Hi, Just bought an '02 blast last week for my wife to learn on. Fun bike, both of us love it, but only got in two tutorials with her, when I asked to use it for my commute to work (my shadow needing some maintenance I've been too lazy to get around to). I borrowed the bike and on my ride home the 10 inches or so of exhaust pipe between the flange and the muffler fell off. So, long story short, I bought my wife a present, then broke it. And I need to fix it fast to get out of the dog house. Asking around the local bike shops, and no one can source a replacement exhaust. The local muffler shop says they can't do anything for bike exhausts as their machines can't work with pipe smaller than 1 1/2 in. Internet searches only turn up expensive ($250+++) performance kits - when really I just want something that will make it quiet enough to maintain good relations with the neighbors (and to get my patient wife back on two wheels). So my question, oh Thumper gurus, is what it my most affordable option to get this fun little bike running quietly again? Thanks from Toronto. -Joel |

I had the pipe break on me while i was riding above the canister and i just rewelded it back together. Granted it broke off eventually again and i just removed it but on the cheap. re-weld. if you have some time and patience you should be able to weld on some extra pipe to make it longer to the back or look for a sportster front exhaust and it should fit as well. |

Pipe is larger than that - tell them 1 3/4" will be fine - jet to 45/175. EZ |

Yeah, it looks like this had been welded at some point too, maybe why the whole pipe fell off, instead of just a hole. So will a sporty front pipe just bolt right on? Any particular years? I like this option as it is something I can likely find used and cheap around here, but I'm skeptical that it would line up correctly under the bike... I don't want to get in to rejetting the carb just now - really looking to get my wife some practice in before her course later this month. I think I'll try another muffler shop, as maybe the first guy just doesn't like bikes. Thanks for the info! |

yes, try to stay near the year of the bike - try to use as much of the stock hardware as you can to mount, a p-clamp for pipe is useful. EZ |

The MSF course assumes no previous riding knowledge - she's fine not having ridden before it (and some would argue better off). You should be able to find a stock can from someone around here, but they do tend to break their exhaust systems quite reliably. That's one of the reasons I've got a Jardine on mine. |

I've got a stock system I'll be taking off soon, but can't guarantee when, and I have no clue how much it would cost to ship the muffler/pipe (it's pretty heavy and bulky!) Let us know when you find an exhaust. If you don't find a solution in the next week or so (and I pull it off to start my custom exhaust) we might be able to work something out! -Brad |
