What type of tach - pics? Thumpe( http://www.ebay.com/usr/danscustomparts?_trksid=p2 047675.l2559 ) does a wonderful inexpensive rearset set up using the stock peg setup if your interested - call him/pm him and he can get you set up so you don't have to worry about dragging pegs - a lot like the Melvis racebike set up you'll find pictures of in this section - his quality of work is excellent. No arguements - you are asking about club times - ErikO is the best expert on this, the other guys I know are actually retired from riding - lol - and Eeeek is Eeeek - a long boring story now that no one cares about - except maybe him - lol - I appreciate him finding those times with enough names for me to verify and qualify his answer - meaning that the middle times are the ones to look at and aim for when beginning, and those are numbers that can be done by a Blast. Track days are good - I've only been to two, others have a lot more experience, especially Eeeek - but if you pay attention to the instructors, your times from the beginning of the day to the days end will be a vast improvement - which is why people and I recommend them. This will in turn improve your street skills as well - at least in confidence of what you can do with riding your bike.

EZ, it's a hard line hour and tach meter. It doesn't respond fast enough to use when accelerating, but it gives me enough info to learn the engine.

Does Dans peg setup give enough ground clearance? Can I reverse the shift lever instead of coming up with a different one?

"You realize pitching a bike into a turn has a greater fear factor (or adrenaline rush) than pitching a car into a turn (one can hurt a lot, the other might just be pulling back into the track!)"

ErikO. This is one thing I hope to figure out. In a car sliding around can be useful, or at least help me know where the limit is. How do you find the limit on a bike if sliding equals crashing?

EZ, I think you almost complimented me in there. Thanks.

Cross posted from the other thread.

EZ, you are not presenting things acurately and club racing is an area where I am an authority. Say what you like about me, but this is an area where you will no no success trying to discredit me.

Brian Bartlow is a club racer, not a pro. He's a very successfull one, but he's not what you respresent. He has won many championships in WERA, CCS and the AFM. He is very focused, knows how to market himself and an very talented rider. He also is not the untouchable rider you represent him as.

Over the last ten years, he mainly raced 650 twins and 250 production. he won many times in each of the classes, he also got beat many times by other club races. People like Dan Sewell, Jason Catching, David Raff, etc. All club racers who whould sometimes beat him, sometimes get beat by him.

He started to dominate 250 production and then other club racers rised to his level. He is always a threat for the win, but it's pretty far from a sure thing.

He formed Feel Like a Pro a few years ago because he had a vision. The 250 class was dying and he wanted to make club racing affordable and obtainable to anyone. He worked a deal with Kawasaki to get Ninja 250s and rented them out for $250 a day. It was a great model that he presented very well. You could rent a bike for the whole race seasons and just show up. He brought the class back from almost nothing to one of the bigger classes in the AFM. He built up the company and then sold it. He now runs Feel Like a Pro Dirt.

This does not make him the Rossi that you present. Brian has given the AMA a shot (as have many, many club racers). He is what I would call a very successfull club racer, not unlike Dave Stanton or Chris Siglin. He brings in more money racing than he spends when things go his way. At the same time, he has a day job (ALS EMT). A pro is something next level.

And finally, of course I posted best times. Racing is about who can win. Little kids don't have dreams of finishing midpack. I also posted other times. I have yet to see ANY times for the blast.

Track days are something entirely different. At track days, it's not about outright track times, it's about rider improvement. The best track bike is the bike you ride every day. If your every day ride is a Blast, then that's the best track bike for you.

Being the only person here who has REGULARLY had a Blast racing at a track (I have 3 in my shop, the fastest turning a 1:37 at 'Big Willow') and have watched lap times very carefully from the various Blast configurations and since no one else can provide any real factual feedback and this thread has turned into a pissing competition,
I'm going to close this thread.

Sliding doesnt always equal crashing. It can, but it can also be great fun!

eeek's statement is true, the best track day bike is your daily rider.

I only use stock pegs (on my personal bike) and still pass people. You dont need to use the whole tire, but you'll need to learn to hang off, with or without rearsets.

