I am ok just brused a bit. I caused about 4500.00 dollars in damage to the Shiver. I still ride the Blast just not as much. Now I will ride it a bit more until I get the Shiver back. I was more shaken up then anything. All the protective gear I wear saved me.

I was in the hospital Saturday-Sunday this weekend. I am Totally Alright!

It all started on Saturday when the Little Kid had a tree job. He has tree climber that is 57 years old. I showed up at the site Saturday morning and started pulling ropes and hauling brush. They had 3 pines and a large maple tree with secondary portions of the trunk extending out over the house and one of the pines hanging towards the house.
We got three down in a couple of hours. All that was left was dropping one 50 foot pine trunk, cleaning up, chipping and exchanging wood(pine for maple) with the neighbor across the street from the job site. The climber whistled me over and told me to put his spikes on he wanted to teach me to climb, I'm up for it, what the heck. So he straps them on me and walks me over to a trunk section that was down and has me straddle it and step up on it. He showed me how to spike in and get it loose. He told me I was a natural, go figure. He takes me over to the last trunk standing and tells me to bear hug the trunk and step up with one foot. I'm climbing! Walking all the way around it with no safety rope or saddle. It was great. I get down take the spikes off and we finish the job. By the time the job is done it is dark, I am tired, my knees are hurting and all I want to do is go home and go to bed. I get home, take a shower and go to bed, but something is just not feeling right, my chest is hurting!
I whine about it a little, rub it, but it just doesn't feel right, I get to thinking maybe I'm having a heart attack. After puttering around al little bit the Little Kid drives me to the hospital an drops me off and I leave him with instructions not to tell ANYBODY knowing full well it is going to be a long long night...

I walk in about 11 pm by my self, and they make me sit around for a little while. Then they take my BP and screen me then give me an EKG. The EKG guy has me go sit back in the waiting room. Before you know it they call me back ahead of all the crying babyies(adults and kids)that were there before me and put me in an ER room. Nurse Jill shows up. Nurse Jill does the normal stuff, take blood, start an IV and hooks me up to an EKG machine. Jill leaves and comes back and asks about ED drugs and then tells me they can't give me the nitro test because I took Cialis in the last 7 days. If it is a heart attack the nitro makes the chest pain go away and if it isn't a heart attack the pain will still be there.

The next nurse I get is nurse Jack, and he explains the rest of what my night is going to be like, 3 sets of blood tests every 6 hours to look for the heart attack specific marker.
First test was low, second test showed much elevated, third test I was back to normal.
In the meantime, Jack is my morphine man. My knees were so bad I had trouble walking into the ER, I asked him for motrin for the swelling which he brought with the morphine. I was admitted to the hospital, but they did not have a room for me in cardiac(no nurses) so they brought a hospital bed in for me. They took me for X-rays, CAT scans, and a ride on a tread mill! How cool is that?
Anyways, I turned into a jack-hole after 16 hours. All the blood tests were negative, the x-rays showed nothing, the CAT scan showed nothing, and the stress test(with the sore knees) showed I did not have a heart attack. I have an arymithia that did not even show up on the stress test. It was getting around 4 pm Sunday and I had not seen the on duty heart specialist from the heart group that originally had me admitted me. I came to the conclusion that the doctor forgot about me because I wasn't on his floor. I wanted out, the nurses kept referring me to the absent doctor, I'm telling them to go get him! They said they had a page in for him and he would make his rounds. I explained that I need to be released so they could make more room for somebody that really needed to be there. I'm getting pissed. My girlfirend finds me sitting with the head of the bed elevated all the way up and my feet up in the air. Every hour I called for a nurse, I wanted out and all I needed was for a doctor to sign me out. The two shifts of nurses that I went through at this point both stuck to the story that the doctor was busy in the hospital and would get here as soon as he could. I called the operator and asked for a patient advocate but it was Sunday and they don't work weekends. I stood at the nurses station until someone would ask me what I wanted, I told them I want OUT! they said a doctor would be with me, I kept going back every 15 minutes. What do you need? I want out! What do you need? I want out! Finally a nurse slows down and I tell her I have been here since 11 pm yesterday, all my tests are normal, all I need is a doctor to sign me out! She says you doctor is in the hospital. Now I am pleading with her, Please, You don't understand, I have been admitted to the hospital and I have been forgotten in the ER! She smiles, and says "I'll fix that" I go back to my bed, and I hear on the overhead "Nursing supervisor 10600" Not more then 5 minutes after that some dot head walks in and tells me all my tests are negative and he is releasing me under the condition that I see my doctor ASAP and if I have any other symptons come back immediatly.

