After a season of riding the 2003 Blast that my son picked up last year I'm concerned with the rate at which it seems to use oil. After only 200 miles or so it hits the add mark on the dipstick. And yes, that's checking it hot. The bike has around 4500 miles on it and we run Mobil 1 10W40. He's a good rider and neither lugs it nor over revs it. It does not smoke noticeably at start up or when I follow him down the road. It doesn't leak or blow oil anywhere. Is this a problem for for this engine? If anyone has any good info I'd appreciate a response.

Thats about right for some Blasts, my 2001 was like that, my 2000 - less so.
Its a HD motor, it will consume oil - sigh

I might suggest a 20W-50 full synthetic of your choice...

Concur! 10w-40 is too thin, unless its the middle of a cold winter. FWIW: 10w-40 is too thin for most any HD product. Even the tightest engines will use it up (at an alarming rate too).

You can curb oil use by rerouting the PCV hose from pointing directly into the carb or reroute it out of the airbox completely. That could make a huge difference.Redoing the top end can get oil consumption done to almost zero, so its possible. But as EZ wrote, some are just 'users'.

That's about what ours burns. I just check it after every ride, and if it's a long ride, check at every fillup.

They just use oil, and they don't have much of it to begin with, so the 8oz range on the dipstick goes quickly.

Definitely try 20W50. If you can get 300 miles per 8oz, that's about 1200 miles/qt, which is a perfectly sane burn rate.

I have a hard time swallowing the "they just use oil" line. The only other HD product I have any experience with would be the engine in my M2, and it doesn't use a drop of oil. This is the only Blast I have been around, so I will defer to experienced Blasters. We will run Mobil 1 15W50 this spring and see what happens. Thanks all for the responses.

To reiterate, there is a huge difference in oil usage between 10w-40 and 20w-50. I own quite a few HD products and oil weight is very important.
