I seem to have come up with a good simple way to remove the timer cover without drilling or prying the cover off. I took a wire coat hanger because the suitable hardness of the wire and twisted them together and then bent out each wire so the length fit the diameter of the cover. The with some good ol fashioned duct tape taped it to the timer cover. This provided a nice distributed force over the cover and i gave it a yank and it came out without too much damage to the tabs. Just thought I would share! I will let you know how it holds up to reuse.  | ||

Go to Buell Parts. They have a original OEM timing cover or just get a plain chrome timing cover from an older sportster than you can re-use. The mounting hardware is pretty common #8-32 x 1/2 I believe. It is readily available at Lowes etc. They even sell stainless button caps if you choose | ||

1970-1999 Big Twin or Sportster (or Buell) covers fit. They are often sold with the gasket and screws. | ||

I have pulled the timing cover off twice and installed it back in twice and so far so good. Although when I examined it, it appears as if someone (previous owner perhaps or a monkey handed service tech) had broken one of the 3 tabs off and filed it down. Anyone tried this method with all of the tabs in tact? I would imagine it wont damage the tabs too much. | ||

So I decided to get a chrome timer cover rather than risk it falling off event though it seems to install fine. The screws it came with however, don't fit in the threaded top portion of the ignition module screws. Anyone know the size of the correct screws? | ||

Take a module hold down screw with you. Typical that the cover didn't come with the right screws. They should all be the same (but I don't have the specs). Welcome to the world of aftermarket Harley parts!!  | ||

Wild guess or pure Genius or the a Harley parts guy visited me in a dream or he maybe told me at the parts counter but I picked up a #8-32 x 1/2 button cap screw that happened to be the right one. | ||