Over all the nursing staff was superior, the testing staff was superior, but the guy that signed, me out must have been golfing cause I was fine. I am thankfully pissed off and pain free!
I also learned a valuable lesson, I had two guys show up in the next curtained off area, one right after the other both for back pain....Damn it people the ONLY thing they are going to do for you is give you T3, that is it...STAY HOME you are not going to be given some miracle pain releasing surgery because you showed up to the ER. I heard a broken shoulder, an morbidly obese woman that fell getting out of the car with groceries and bruised her leg, some old guy that had some sort of crazy problem, a violent drunk that was giving nurse Jack a problem, a couple of car accidents, some one that wouldn't stop moaning, an asian lady that I could not tell what was going on because they were speaking japanese, and a 10 other people that came and went in the next curtained off area.
I was trying to explain to the nurses that They needed to release me, I was taking up a valuable piece of realestate and I shouldn't be there. I figure they were just teaching me a lesson for being there thinking I had a heart attack. At least now I know what a heart attack does not feel like. I'm probably going to be the guy that doesn't suffer, mine is going to be BIG and giving me CPR isn't going to help...it's just going to leave you exhausted...and all my admirers longing....

The great news is my knees are better even after being on my feet all day today, my heart is great, and I just have to learn to go a little easier when I am cutting trees.

It's been a day… It was 65 here in E. Central Il today. Ok, so it was windy, as in wind advisory issued by Nat'l Weather Svc. windy. It's Feb! There was NO WAY that the Blast was staying home today, and I was gonna be on its back.

1st. 50 mile commute, through a couple of small towns, but mostly county highways that connect the cornfields. 10 miles from my destination the bike quits. Outta gas? Probaby not, but I cut over to reserve. No dice. Loosen gas cap. Nothing. Get off bike and walk around. Crap, the plug wire is hanging, ok… I'll put it back on. No I won't. I must have forgotten to Locktite the resistor cap onto the spark plug threads, and it vibrated off. Where's the cap? In the plug wire boot. Can I get it out? No. Call AAA. 1.5 hours later, I'm back on the road. Better late than never.
Next - gotta run an errand on my way home. It's closer to take the highway, than the country roads. No big deal. It's a warm day. Heading west to I-57, I notice that I'm going into quite the headwind. Go to hop on 57 on ramp, a giant gust of wind kicks up. The ramp curves into the headwind. I push on the handlebar, but the wind is literally 30MPH. There is no way I'm gonna make the curve. I slow down the best I can, but the bike skids into the downward sloping soft grass/ground at the side of the road. Somehow, I don't panic, pull in the clutch, and ride it out. Both the bike and I are upright, never hit the ground, and all is right with the world. Ok, back and on the road. On I-57 and the winds are howling. I'm literally trying to split the 2 lanes, and I'm leaning the bike like I'm in a twisty just to get the thing to go straight down the road. Forget this. I hit the next off ramp (but I'm only doing 55, since anything faster & I figure I'll be in of the road again). Finally I made it home safe & sound.

2 Lessons from today :
1) Loctite the resistor cap. Always.
2) I'm pretty sure that the MSF course is what saved my ass today. That's why I didn't panic & slam the brakes. Take it! Worth every second.

Wow, I go away for awhile and Swampy has a heart attack climbing a tree.

Stop it!

Thanks for keeping the forum going while I was gone. Been a long strange trip these past few months. Threw the back out for the first time in Jan. 11, got Lyme disease in May 11, moved out of the house on my own with a Blast and dog in June 11, in July 11 I got a $1,200 Concours that looks like a Shark, furloughs dropped my paycheck 10% in Aug. 11, re-met an old girlfriend in Oct 11, MSF classes were cut due to no one signing up in Oct/Nov 11, holidays without wife/kids in Dec. 11, Jan. 12, Blast sucked goo into carb and croaked, Feb. 12 got the flu, in March I found out work was up for sale and my most excellent boss was leaving and in April my dog died.

Good news is a qualified mechanic buddy of mine has got the Blast running again so I'm a two motorcycle man sans dog.

Loud, hungry and loyal; she was a good dog. I miss her. She actually liked me, the silly mutt.

