My wife has a 2003 with the Kerker exhaust. It is just way too loud at highway speeds. It has the Buell pro series intake, and has been rejetted for the modifications. If I buy a stock exhaust will I have to change the jetting again, or will the difference be minimal, keeping in mind that we are going to keep the pro-series intake? Or would anybody have suggestions for a quieter can. I agree with others who've said that the Kerker header is really well done.

Thanks in advance

Why not just get some nice ear plugs. I have been wearing them to get rid of irritating wind noise (I have a 1/2 helmet). I find that with the earplugs, I can't hear the stock exhaust at all and have been wishing for a louder one so I could tell where my rpms are.

(edit) I just saw your 700 mi post and noticed you were apparantly already using earplugs. Was the exhaust still too loud with earplugs?!

Yeah we did have earplugs and when I was riding behind her and she got on the gas the sound really drills through the earplugs. I swear it was rattling my fillings. So I guess the consensus is that the stock is too quiet. I wonder if there is a happy medium? Even my wife who is riding (with ear plugs) atop the exhaust said that at some frequencies it was almost unbearable.

(Rejetting back?)You could try leaving the jetting as is, but I did the same thing a while back and the jetting was so rich on top end- that i couldn't reach top speed anymore....at least drop the mainjet back to 170 or better yet- drop it to 165 (with stock muffler). The slow speed/pilot jet can stay the same.
BTW- all performance mufflers are going to be Loud !

Ralph does your advice take into account the open airbox and k&n filter?

I figured all performance exhausts would be loud, so I think I may just try to find a more restrictive can and put it on the kerker header.

The exhaust is frickin loud!! I would rejet back to 170, it's a 10 min job, and will prevent plug fouling. You might want to try a muffler with a left side oulet. that will get more noise away from the rider, the people behind you, and the LEO on the side of the road!

BTW, congrats to your wife.

I guess my custom exhaust isn't so loud after all! I find it mostly bearable without earplugs, but I usually wear them. I did have someone tell me it sounds like a machine gun. See pictures in the picture section for ideas. The whole job cost me $90 plus a can of barbecue grill paint.

Johnny, yes my advice is for the open airbox/k&n filter. Thats why I said leave the pilot/slow speed jetting the same. And actually- IMHO, the only reason the factory went from a #165 to a #170 Mainjet OEM, was to try and cover the lean condition when the bike is running on the slow speed jet and needle. So when you richen the middle up- the high speed jetting doesn't NEED to be so rich. It was kinda like a Catch 22, they have to run the slow speed jet LEAN for the EPA, but cover any damage that may cause with a richer mainjet (hoping if the rider is running the bike harder, the topend richness saves the valves??)

Thanks for your advice...I just bought a stock system from ebay and will hopefully be installing it soon. I'll let you know what happens.
