Brisk racing plug (BOR10LGS) came today. Installed it and fired up the bike. Seemed to start and idle just fine. I'll use the stock 10R12(A) as a carry-with in case this plug has issues as well.

If the weather cooperates, I'll be able to take the bike south to work this week. I'll report back on its performance. Otherwise it will be next week before I really wring it out.

EZ, I've run it with connector unplugged. AE doesn't close so it as it warms up it floods out.

It would be too lean - not flood out. What jets you running.

Jets are 175/45 with no air filter and the V&H exhaust. An air filter will go on it whenever I get it running properly. Way rich and fouled plug. I tested the pins on the connector to the AE. Violet/orange I get nothing. Service manual says ignition module. Have been checking the wiring.

Any difference or still the same? - you definately want to stop the tank leak. The other has many ways to be dealt with.

What tank leak? I don't have a tank leak. I did all the carb work including adjusting the float bowl and still have it running too rich. It starts cold fine. As it gets warmer, the AE is not working. Voltage to the violet/Orange wire is does not exist. I tested the wiring as per the service manual. Looks to be the ignition module as stated in the service manual.

How rich is too rich? - if you do constant high rpm - over 5000rpms - then you will get some reversion, unless you have a customized exhaust, like mine and a few others. Is your porcelain black?

I'll go through it again. 2007 Blast with 2050 miles on it. Sat for three years. New battery. New V&H exhaust. Drained gas out of gas tank and replaced with premium.

Took carb apart. Cleaned old nasty gas out of it. Placed jets and needle in ultrasonic cleaner with mild acid solution. Cleaned them until they were shiny. Sprayed carb cleaner through openings as described by service manual. Adjusted float. Reassembled everything. New super boot.

I start it. It runs fine until it starts to warm up. Then it floods out. Too rich. The AE is not working. I jumped the AE with a battery charger and it works and is good. I tested the pins at the connector as instructed by the service manual. The Violet/Orange wire is not providing the -12 volts it should. According to the service manual I am to replace the ignition module.

Well thats sounds like a sound diagnosis to me.
You could just bypass the module and hook up 12 volts to the AE, if you want. But I certainly understand about keeping it stock and not butchering the wiring. Thats a better way to go. That module sounds like a nice spare to have for anyone no longer running an AE.

Thank you Gearhead. I had thought of running wires directly from the battery to the AE but am worried about the wattage. That it might be too much. That way I would not have to butcher up the wiring.

Hi, I am a newbe and I got a 2001 Buell Blast 500 from a friend (very low mileage - 1200). When my bike runs, it idles soooooo high, it sounds like I am revving the engine, but I am not. It is super peppy/jumpy, in first gear, without giving it any gas, letting out the clutch slowly will make it leap forward almost. Is that just a 'Buell thing"? My experienced friends ride Harleys so they don't know and can't really compare. They tried adjusting the idle down, but then the bike would just keep dieing out. Thoughts? And thanks.

My experience is it will idle up to 2000rpm after a cold start. The idle should be 1200 rpm fully warmed up. I put a tach on mine but you can get
An inductive timing light with tach reading or an inductive tach that clips over the plug wire. Basically it will race after a cold start then should settle down as it warms up.

That's a classic sign of a torn/cracked intake boot, probably the most frequent blast problem.

"I had thought of running wires directly from the battery to the AE but am worried about the wattage. That it might be too much. That way I would not have to butcher up the wiring."

Wattage is a product of Voltage X Amperage

The battery supplies Voltage.
The device draws Amperage.

You're fine to wire a 200CCA battery to a 5A AE.

If the battery supplied amperage, it would blow every fuse in your fuse block without ever turning on the ignition. In reality, the fuses blow when a device draws more amperage from the battery than the fuse is rated for.

I hope this makes sense.

HI, I posted above and people said my problem sounds like a cracked/torn intake boot. I ordered one and my friend is going to help me change it. Is the bike ok to ride in the meantime because I am a beginner and would like to get in as much practice as possible. Thanks

P.S. Could you preface any answers with my name b/c I am having a hard time following these responses. Not that tech savvy. thx

Paigeken2000,
Welcome to the Thumper Forum!

I would not ride your bike with the torn boot. What is happening is your bike is running really lean with the torn boot and too lean of a fuel mixture will hurt your engine.