Off to teach an MSF course. Rock on, fellow Blastards.

Hi All, not new to the forum or to Buells- had to sell my S2 last yr and have been making do with a Honda VTX and my Goldwing. Ran across a 2007 Buell Blast with 1200 miles on it for $1700 today and am seriously considering it for a eound town scoot. Bike was used in a rider training program and is in very good shape and has been maintained by the local Harley dealer. The only issue I see with the bike is that the clutch does not allow the gears to shift without a huge clunk or grinding. The intermediate adjustment is wide open- there is not more adjustment left. I asked the owner about it and he doesn't know and has not tried doing the adjustment at the basket. Anything else come to anyones mind about the '07 models. What mods should I be thinking about? It looks like after market exhaust is very limited, so going to do the 1 1/2" hole mod and of course open up the air intake. Would like to do a rear fender eliminator if possible and take that fugly belt guard off also. Thanks all!

The 07 should be a pretty good machine.
The clutch should have the internal adjustment made first then the cable.
Try that, if all else fails you could make a clutch tool out of PVC and check the plates.
There is a clutch plate upgrade to make the engagement much less harsh. Sometimes when the primary chain is too tight the clutch basket will tilt (cokk) on the input shaft and cause the clutch plates to not fully disengage when the clutch is operated. Also you might want to check what oil is in the primary, as you know 20-50 full synthetic will make things nice and slippery....

Concur with Swampy.
Get an aftermarket exhaust. The 1 1/2 inch diameter of the stock exhaust will seriously limit performance, if thats what you're really after. The D&D is better, with a 1 5/8 inch head pipe and is a good, but loud, performer. V & H, Jardine have the 1 3/4 inch pipe and unless you go custom, offers the best chance at limitless performance.
The exhaust is the single best bang for your buck in performance. Freebies like a modded intake cant hurt. But you really have to plan after that and decide what you really want. $1000 bucks can get you the same performance, but in 2 different ways. One way is a gateway to more performance mods. The other way is a dead end. If you're trying to replace an S2, its best to save your money and buy another one, unless you really love your Blast. I could probably have an S2, XB and a 1125 for what I've spent on Blasts, but thats my choice and I knew that going in. But its been VERY rewarding!

Yeah, the S2 was a blast to ride, not trying to replace it, just want a small thumper to get back and forth to work (I live about 5 miles from work)- my Goldwing is a bit much daily around town.
Local H-D dealer has done all service work on all the school's bikes so this one has been maintained pretty well. I doubt the bike has ever seen the high side of 45 mph...
Will do the mod on the footpeg mount to make the plate easier to get on and off and do the clutch adjustment the way it should be.
So my plan as it stands right now is this:
Replace tires with Pirelle Diablos
Cut corner off of exhaust for right now
Airbox mod
Replace tailight with a Ducate LED model
replace flasher relay with LED model

Long term:
new exhaust
new airintake
clean up tailend
remove belt guard and clean that up
fork brace
handlebars

Do levers from any other model bike fit the Blast? OR do I need to just shorten the factory ones-I like a 3 finger grab and have gotten used to short levers.

Thanks Folks

Also re-adjust primary to loose side - 16 flats out or until you hear noise - lol. The rest in time, most do handlebar swap out to superbike - bike should have came that way, no cable troubles in the swapping either. If you like the twisties - the oversized, regular for occasional twisties but need in-city nimbleness, and the st66 for pure commuting - of course Pirelli is the brand.
Best mileage
st66
Diablos
Then the stock Pirelli - lol

Thanks everyone for the advice and more importantly, the willingness to share your knowledge.
got the Blast home last night, cleaned up some of the stickers and the reflectors, started taking the taillight off to do a flush mount taillight.
Plan for tonight is to pull the exhaust off- it needs paint and I am going to cut the corner off while it is off. I did notice that the rocker cover is seeping some oil so I need to replace the gasket- I remember that there was a preferred gastet set when I did my S2- can someone point me in the right direction with this and a source for thse type parts?
Also- where can I source the jets so I can tune the carb?
Thanks all!!!

Jets: Dennis Kirk, Bike Bandit, Harley Davidson, American Sport Bike. Don't buy a kit, just buy jets.

But please, before you rip into the bike, ride it. Put a 100 miles on. Make sure you don't have any problems that you'll end up chasing aftermaking mods and not know if you caused the problem or if it was already there.

