Ok so I'm sure that one of you guy's have had to do this. I have a 06 that I have to pull the primary drive off to access the countershaft retainer screw. Which fell off some how.. (It is a thumper) So as much as I would love to pay the dealership to do this. I'm open to tackling it myself. So can I remove the primary drive without having to take the clutch apart? And if so what tools would one need to do this? I have the shop manual but I'm not sure what to do. So I'm here looking for suggestions or advise. Thanks guys. |

First open your primary cover, then inspect - that will better tell you what is next - take it all the way down - two large nuts - and you'll see whats wrong and able to inspect other things as well - while your there type things to do as well also. Pictures are good. EZ |

I'm to the I know what's wrong phase of this. I just want to take the whole primary drive off (clutch pack, chain the whole 9 yards) so I can get to where this torx screw goes. In the service manual on page "6-18" in figure "6-24" (4. torx screw) you can see where I need to get to. So on page "6-12" it covers removing the primary drive unit as a whole. It says to install SPROCKET LOCKING LINK (part #hd-38362) and so on... Well I hate to say it but it's kinda looking like me not having this part and not having the two claw puller means I might be better off having a shop do this. But if you guys have done this without said tools and parts let me know? Should look like this when pulled. http://www.buellsterparts.com/product.sc?productId =487&categoryId=5 (Message edited by apecore12 on November 15, 2012) |

Never used either tool, just used a 4 1/2" piece of steel. http://buellridersonline.com/forum/stock/18-shifte r-pawl-adjustment.html EZ |

Yeah I cut a piece of wood to fit and I used a 3 claw puller for a steering wheel instead of the 2 claw the manual called for. But it all came out easyish and now that torx is back into place. For the life of me can't figure out how this screw came out on an engine with only 1456. It must have been loose from the factory. Pulling the primary on these bikes is crazy easy compared the other harleys I've worked on. I guess it had me lil intimidated. Seeing as I've never had to wrench really hard on my old P3. Thank EZ for your responses. |
