Alright, recently acquired my friends 03 Blast. It already has the carb jetted and the Jardine pipe on it, and it's still too doggy for me, lol. So, I've been browsing around, looking for things that I can do to get what I can out of this bike. Big thing I want to do is the 515 bolt on, which shouldn't be a bad winter project. One question on that for anybody who has done it, is the stock Buell head still used, or do I have to get a new head (same with cam, push rod, valves etc) Just looking for affordability. Next thing I was wondering, for the engine as it is now, is there a better carb out there I could put on it. Looking back at the other bikes I've had over the year, this one just seems small for a 500... |

The 515 by Revolution Performance is totally worth the few bucks more, no head work needed. The Mikuni HSR 42 Spigot could work well, but is pricey - almost the price of an FI kit. The CV 40 can be tuned for a lot more response, a lot less expensively, and can handle 100hp easily, with a ceiling of around 120. After that some would go to the Kiehin cv44 for power and hd for the track - would not recommend street at all - used a 52 - 54mm cv Kiehin spigot carb on their racing flattrackers and that kit went with XR head and jug and pistion, and exhaust - with custom cranks - lol EZ |

Yeah, the Rev doesn't need the head work, and I didn't think that the NRHS one needed them either...but considering I was already planning on sending them my head for reporting and everything, the NRHS ends up being a grand cheaper. But...neither of these companies really show any specs that I can find, so I'm clueless to what I'm actually getting from it, lol. And on that same note, it's hard enough to find a vid of somebody starting up the 515, let alone riding one =/ |

use hammerperf for your headwork. they used to do all the work for nrhs. they key with the big bore setups isnt just one thing its everything working together. the XB head is the best head to start with. and even better ported with bigger valves the 515' kit doesnt give enough displacement to warrant its price. but add higher compression and matched squishband and were talking some good gains, the cam will also make a difference depending on how you ride, and will really determine how radical you need to go with your head setup. end of the day your looking at spending at least 2 grand to do it right. if your not in love with the blast dont waste your time or money. |

Look at cams, the stock cams are the weak link on the Blast, you could probably put 700 cc's on top of the stock Blast cams and still only get 30 hp...joking of course, but the stock cams are designed for low hp, low torque so no one got hurt during the riders edge classes. No suprises, and you really have to work to get the front wheel off the ground, just what a bunch of H-D want to be bikers needed to get their cycle endorsement. Me thinks...not having done it my self(on a Blast), I would be installing different cams and making the corresponding head modifications to make the cams fit. What cams you ask? It all depends on what you want to do with it, it all depends on lift, duration, overlap and indexing... |

As said cams will help a lot if you are doing the NRHS 515 kit and stage 2 headwork. Redshift does a really nice grind with their 567 that works really well with this kit. As for Hammer used to do our headwork. that is correct. There is a reason they USED to do it and no longer do. |