Yes....those bars....first thing I did when I got my Blast home (literally) was dig in the shed and grab a set of drag bars. They would only fit backwards, but it was still better. My wife "it's a brand new bike, what are you doing to it?" It only had 40 miles on it: )

Ok, started wrenching on the Blast- spacer is still in the primary adjustment bolt- so doing that tonight before proceeding to the clutch adjustment. 16 flats out from when the idle dips, correct? Picking up the NGK Iridium plug (DPR9EIX-9) and the 15N 8mm ign wire at lunch today. My Renthal bars are too low so ordering Superbike bars and new grips this evening.

I want to say again, how much I appreciate everyones help on this bike- I have worked on a lot of old school bikes and my S2 but it is so nice to be able to tap into what has proven to work on this bike to wake it up.

I have searched for the air box mod and so far all I have found is where everyone says to do it- would someone mind sending me to a link with step by step how to..?

Thanks again everyone!!

Air box mod
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/201 64/231077.html?1239116237

As far as the primary adjustment- no, that's wrong. That would be the adjustment per the manual except 16 flats instead of 7. Try and learn the search function of Badweb and be patient. I know where to find stuff, but its all here. If EZ, me, Swampy, Jprovo has their stamp on it you can trust it. Otherwise ask if you found the right link. There are others you can trust too, but I can't think or list all their names.
The repair manual way (16 instead of 7) or the by ear methods are best. The repair manual way, followed by the "by ear" way is the closest you'll get to perfect.

Important the primary adjustment bolt is Inch pounds! Though you're not likely to make that mistake, better safe than sorry!

"By Ear" Method:
Ride bike for a half hour - then park while running on flat level ground, take 2 adjustable wrenches - one for the adjuster and one for the locking nut - loosen till you hear a change in sound, then tighten till sound goes away - stop - hold adjuster bolt in place and tighten locking nut - done.
Note - if you suspect your chain is too loose - then tighten till idle drops, then loosen till you hear a change in sound, etc.

so- had a full day of wrenching on the Blast. Got the primary adusted, changed the primary oil (it was pretty dirty), got the clutch adjusted at the basket and then up from there. The shifter lever was another story- had to do a little relief on the slot so I could get it tight enough where it would not spin.
Now- I seem to have a new problem. When I drained the primary, I let it drain for 30 min or so, then filled it with 20w50 syn oil. I buttened the bike back up, got the shifter lever sorted out and took it up the drive- I couldn't get it to shift out of 1st to begin with, second time up the drive, it shifted 1st and 2nd nice and smooth but no higher, then I took it a couple blocks up the road and it would shift 1st, 2nd 3rd very smoothly but I cannot get it to shift to 4th or 5th at all- any ideas what I have done wrong or what I should look for next?

Primary too full? Did you check the level (since you had the cover off)? Did you drain a quart out?

Clutch adjusted incorrectly?

Primary chain too tight (or in extreme cases-extremely loose)?

Yup- drained it, cleaned plug (had some filings on it, not too much but some was present). Primary adjustment, then clutch adjustment.

But did you check the level?
Obviously something was done wrong as it shifted fine before you did the work. What method did you use to adjust the primary chain?

And it may sound silly but, is your shift lever tight? Some have had trouble shifting only to find out their shift lever is just loose enough to slip on the harder 1st & 2nd gear shifts.

Not a fan of the engineering behind the shifter WTH? Spoke with the guy who ran the Rider's Edge program and he states that the bike probably never was used in anything other than 1st-3rd gear- thinking back on it, I drove it home and everywhere I drove I was doing 30 mph and under so I cannot say I got it above 3rd either. After a lot of reading on here, I have concluded that it probably needs the detent and prawl adjustment- one indicator is that it just flashes the nuetral light but does not lite it up. Started pulling the primary today and will get everything sorted by Tue. IF nothing else, at least I will know it has been doen.
YEah- I verified the level of the fluid and I am working on a fix for that $#% shifter- something along the lines of drilling an index hole that intersects both the shifter and the spacer and installing a roll (torsion) pin to keep the two pcs aligned and not slipping. NOt really sure why they did not make the shifter like every other bike in the known universe with splines on the lever instead of incorporating a sleeve and then the lever- poor engineering on that one....

Well, the shifter is like every other shifter, they just added a fully adjustable sleeve to it! You can replace it with other sportster/Buell shifters. I'd just tap the lever and add a set screw. Properly adjusted and not abused they work just fine.
