Long story short. I use my Blast for commuting 90 freeway miles a day. A few months ago, I swapped in a Sportster 1200 engine primary sprocket and chain to lengthen the gearing for freeway. As part of this, I had to remove the plastic shield on the top inside of the primary cover. Since the XB12 doesn't have it, I figured it must be OK. Wrong, the primary chain has worn a hole in the primary cover by one of the screws that hold it on. I'm now faced with either going back to the smaller pulley and replacing the primary cover with another Blast one, or installing the whole setup from an XB12. Anyone ever run an XB12 primary cover on a Blast? Primary tensioner setup is better or worse? I really want to keep my new gearing! |

Use the XB12 stuff, top hole mismatch - apply a little sealer there, use the XB tensioner set up - can now make rearsets easily for bike using xb shifter. Buellistic - an esteemed member of BADWEB did this. EZ |

"i" was told that the XB primary cover would not fit the BLAST as a replacement RETRO FIT COVER by the HARLEY-DAVIDSON Parts !!! WELL, MIND WORKS JUST FINE AND THERE SHOULD BE SOME PICTURES SOME WHERE ON THE THUMPer Forum ... The long allen screw is not used and there is one screw hole in the XB Cover that has no screw hole in the BLAST left case so "i" cut off a screw and used JB WELD to hold it in the cover ... It is not necessary to up-date to a XB Cover as it is possible to adjust the BLAST Primary Chain correctly(NOT USING THE FACTORY METHOD WHICH IS BUELLschitte)even though you can not see or feel the primary chain to find the chain tight spot ... Also went to the 35T XB12 front motor sprocket as "i" also ride on the Inter State Highways ... (Message edited by buellistic on April 04, 2013) |

Are you saying I ran the chain too tight? I don't think so, I didn't adjust per the manual. It was two or three flats looser than the manual calls for. Did you have the plastic guide in the upper part of the primary cover still? Mine was rubbing badly, so I removed it. I'm thinking about JB welding the hole, shaving down the guide a little and trying to reinstall like that before I spend money for the XB12 setup. |

14 more flats out would be much better considering how too tight the factory recommendation is. EZ |

The CORRECT Primary Chain Adjustment is 3/4 inch loose on the CHAIN TIGHT SPOT ... If you can not find the TIGHT SPOT, you are just wasting your time ... PRIMARY CHAIN ADJUSTMENT Class 101, just PM me for a copy ... Ezblast if you want a copy to review and post on THUMPer Forum, just PM me ... |

Having in hand an XB cover, I can now confirm that the Blast cover will NOT work with the big front primary sprocket. The mismatched hole on the top is made to clear the longer primary chain, and that is the EXACT hole it rubbed through at. Adjustment of the primary chain not withstanding, I sourced an XB cover and will convert to that. |
