1.75 qts for a regular engine oil and filter change. Exactly 1 quart for trans. ONLY synthetic engine oil can be used in the trans. To that effect I would use the same synthetic oil in the engine and transmission. Keeps things simple. However, I use Redline synthetic engine oil and specific transmission oil in mine, so I cant speak to your other question on which shifts better |

Use the above bars. Would you really use bicycle bars on a motorcycle? I know I wouldn't. |

Bicycle bars are usually thinner steel and could break. |

In hospital - lady decided to make a left, saw me coming, froze, had to lay it down into her rear tire at 40 mph- bike - my Blast - totaled. I am soooo pissed and sore. Hip, foot and knee trauma-will know more in quick time, after seeing another Dr., all softball size - sigh. Geez - I don't know if I can Build another bike as nice as what I had built that Blast out to be- that royally sucks. Gear and a good Aki fall saved the bacon for the most part- the lady was definitely at fault. The Dulluth firehose jeans saved my lower half nicely - practically no skin abrasions. The buffalo leather jacket and gloves slightly scuffed but still usable, and helmet did it's job well, looks hardly touched but will be replaced. Will be off boards next few days to get stuff straightened out. EZ |

EZ, So sorry to hear! Glad you're mostly unscathed. Heal up soon, my friend. You can always build up another Blast. It'll never be the same as your lost baby but she'll have her own personality to look forward to. Regards, Nels |

Bummer about your bike's outcome but glad it was totaled and not you. Maybe you can salvage some of the pieces to use in the replacement project. Here's to a speedy recovery. |

Gosh I stay away from the board for too long, sneak back in for a peak and see your post EZ - I am truly sorry to hear this. My Monday had nearly the same start - was at a red light and when green came the car on the other side jumped the green and turned left in front of us (my husband rides left front, me right/behind) Even though she knew we were there, going straight, she hit the gas and maneuvered left looking right at us, then froze mid turn, luckily we were already taking evasive action and we HAD the room to break, swerve left and miss her, all the while loudly proclaiming what an idiot she was. My heart goes out to you EZ, get well soon. |

Hi, I'm new here. I just got a 2000 blast with 3, 500 miles on it. Its been very well taken care of. The guy I got it from said he went to start it after it sat in his garage for about 6 months. It started and ran for maybe a minute than slowly puttered out. Thats what I'm getting now that I got it home. After it does that, it runs shorter each time I start it till finally it wont start at all. Then if I let it sit for a couple hrs it fires right back up, runs great for a min than slowly chugs to halt again. Took off the tank enptied the gas put new in. Spark is good. Read about the "boot" it looks BRAND NEW. Spayed carb cleaner around the boot as it was running,no change. Frustrated |

First: DO NOT TAKE THE CARB APART TO "GIVE IT A GOOD CLEANING". It wont solve your problem and in many, many cases just causes new problems. Have you ridden it? It sounds as if the "choke" is stuck on. It can be ridden with the choke stuck on, but will slowly die at idle. Letting a bike idle to warm up is not a good idea, despite what many people think. The plug may also be fouling out if the choke is stuck on at idle. Even though it only has 3500 miles, a 13 year old plug should be changed BUT: can you ride it when it starts? I wouldnt change the plug if that is the case. In fact I wouldnt change anything until you can further diagnose the problem. The Carb: The part of the carb that usually gets clogged from sitting is the slow jet. That part should be considered replacing with a #45 slow jet (but dont clean the carb-just replace the jet). Trying to clean it is a waste of time and they are only $6-$10 and is a stock jet on carb'd Harleys (late models), so it easily available from the dealer. How is the oil? The Blast takes 2.5 quarts maximum and only takes a little more than 1.5 quarts with an oil and filter change. When a Blast has been sitting for a while (a week is long enough or less) it will show empty and you'll see nothing in the frame. Start it and warm it up and it will show full (not idle warm, but running warm). To that end many people will add oil to a full Blast. To complicate matters, between the lines on the dipstick is only about 8 ounces. Popular belief is that its a quart between lines on any dipstick and Blasts regularly get overfilled until the mistake is realized. Try removing (or cracking) the gas cap. A bike that has been sitting can have a clogged gas tank vent and it will do exactly what you described (but usually its takes a little longer to die). Is it a Blast from California? Did the owner say why he stopped riding it? (did it already have a problem?) Are there any modifications done to the bike? Changing the exhaust is very common. A loud non stock exhaust is an indication that other things may have been altered. Those are the places I'd start. There are other issues to consider, but start there. You'll also need to be sure (as soon as its road worthy) that the rear sprocket recall has been done. Lastly: Welcome to Badweb! |

Thanks for responding. I had the gas cap off while it was running and felt no suction when I put my hand over it. Is that what I should be looking for? If so where is the vent? |

No I cant ride it. When it starts it wont take the slightest bit of gas I tried feathering up the throttle but it wont take a bit of it. Plug isnt fouled I took it out and checked it. Yes he had this problem when I got it. Its my 66 yr old uncle who has been riding and racing bikes for 30 or so yrs. He gave it to me, hedoesnt feel like fooling with it lol cant blame him at his age. The oil is fine. He got it from a woman who took great care of it. He put a vance and hines exhaust on it but no further mods. Not sure if the carb was jetted after but he rode it for a yr after and im assuming he would know to do that. Ill have to ask to make sure. Seems like a cool little bike though |
