Concur - 45, or 46 are good choices.

The slow jet is a brand new 45. The main is a 170. All of the components in the carb are new except the float. When I got the bike it was so gunked up that fuel wouldn't even get into the carb. I know you guys consider it a sin but I cleaned the carb and replaced all the parts the slide baffle was torn so it was replaced as well and i replaced the auto choke. The only thing left is that the float level is wrong. It runs fantastic once it is warm. It just won't start with out spritzing some starter fluid or gas in the carb but starts right up once you do this.

It takes more fuel in the bowl to run at high rpms than to start the bike. So I'm very very doubtful it's float level.
Unplug the AE/TPS. See what happens. After it starts and warms up the idle should slow and "lope" and act rich. If not, the AE isn't working (it only comes 'off' with voltage. Engine heat will cause it to open up, but it takes a very long time).
Then check for vacuum leaks. It the vacuum nipple capped? Is the O ring, washer and spring on the idle mixture screw? What is that screw set at? What is the cold idle speed set at(if possible to check -2000rpms)?What is the hot idle speed set at (one influences the other, they aren't separately adjustable)? Das Boot? : ((have to ask!)
What filter are you running? Run with the box off and manually choke the carb with your hand-see how that works (BE CAREFUL).
The float/needle could stick closed and free up after starting. A few raps with a screwdriver handle could free it up if that is the case.
Did you change any float related parts? There is a surprising amount of difference in CV float bowl related parts-anything look or fit differently upon replacement?

...and maybe I've given this site a bad rap but: It is only I that beats the "don't take your carb apart to give it a good cleaning" drum. But personal and Badweb/online experience has proven this to be very solid advice. Yours may have been the rare valid case. But there have been so many (many, many) low mileage bikes that have had their carbs pulled part for no good reason other than someone who didn't have any idea what was wrong and offered up the advice "take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning" hoping that would fix the problem.

and apparently I'll keep beating that drum! Lol; )

Erik,

Keep beating that drum.

I worked for 2 hours cleaning my carburetor and it still ran lousy. After finding that the vent hose was squeezed shut and replacing the vent hose with a tank vent gizmo the bike runs better than ever.

Lots of great questions asked. Let me answer. Das boot is brand new I have checked for air leaks by squirting starting fluid around it. No leaks. Vacuum nipple cover is there. Air fuel mix spring washer and oring are new and installed. Set to 2 3/4 turns. Float needle is brand new and moves freely. Verified AE ( also brand new) works by looking down carb while removed verified it was open. Installed started the bike gave it about six minutes turned of bike pulled of carb looked and verified that it closed. I cannot verify the idle speed but I have adjusted it a lot trying to see if I can find a setting that will get it to start on its own. No luck. I cannot think of anything that I could be the culprit other than the float level. Which I have set per the tech manual. I will unplug the TPS and AE see what happens. But let's say it was the float level would I raise it up or down?

After you finish the AE/TPS test you may want to check the LED on the module. Assuming everything else is working properly, that's what I'd look at to see if its functioning properly. A stock module will skip the first power stroke before it sparks (FYI).
I don't see why you're having a problem (as I seriously doubt it's float adjustment) if everything else is in order. Are you trying to start the bike in gear? How is the spark? Blue, yellow? Have you changed anything you forgot to mention?

I bought the bike in 2003 used. It was one of their training bikes. It ran great. I sold it to a friend in 2005 when I had to transfer ( I'm military). I was transferred back to the same area years later and found out the bike was just sitting in a garage and the person I sold it to had transferred. I contacted them and bought the bike back for a really good deal but the carb was absolutely plugged up. Float valve stuck gas hose plugged etc. I will unplug TPS and check color of spark soon..

Argh!! hang in there! Drain tank and new hose as well - add a little seafoam to new tank of premium. Drop bowl & empty, switch out old jets for new, spray gumout on float mech with mo bowl under it, check float bowl for cleanliness, clean if nesc, dry, assemble. Play with till smooth idle, then gently rev while spraying small shots of carb cleaner into carb fo 30 sec.s, let idle, if falls back into smooth idle, leave alone, if not repeat. If after 5 tries or so - no improvement, may have to inspect needle for blockage, and diaphragm for health. should settle in and engine mildly warm by then and carb settled down from hi idle before testing.

EZ. Rex here. I believe there was a fellow putting a blast motor in an XB frame. Is that covered in this section? what ever happened with the idea? I have always thought it would be a great idea. REX

Rex the details of the build are in the Darkside tales section - several in fact - going a different route myself - currently 345 lbs going to 325 lbs - who needs XB stuff except rear xbs tail for lightening, plus ebr battery, no plastics - this bike out handles a CR in the corners at over a 100lbs less - that is fun.

FWIW: 20-200 INCH lbs 1/4" drive torque wrench at Harbor Fright for $9.99. Regularly $35 or $19 currently on sale.
You'll need the special $9.99 coupon which came in the newspaper or circular delivered in the mail.

Erik,

Thank you that is a worthwhile tip. I just went and dug my latest Harbor Freight flyer out of the recycling bin. I forget to look at the entire flyer sometimes and miss bargains like this one.

Thanks Again

Does anybody else have a oily wet airbox after long highway rides?

I went out last week for about 120 miles at 70mph (sometimes more) almost the whole time. When I got home I had a bit of a mess.

Yes, that can happen. Take off the cover and see where the PCV hose is pointed. My guess is its pointed away from the carb which is better for the engine, but will fill your airbox up more.
Either point it back into the carb inlet or reroute the hose out of the airbox. But if your Blast blows a lot of oil, it will just coat something else. So before you spend a whole bunch of time making it pretty, test it out and see how much oil your Blast is going to put out.

Erick,

I picked up the inch LBS torque wrench at Harbor freight. Since I still have the stock exhaust system what do I need in addition to the torque wrench to work on the chain adjustment?

Looking for a few hard to find blast parts

surprisingly enough, I cannot find a shift lever or a standard
tall seat for my buell blast.

Anyone have advice on any websites to search on?
Or would anyone be willing to sell me these parts?
