Rear pully, belt, and yes, new bolts - all part of the procedure and then you can dog that puppy for another 15,000! Better safe than sorry!

Finally! Got the wife on the Red bike! Practiced controls, friction zones, braking, and turning from a stop. So far so good! I think the thing that finally got her was the great time I had at the Freedom Ride/ Kansas concert! Her goal is now to make the next SLO ride! We practiced at the hospitals rear loading area - closed sundays;0) - after a few weeks of parking lot basics, she'll be ready to get her learner's permit, and practice on our back streets - our very curvy back streets;0) - A goal realized! I'm digging out my MSF course books for her as I type - lol - her schedule just doesn't allow for taking the course - God knows I've tried, so its the old fashioned way for her, however, she does have old dirt riding skills, so at least bikes are'nt a total mystery to her. Woohoo - the first hurdle overcome! Now to take it slow and easy - no drops so far and I hope to keep it that way! Let the fun begin!

I'd like to have 5 minutes alone behind closed doors with these Buell engineers. Tried to follow your directions with adding springs to Pro Series carb set-up. Thought I had it dialed in when the intake boot tore in half right between both hose clamps, stranding my son along the road. HD customer relations says, "we don't have any complaints or problems with Pro Series carb...but we will refund your money on the kit if you'd like to return it". Hmmmm. Is there anyone else out there selling a better supported air cleaner set up that rids the bike of that 15 pound chunk of plastic?

If the boot is clamped on crossing over the lip crooked - it will tear almost at once - like that - personal experience - lol - the springs have to be pretty firm also with the same amount of tension on each side. The boots are cheap, and even the reds first lasted over a 1000 miles - so I'd try again. Also remember if the Kid is clamping the tank with his knees then he is flexing the intake boot/tearing it - takes getting used to - I went through a couple of boots learning not to do that - lol

EZ, Congrats on getting the wife on two wheels. My wife is riding with me now on short rides. I'm still trying to get her to build up he stamina. BTW, I got her a Burgman 650 and it totally smokes the Blast in a straight line.

LPD22,

I talked with Henry Dugga about the intake, and he was kind of concerned about the intake, but I really haven't had a problem with mine. I have almost 10,000 miles on mine with no suppots, and no problems so far. In fact, I had 18+K on the first intake boot (with the stock intake), and 10,000 on the "new" boot that I put on with the Pro-series. It is fairly critical on how much you tighten the boot, and to try and not squeeze it with youe knees while you're riding.

Yeah - I've checked out the Burgman - lol - still - I'll stick to teaching on the Blast - cheap parts and easy to fix after a drop and she's bound to have fun on it since her idea of fun in a car is the curvey parts - lol - good to see ya on the boards James! Hows your bike treating you?

EZ and James, Thanks for the info. When I removed the boot today, it was torn in three places. Under both hose clamps and on the outside middle which would support the kid squeezing the filter with his knees and overtightening the clamps. I'll try again.
I contacted Buell customer service today and spoke with some beligerent female "Kathy", that not only was of no help, she would not talk with me, but kept interrupting and saying deal with your dealer. (And it was my dime too)
As corny as it may sound, without this website and your individual input and wisdom the bike would be on the front lawn. So thanks again.

There has got to be an alternative for the stock boot. I posted a thread asking about a stainless braided boot. I'm wondering if also something can be made using that fiber reinforced silicon rubber hoses that are used for automotive applications. I'm still looking.