I havent seen Dans rearsets, you can make your own and adjust the pegs as necessary. Its not difficult.

I dont see the point in spending another $2000+++ (I have no idea what the 250's cost-dont care)on another bike that might only be marginally faster than a Blast and more expensive to run, just to get the feel of racing.

Just do it. Unless you have raw natural talent or they dont run a novice class, you wont be run off the track or be winning any podiums. They're not going to throw you in a class where you'll be run over. Its dangerous for everybody. Unless you're running with a short sighted club, they'll put you in a class you can safely compete in. Its only when you start to dominate a class that there'll be a fuss about what class you should be in.

Unless club racing is now at full capacity?!

FWIW: Yes little boys dream of being first. But grownups realize that there's always going to be someone faster. Racing is racing. Whether its a battle for first, fourth or who finishes last, its still fun. First is always most fun, but if thats all you're out there for, then you're missing the best parts.

Get to the track. E-mails are nice, but when people see you make the effort to be out there at the track, that pays off-Big Time. Every track day I've been at runs a class for Novices (or anybody else wanting to up their skill). It really pays off (no matter what bike you ride).

Yes - Dan's set up can use the stock shifter reversed. I've had my knee down enough to know that dragging pegs is no fun - lol - see my Blast in my profile - Eeek as I said in the other thread - you make my case for me - you and that guy are pro caliber, just not the top seeds -lol - I talk about the guy who'll show up, ride, then go home to the everyday - his times interest me because they are real to us regular guys. Your's and Brians - a different world. ErikO has the right of it - just do it and have fun doing it, because there will always be someone faster, so enjoy it and use it to improve your skills. Who knows - maybe some day someone will be using your times as targets for their own improvement in riding.

No, the 1:37 is in an XB frame. But thats why I asked for current Big Willow times and I'd tell you what it takes to get there. Low 1:40's are possible with a stock frame, wheels and a reliable motor with stock factory parts.

Hey everyone, new to the forum but i've been getting info from here for years. I'm putting together a racebike to race in the CMRA superstock E class against the infamous EX250. I'll be running the michelin city grip tires (best tire in my tack day experience), running a ninja 250 rear shock, and building a custom exhaust. any pointers or racing hits will be greatly appreciated.

The rear will be steadier in the corners the more you can slide back, one of the reasons Works suggest the heavier springs for track usage. Have fun!

right on. thanks Ezblast. correction "i'll be running the ninja 650 rear shock with plenty of preload" I'm also working with a carbon fiber guy who made my number plates and will be making my oil containment belly pan. he'll be sending all of the pieces we come up with into production to serve more racing blasts.

Here are some very late pictures of me,and my blast at a track day at texas world speedway. Since then I've added preload spacers to the front suspension and I'm working on a new exhaust.

Superbrace sells a fork brace, racetech sells gold-valve emulators that fit a 2000 Ninja 250 that fit us as well, and Works sells a nice fork spring kit as well. Galfker pads stop the bike with 1 finger, a SS braided front line is better feedback, this shock would work wonders and since you do not look heavy the spring would be perfect - http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIT-BIKE-SHOCK-DNM-REAR-28 0MM-REMOTE-RES-ADJUSTABLE-/390820243438?hash=item5 afeb3a7ee&vxp=mtr and 7.5 weight fork oil is great for response.

I should go to Texas Motor Speedway and watch Track Days. I only live 5 minutes from the track.

Ed & Erick

I don't have leathers, I sold them when I moved south. I think that I would like to go and watch one time before I get involved.

My major concern is that when they see a guy almost 80 years, old that can barely walk, they may have reservations about going around in a circle with me near them...LOL

Completely off the wall question - anyone have an inexpensive source for "good" knee pucks/sliders?

And yes, Kenny, I think you would rock it at a track day!!!! :-)

Jay,

How can I get a schedule of when they have track days?

I would be interested in doing a few laps if they would allow me. There are places where age discrimination is warranted.
