, handles really well. First bike in 10 years. Had a old honda 900, way too big for me. Blast is a treat to riding again. Running nicely, but all this carb talk is making me paranoid. It looked very clean when I re-jeted. But should I be running something through the line to make sure? Again, many thanks to all the Forums. Very grateful & a huge help.
Only run 93 premium. Gets bad quick. I have trouble keeping low speed jets clear, Blasts seem worse than the twins. One problem is too many bikes. Going to drain all fuel on my primary Blast this year. Still can't figure out the '02 that idles great, but won't transition off idle. Acts like it goes lean. Pops and dies.
Bad starter, too heavy oil, maladjusted "choke", maladjusted or bad TPS, bad battery cables, bad ignition module, trying to start with bike in gear, any number of faulty switches, stuck float needle or .......
I still have the opposite problem, starts great, won't accelerate. Dies if I twist the throttle. Sealed with a known good carb and it ran good. Swapped suspect carb to known good runner and same issue. Diaphragm look good, no holes tears or pinches. Seems like it won't pull fuel up as it goes to main circuit. Help?
KMBuell - check ignition and cup. Yeah - Erik - I'm slowly running down the list and manual - I'll get it sooner or later, I replaced the TPS and choke with known good items, Will start easy after first cold start, but 5 hrs later, same issue - between 3 hrs and just started - starts like a dream - weird. EZ
EZ, our bike are related! I'm sure mine is carb, it runs fine with the carb from my other Blast. And my other Blast won't run with this carb. Bike ran good before sitting and having fuel evaporate in it. Hate that nasty green stuff that gets left behind. Changed out all the jets, including the long tube jet. I've got to have a blockage somewhere. Time to go back into the ultrasonic cleaner again. Yours sounds like the module, I've seen a rash of melted ones lately. Never saw one before this year, now I've seen three, One in a blast, two in twins. Take a close look at it. Thanks for your help. Kevin
Naw - recharged battery, tightened battery connections and grounds, and fired on third try, figure a new plug and wire, advance it a tad, and I'm good to go. EZ