Racers use the fuel fill line for race car gas tanks (heavy duty and fiber reinforced). Same size id can be found. I was willing to do this, and may still if nothing else works, however, if I did, I would also upgrade the clamps to ones that don't back out - the Breeze industrial (same folks that make our current clamp). The problem though for the long term is not durability - such an item would last indefinately, the problem with running this on a street bike is the fact that fuel will build up in the coupling - creating a weird on/off transient rich /lean conditions that you don't get on the track because of all the bouncing around and such, that won't happen on a long straight stretch of highway. For this reason and because there is no positive hold on the hose by itself - unlike the intake coupling - such a set up would not be recommended or honored in a warrentee situation (another words finding a set up like that on the bike would void it), however, if your warrentee is up, it then becomes more of a personal choice. I also have been flipping a coin on this since both my bikes are now past warrentee and it is all on me, however, I'm still long term working with the stock intake boots, and have hopes that Buell is beta testing some improved version (have heard such). Still - I was thinking - you could fit some of the hose inside the hose (cut and glue) to act as positive stops for the carb and intake spigots and prevent fuel build up, but since I have'nt gone there yet, its still speculation. Yeah that boot is a frustrating week link when modifying the intake.

That hose within a hose is an interesting idea...I never thought of that. I wonder if they could even just change the compound of the plastic/rubber to make it a bit more rigid?

Rigidity isn't needed so much as durability - if they where to pay to have the coupling reinforced like the fuel hose we are talking about - the problem would be non existant, or use a stronger urathane...

The oil drain is a plugged rubber hose bolted to the left hand passenger footpeg which, BTW, you will be removing to refill the transmission that you just drained.

I like the new color. Maybe I'll go to it when I finally change out my bodywork.

EZ, the bike's been fine. I'm flogging it around as usual. I just hit 27,000 miles today! I've got another bike to work on right now, a 1994 ATK 605. When it's up and running I might take the Blast apart and do some motor work.

Yes - one is your oil drain, and the other is a drain hose for pcv valve - both are drained during oil change - lol

Did you get your transmission oil back in?
I was wondering about just tipping the bike on its side and putting the oil back in the hole it came out of. Anybody try that yet? It would sure make the primary change fast!

Jprovo:

FUNNY!~

Today I test drove another Sporty 95, 1200, low cruiser style, nice bike, custom wheels, when I got it up to 60-65 and rolled it on it felt like the back end slid out like a flat tire! It was bad enough that my foot came off the peg! SPOOKY! The tire didn't break loose, it just felt like a flat tire but it felt the same way after filling the tires up. Whats the consensus?
I was thinking wheel bearings, I probably should have checked the axle nut but it had axle covers.

Well, once I noticed that it wasn't oil, I plugged it quick, so I didn't loose too much... I'm checking the level to make sure I didn't loose to much and will probably have to do the fill procedures... I printed out the steps off of bcrider.com, but I still need to go by a dealer and get some fluid... maybe I will get a friend or 2 to come over and try tipping it...

Well, I know I have not posted much lately. I ended up taking a different job that involves a lot of travel. So, I have not really been using the smaller Blast. And although I love the bike, if I am not using it, I don't see any big reason to keep it. So I have listed it in the classified section. It is in good shape, and y'all have been great here, so I thought I would list it here first.....

I added a link at the bottom of the header list in the Thumper picture section - very easy to use, its free, and it can edit your pics to bring them down to that max 72k we have, and edit to turn into jpg/gif as well. It does other edit functions as well. Hope this helps that eternal problem of not being able to post pictures - with just a few minutes effort your set to post!
Enjoy!

Greetings all...
Tomorrow morning A buddy and I head to Queens NY to pick up a Blast... used 2003 w/<400 miles... if you're headed north from NY to Maine tomorrow, wave... we might not see you, but we'll be a vw jetta tdi and a buell on 684-84-90-495-95....I've been browsing the bbs for a few days... have printed off most of the service manual... have a 5 gal can of gas in the trunk... a few tools... we plan on doing an oil change part way up, conditions permitting...

I am a mc newbie, but I'm also 45, so I'm no rookie and have tracked a few cars and had driving schools... I'm starting with a blast and will get my bike legs with something easy to handle and learn on.. I assume I'll sell it next year sometime and move on to a larger bike, once I know enough to actually decide what I want...

cheers
