OK, Thought I'd start a new thread, figuring this way I won't clog up the Success Story thread =) Some background on my bike: 2002 Blast with about 9,400 mi. 1) won't start easily. 2) when I do get it started (after million tries!), idles low and dies. Sometimes when I give gas, dies. 3) loses power or dies while riding. 4) backfires. 5) sometimes pop noise from airbox (carb side). I think that's about it. OK, so now I have a new DasBoot! (thanks, Sycho!) And supposedly a "rebuilt" clean carburetor (more on that later). But I continue to have ALL the problems described above =( I just disconnected the EPA canister. Haven't taken out on the road since disconnecting the canister, but here's a video of what my carb does when given throttle. Is this normal? You'll see it spit out around 00:20, 00:26, 00:50. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw0WzNbSCU8&feature=youtu.be I'm going to drain the gas tank and put fresh gas in tomorrow. Do I even need to do this? I've filled it TWICE since having purchased the bike last month. Of course I don't know how long the previous owner let the bike sit in garage, but she's only put 200mi. on it within a year. Prior to that I have no history of the bike. Now just to vent... I took my bike to a shop and after they holding on to it for a week (after having told me that they'll have it outta there that day), and supposedly having "fixed" the problem (they put on the DasBoot! which I provided to them 'cause they couldn't find the part; and cleaned the carburetor), the bike came back with SAME problems! And to make matters worse, this is how they left the bolts holding the airbox in place:
Needless to say I'll NEVER go back to Parts Unlimited in Stanton. Nor will I let ANYONE else touch my bike. .....except maybe some fellow Balsters. Thanks for reading =) |

Q: here's a photo of my airbox on right side. Is this hole normal? Wouldn't it let debris and stuff get into the carb?

the hose for the crankcase vent should go through that hole. and WOAH that bolt in the carb at 11 o clock.... there's part of your problem that should be a hole its a vent to the bowl of the carb (Message edited by STYXNPICKS on May 13, 2012) |

WHAT?!?!?!? Glad I posted the picture. So I'll remove that bolt if I can. I just looked, and it looks pretty stripped. Also, uhhh... what's hose for the crankcase vent? Thank you for the help! |

Only thing worse than a dealer working on your Blast is a non-dealer. They know even less. Sorry, I thought you took it to Fullerton HD. First. If you disconnected the EPA canister properly IT WILL STILL have symptoms for a short while. Although it should be a magic fix, its not as the carb has to work all the fuel out thats in the wrong places. So besides removing that 'extra' bolt (they obviously havent worked on too many Harleys either), you may have to run the bike for 5 minutes or more to get everything sorted out to where you'll know exactly whats wrong. Take it easy. Dont rush. There's nothing so wrong with your Blast that it cant be fixed, but running "willy nilly" at it will only further frustration and problems. Unfortunately I just dont have the time right now or I'd just fix it for you (which shouldnt take long). First remove the extra bolt. Verify that you plugged the fat line going to the EPA canister. Plugged the small hose (marked "carb" on the canister). And left the hose (marked "tank" on the canister) open to the air. Looks as if some hoses have already been removed so further attention may be needed, but the end result is still very simple. Leaving the gas cap loose or off may relieve some of your problems. But DONT ride your Blast that way and be very careful if you've filled the tank. I'm also pretty sure those are the wrong bolts for the air cleaner so please dont force them in. I'm pretty sure you're wasting your time draining the gas. You still have your original problems, so lets solve them first. And please, please, please, dont take the carb apart, for any reason. If your Blast ends up running okay enough for you to ride it, you can bring it over to my house and I'll take a look at it (time allowing). I'm 5 miles away. |

Well, if the bike will run with the bolt in, put it back, gently. How did you get the bike home? Did they even test ride it after they fixed it? (sorry, all the video tells me is it doesnt start.) Sadly, I just rode within a block of where (I think) you live about an hour ago |

Thank you Gearhead. I won't drain the gas. Will recheck the EPA disconnect setup and try again tomorrow. I'm sure I capped the Big line & carb line. And left the tank line open. They "said" they took it out for test ride; but they have no credibility with me what so ever. Sad... |

Removed the extra bolt. Ran the crankcase vent hose through that hole (just to plug up the hole) and capped it (the manual says to plug it onto one of the bolts holding the carb, but my bolt doesn't stick out like in the manual diagram). Still couldn't start the bike. Eventually the battery died, so I hooked it up to my car and miraculously got it started after few tries. Took it out for a ride and the bike was doing much better. That was Sunday. I wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke before I updated you guys. The last two nights I was able to start the bike at FIRST Try. And took it out last night for roughly 25mi. ride, and no backfiring, no loss of power, no stalling; NONE of the issues I had before! Hallelujah! Thank you, everyone! Looking forward to logging on some ride miles. |

PS and for anybody else reading: please post your problems in one thread only. It drives those of us trying to help crazy, trying to keep threads and posters straight, thinking we're posting to one, but instead posting to another and then I think I'm going nuts because I was sure I posted a response and now it's gone (on a different thread).I only have a few marbles left! |
