Hey guys, im new here and I have a problem. I just bought a 2001 buell blast. The guy had it on a charger when we got there it started right up and ran fine. Bought it went next door to put gas in it and it wouldn't start. Went across the street bought a spark plug put it in and the bike started right up and my cousin drove it to his house. I went to go pick it up from my cousins house and it wouldn't start again, so we got another plug and changed it and it still wouldn't start so we left it. My cousin got home and hooked it up to his charger and said it started right up. We went to go pick it up this morning and again it won't start. Hooked it up to the charger and it still won't start. I don't think its the battery because it should start when hooked up to the charger right? Sorry for the long post just wanted to get all the details. | ||

Connor, Remove the battery and take it to an AutoZone or NAPA or any parts place that sells batteries, and have the battery checked. By the time you are finished having the battery checked some of the more experienced guys on here will give you some other pointers. Kenny G | ||

Welcome! The question is: is it turning over and not starting or will it not turn over? Being on a battery charger is no guarantee it will start. It depends on the battery charger, condition of the battery and what the actual problem is. If you know where the points/timing cover is, pull it off and check to see if the LED on the ignition module is flashing when the engine is turning over: provided the problem is the engine turns over and it won't start. | ||

Thank you, and It turns over it just won't start. I already pulled the cover off and the light is flashing so I don't think that the module is the problem. | ||

Since you now have multiple spark plugs, use an extra to see if it sparks. The LED flash is consistent? It flashes with every power stroke? It's not one flash followed by a few small ones? | ||

When we checked for spark the other day it wasnt sparking, by then my cousin got it started the next day. And yes the flash is consistent. | ||

Got it home. Its not getting spark. I don't think its the battery because it turns over fine and we had it hooked to the charger and still no spark. Checked all the wires I could find I don't see any frays and the grounds all look good. All of the fuses are good, and the led flash on the ignition module is consistent. The only thing I can think is a bad coil which i've read is rare. Any other ideas? | ||

Check the spark at the coil. Check to see that the ignition module is breaking voltage to the coil. Is the bike stock? Has anything been changed? | ||

Dumb question but how do I check those two things? And yes, as far as i know everything is stock. | ||

See if you get spark at the plug wire. I still doubt the battery though. EZ | ||

Concur. You can check the coil with another known good spark plug cable or with a grounded screwdriver making a small gap between the coil spark plug wire terminal and the screwdriver (be sure to use not to touch the metal of the screwdriver!). The screwdriver can be grounded by touching the metal part against the farm or engine or with some alligator clips. Or you can shove the screwdriver into the coil terminal and check for spark at the other end. The ignition module does the same thing as points. It builds up voltage in the coil by opening and closing the circuit to the coil. That means a test light against one of the power leads going to the coil should flicker. Chances are if the ignition module LED is flashing, the coil is getting the spark impulse. Spark initiation can also be checked with a timing light. Lastly-a weak yellow spark is bad. It should be blue and jump a pretty decent gap. | ||

Ok I was messing with the coil and spark plug wire and the bike fired up. Took it for a ride and it ran fine, let it sit for a couple hours and started it again. The next morning it wouldn't start. I replaced the coil and spark plug wire and it still won't start so I guess that wasn't the problem. I noticed that sometimes when I turn the key on the headlight won't come on and the bike wont turn over but if I tap the ignition switch with a screwdriver or turn the key off and back on the light will come on and the bike will turn over ( but still won't start). Could a bad ignition switch be causing this even if the bike is turning over? |
