i bought my 02 blast about a month ago and it came with a vance and hanes exhaust, everything else was stock. a day ago i rejetted at 48 and 175 and shimmed the needle, i thought by .05 but i just measured another shim and its .025. did the EZ intake mod, K&N filter, and a IXU01-27 5731 denso racing plug, running regular gas (which im seeing now is not good lol). at work i have a A/F exhaust sniffer that i used to adjust the idle mixture screw, which the bike had been ridden to warm it up beforehand. on the initial test ride it felt a little sluggish, when i adjusted the idle screw and took it back out it felt better, but in the middle of the rpm range with maybe 30-40% throttle it felt like it started to run lean. i could hear a bit of pinging and the bike would surge power a bit. power felt good throughout the range with 70% throttle and up and had noticeable power gain at low rpm with heavy throttle. what direction should i go to fine tune everything? |

so i added the other shim and its still surging around mid rpm just cruising. less pinging noise though it still feels like a fuel shortage problem. what next? i was gonna try better fuel |

so i put 93 gas in it yesterday and it is feeling even better but i feel like im masking the problem because the surge is still there just a bit. may the boot be ripped causing a bit of a vacuum leak? |

A small pinhole in the boot would allow extra air into the mixture at cruising throttle position, making the bike run lean. I would remove it, and check it for pinholes/tears, as a first step. |

so i changed the boot a couple weeks ago and it made a world of difference. the only thing is there is still a bit of a surge at around 75 may a bit before when hot. i made sure i put the carb together right. would attaching the horn shaped plastic with the new intake diameter back on the air box to eliminate air turbulence or my exhaust isn't as free flowing as i thought and i've heard about "punching" it out to increase flow but i'm not quite sure about the process. |
