Hey guys, I'm new to the Blast, and riding in general (just got my license on the 9th). I spent my first weekend riding the Blast with my stepfather, about 400 miles over the weekend. I rode it 100 miles to my house from my mom's where it was in storage. I was doing 100-150 miles a day on it through Wednesday. I started hearing an occasional odd noise... like a hollow, metallic, grinding/rattling noise. I thought it might be the exhaust. I rode it a bit on Thursday, but the sound got more persistent and louder. Friday I changed the oil. I rode it a bit to warm it up beforehand, and the noise wasn't noticeable at first, and not very bad when I stopped. After adding my oil, I rode it up and down the driveway, and it sounded worse. I topped off the oil and started scouring the bike with a flashlight (it was about 11pm). Then I finally saw it glaring out at me, and my heart sank. PIC 1, and PIC 2.

So after tracking down the part number, and calling ALL of the HD dealers in NC... I found out that only 2 dealers in the USA had the part in stock. I ordered it from PA, and it should be here Friday. I'm really hoping I can install it Friday night and get some riding in this weekend (my birthday is Sunday!).

What I really want to know is, how difficult is this repair? Can I just unbolt the broken one and bolt on the new one? Does it need to be torqued to a specific tension? Does anything special need to be done? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get back on two wheels. (Even if it's 45 degrees outside :P)}

Welcome to the Thumper Forum Edified!
Wow...obvious problem there!

You will need the two bolts and washers that hold the "Do Not Remove" bracket to the head. The bolts and washers are special bolts with a factory locking compound. I also use Red Hi-Temp Locktite when I install them. There is a special installation proceedure, I believe you tighten the bolts to 60 ft lbs and loosen one turn then retourque to 60 ft lbs.

I would check the front isolator over to make sure that is not torn also. What happens is it tears, and you are running metal to metal and finally the bracket breaks. There are pictures around here somewhere that shows what a good one and a bad one looks like.

Before installing the bracket bolts make sure they will be tight in the head otherwise you will be chasing broken bolts again and again. What happens is the bolt hole opens up and the bolts break off about 3/8 inch in the head, so screw the bolt in the head about half way and see if it wobbles in the hole, if it does, you will want to install a helicoil.
Good luck, let us know what you find.

Im guessing this is a normal problem for everyone then :/ Question, if you change the isolator it shouldnt break so how many miles or years should the isolator be changed?

When it goes bad or shows signs of imminent failure. Not a worthwhile maintenance job. It would be the same as changing the engine mounts in your car just cuz they're made of rubber.

If you do not correctly install it you are in for "IMMINENT FAILURE" !!!

The same applies for the "ISOLATOR" !!!
