Got this Blast cheap, now I know why. Wouldn't start even using starting fluid and bypassing carb, had spark. Cam timing was off but worse than that notice the main bearing is shot (there is a piece of it between the oil pump gear and the case) and the cam bearing and aluminum hole in the crankcase it goes into are galled.

Fix this engine, get another used engine, and/or hop up this one when rebuilding it? Will need a new right hand side crankcase as a minimum for rebuild though.

Suggestions?

You could fix the case half - it is alum - which if you know how to weld is easy to then fix - though you need a mill to finish fixing and press for dis and re-assembly.

Cast aluminum needs to be preheated prior to welding, else cracks will form when the weld cools. An experienced welder will be able to make the repair. Most likely a used case is cheaper than paying for welding and machining though.

Yeah - the guys in the shop would weld, then machine - something to do when production wasn't happening - lol - those days where 30 years ago though - lol - before cnc took over.

I really can't tell from the picture how bad it is, maybe if I saw it in person.
I'd look for a used engine. Cases can be found, but unless you're looking for high performance, I think a used engine will be a cheaper deal.

Nice find Patches. Heck, he couldn't buy two cams for the price of that motor.
