The Blast won't shift past 2nd gear. The primary side is good so the HD dealer says 15 hours of labor as a basic estimate to do the work on the tranny side. Is this reasonable?

Yes. Tranny repair involves complete motorcycle tear down. There isn't any way I'd pay for trans repair and get the same HD trams back. Frankly, I'd part the bike out and put the (repair) money towards another Blast.
IMHO.

Buy the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and PARTS BOOK for your YEAR P3 !!!

Learn to be your own MECHANIC(not a technician) ...

MECHANIC: Can think out of the BOX !!!

technician: Only knows what is printed in the book and is easy miss-lead ...

You do realize you're looking at half an engine case? Trans is easy, it's getting there that's the work. Read the procedure in the manual.

Contrary to the popular myth though - splitting the cases is not required unless doing the main bearing group.

I'm not convinced it needs a complete tear down. I'm guessing something came loose, something is too tight or the shift drum or gears jammed. Sometimes gentle finesse is all it takes to undo it. However, if brute force was applied (which is too often the case), then it may be indeed too late.
I Still stand by my original post: Blasts are too cheap to spend that kind of money (and effort) and get a stock blast back.
Another Blaster here bought a Blast that allegedly had the trams done and it still jumps in first : ( And there are others : (: (

So EZ, are you actually saying you can pull the trans without splitting the cases? If so-how? Pictures?

I agree with Gearheaderiko, Blasts are cheap, cheap cheap, but my impediment with getting a 2nd one is not money, but rather one particular biological entity, who is neither here nor there with a repair, but making a trip to Kentucky or where ever to BUY another motorcycle....

There are several Blasts around. I looked at some other bikes, a single cylinder BMW model, but my legs are too short. ABS and fuel injectors would be nice to have, but as everyone here knows once you start building up your skill set, tool set, and accessories, it gets to be harder to change direction.

No - the main bearings on both the cam gear and crank would need pressing off, however, if you wanted to do a partial teardown to the tranny - you can get to the gears and stuff though -

? Okay, I've seen those videos and I see half a Blast engine on a bench. I really dont have the time to search through BRO to find the write up you talk about.
But, yes, there is a bunch of worthwhile stuff you can get too and check without splitting the case. But actual transmission repair means splitting the case and thats where all the work is. The actual transmission gear work is very straightforward and easy, once you get too it.

Check my profile: "Trap door for transmission"! There's a reason for it and some of the Badweb sponsors can machine the Blast engine for a trap door (I checked); )

Everything and the engine would stay with the bike avoiding the complete disassembly of the motorcycle (which is where the time is).

I cheated I dropped the motor and replaced it for a salvaged motor and am back up blasting motors are a lot cheaper and Easier then tearing apart your motor unless you want to do a bunch of other mods in the process.

I did a transmission job on mine, it was am involved process. This isn't a job for beginners. You'll need a good indoor place to work and a motorcycle service stand and various things to block up the engine as your remove it and hold the frame.

First you will need to pull the engine out of the frame. There's isn't a lot left once the motor has been removed.

Once the engine is on the bench you'll need to split the cases.

Once the cases are split you can access the gear clusters and shift drum. Look to the left, here is the gear cluster.

In my case the bike had been used a "Riders Edge" trainer, someone fell off the bike and forced the gear lever up, this deformed the shift drum which in turn scored the shift fork limiting the rotation preventing, in my cast shifting above third gear.

The you'll need to reassemble the bike. You will need both the service manual and parts book for the bike. Don't attempt without, also there are several errors in the manual that will prevent certain steps from being completed in the most expedient fashion.

It's a big Mo-Fo of a job, and some of the parts you will need are real wallet whamers.

Indeed it might be easier to obtain a second hand motor and install it, but there will be some DMV hassles eventually.
