Team, I am working on a friends 2000 Buell Blast P3 that has not ran in a few years & he wanted to get it going again.. Ive never worked on one of these before, but have worked on countless dirtbikes, quads etc for years now... Usually japanese stuff. Anyway; We did the basics.. Cleaned the whole bike up, disassembled & cleaned carb, new air filter, oil filter, spark plug, fresh battery etc.. I ran into a strange issue when changing the oil and I cannot seem to find a straight answer anywhere on the web and I have never ran into this before !! Figuring out which drain plug to pull was one thing. I pulled the strange nut/bolt/C-spacer thats closest to the front of the bike on the case. Oil came out, but I used one of those black containers, and wasnt staring at it, so Im not really sure how much drained. The dipstick was barely registering oil on the tip before we started, so it was definately low. I filled the oil by the gas tank with 2 qts of 20/50 oil. Overnight, the drain bolt was seeping, so I tried to snug it with no luck- still seeping, figured Id have to drain the new oil & check the gasket. Put a clean container under the front bolt, loosen it & barely anything comes out.. With plug out, oil is barely coming out when I have 2 full qts up top @ the dipstick. Now, Im thinking I may have pulled the transmission drain plug by accident, but everywhere I look says the trans drain plug is the one under the left foot peg, closer to the back of the motor !! I did not want to pull this plug to check because I didnt have any trans fluid & was not prepared to replace it. Can anyone tell me 100% that the motor oil drain plug is closest to the front of the motor? Can anyone tell me 100% that the tranny drain plug is closer towards the back of the motor near the footpeg?? Can anyone tell me why no motor oil came out from the front drain plug if thats the correct one? Ive also read something about pulling 2 hose plugs near the swingarm to drain the oil? I don't recall seeing anything like that. Im just trying to help a friend and didn't expect to run into a baffling issue with something so simple as draining oil, but its not something you can just take a stab at & hope youre right- I dont wish to ruin this poor kids motorcycle. Any information is greatly appreciated. |

Alright... Well, after trying a few different ways of searching your forums, I think I found my answer. The bolt I removed was actually the primary chain adjuster. Tranny fluid drained out. Wouldnt matter if I pulled the front bolt or the rear bolt, tranny fluid was coming out either way. Fortunately, the chain adjuster bolt had a small C spacer installed, so I was able to put it back at the exact spot it came out. Guess I gotta refill the trans now & find the oil drain lines that are near the swingarm. Good times !! |

Ouch! Air cooled Buell engines are a dry sump and do not have a drain plug. You are correct that you drained the transmission fluid. You will want to refill the transmission with a full synthetic 20W-50 engine oil of your choice. Do not use any type of gear oil as the ingredients have been known to eat the charging stator windings. Good luck, welcome to the Thumper Forum! |

well, when I change my oil on the blast, i pull the black plugs off the 2 hoses that are hanging by the left rear footpeg/swimgarm area underneath,,,one drains the oil, the other is just a little bit of water/ white stuff, actually condensation that drains out.....put plugs back in, change oil filter on other side by oil pump.....add 2 qts oil at top of frame at dipstick hole...done |

OMG! where to start. Get a repair manual, asap. No offense, but its obvious you havent worked on many (any?) Harley's. I've seen so many things wrong with the one post that it really scares me that you will screw up this poor kids bike. I'm sure you a fine mechanic, but at this point you're in way over your head without a repair manual. Seriously, and I dont mean to offend. FWW: filling it with 2 quarts will put the engine at overfill. You start at 1 1/2 qts and get it hot then re check it. You might (might) have to add 1/4 quart to make it absoloutely full, but its not necessary. Between the dipstick lines is not 1 quart. It is more like 8 ounces. Add very little at a time. |

Thanks for the information. No offense taken. I'm not going to buy a manual for a bike that I'm never gonna see again in 2 days. I got that advice from every other post I searched. If I owned one, I definitely would. But a quick simple question that can be answered in 2 seconds by an experienced buell owner doesn't warrant that. That's what a forum is for. Thanks for the information, I'm heading in the right direction. I'll be sure to turn down anymore Harleys that come my way! |

I know how you feel. After years of experience with Buell's and Kawasaki's, somebody brought me a 97 Yamaha Virago to work on. What a mess. Somebody should have been sent back to the piano division. |

Well, your fiend is going to need the manual to refix his bike. So, have him but the manual. Based on your post, he will have to: 1. Redo the primary adjustment. (The C spacer should have been removed after 1,000 miles at the first maintenance) 2. Make sure the oil has not been over filled (the bike is checked hot bc of the dry sump, the oil drain plug is one of the hoses attached to the left peg mount) 3. Replace the Carb Boot. 4. Have a detailed list of what was done, so we can help him diagnose what was actually done and what needs to be done to fix the bike. Sorry to come off as an _ _ _, but HDs are a different critter then Jap bikes. |

as a added note: replace all of your torx bolts and replace with socket heads. aka: allen heads. removes the problem bolts for good, and it just looks better. and next time you have to change the trani oil no need to move the foot peg. just have a "special" allen wrench, short side cut shorter. good luck. .} |
