Froggy - check the seal of the plugged vacuum line, do the WD40 test around intake to head area, but the hand test should have told you something - how is your exhaust seal - even and tight to spec? EZ |

Hello all...first-time poster. I just bought a 2001 Blast in December. It was mostly sitting during the winter. It runs great. Today was great weather in NY so I rode in to work. Stuck in deep traffic and I started seeing smoke come up from under the front fork! I tried to get closer to my office but the smoke increased, so I pulled over for a while and shut it down. After about 10 mins I started up again and got to a parking lot, but the smoke had started again. I am totally!!! new to this bike, and somewhat new to bikes in general. What should I be investigating when after work today?? Thanks much and ride safely! |

Sounds like an oil leak dripping onto your header. |

I'm sorry, but what is a header? I just had the oil changed at the local Harley place about 3 weeks ago, but it has been too cold for extended riding until today. Maybe the guy didn't tighten something all the way. I searched the forums some more and someone mentioned similar white smoke, possibly caused by leaving one's fuel petcock in ON position. Is that really true? As a matter of fact this morning I walked around the bike and eyeballed it for any obvious issues before riding, and DID actually give the fuel petcock a twist for the heck of it, returning it to the on position. Then I rode for about an hour to work...Maybe it wasn't fully flush/seated?? |

Header is the exhaust pipe coming out of your bike - probably a leaky rocker gasket - an early model problem for all HD products - if it is still smoking look into it. probably just oil spilled on the header burning off from the oil change. EZ |

Welcome! Petcock not likely to cause just smoke, fire maybe, but you'd smell the gasoline first (a rarity). You also wouldnt be the first to have had your oil changed and they put in too much (it only takes 1 1/2 qts an oil change). Keep us posted. |

Look for spillage near/under/by the oil dipstick at the front of the gas tank.... And Welcome to the Thumper Forum! |

-Hey all, been away from the board awhile, but I still enjoying being Blasted. Smoke coming from front? -Shop may have spilled a bit while filling. It goes onto the top of the engine and when it burns off, you'll only smell/see smoke when stopped. -Rocker box gasket -common on older models, and needed to be changed on my '07 -PCV- the sealant holding mine in failed. This allowed a bit of blowby to push oil onto the top of the rocker box. >also related, the clamp holding the vent hose to the PCV body was pretty weak and allowed seepage. Shine a flashlight onto the area on top of the (cool) engine just above where the exhaust pipe meets the cylinder. Look for oil. Clean off all of it that you can and then monitor for more leakage. If no more occurs, it was a spill during the service work. If it starts again, you should be able to derive a point source. ______________________ Firing order: 1 |

Thanks so much to all for the very helpful comments!! white smoke mostly occurred when at stoplights. But I did see a few occasional wisps while moving, too. Yesterday I rode home with no problems whatsoever, no smoke. There doesn't seem to be any oil leaking from the dipstick area. It SEEMS to my untrained eye that the leak was coming from a hose which extends down from a metal connection sticking up directly in front of the gas cap. (When I came back from work, there was a very small, clear-colored puddle -- no bigger than a credit card -- under that hose.) That rubber hose is not connected to anything -- I'm assuming it's some kind of release valve? Anyway, thanks again to you all, that is goooood stuff! now I feel I have several approaches to check out this weekend. I'm gonna look in the shop manual I ordered online. If I have further problems I'll be sending photos next... (-_- )9 |

Mine runs again! Seafoam did the trick. Now to figure out why it smells like an oil furnace, and why it feels like a one cylinder XB. |

Ok, I finally had a chance to work on the "ticking" noise, my Frankenstein motor is making. The exhaust rocker has a little bit of play on the rocker shaft and the shaft has some scoring. Also, you can remove the OEM push rod tube while the head is still bolted down. But can not flex the tube enough to put it back in. So, I need collapsible push rod tubes. Any recommendations? (Zippers is sort of local for me.) If I get a XB set, is the front and rear tubes the same? |

Hey Buell Blast/ Thumper owners. I don't know how many of you are a member of the FSSNOC, Four Stroke Single National Owners Club? They are owners of single cylinder motorcycles, and travel everywhere on them. The do what is called Thumper Cafes. These are locations around the country, usually about 3-5 per year. They guys will ride many hundreds of miles just to meet, have lunch, talk, and then drive home. California is fortunate to host one of these this year. It is going to be June 11th in Olancha, California, at the Ranch House Cafe. You should be a member of the FSSNOC, but you do not have to be. The cost is $10, plus you cover your own food, lodging, and fuel. But it is fun. Olancha is near Death Valley. A beautiful area. It opens at 10 am, they eat at noon. You can check this out at fssnoc@yahoo.com, or call 620 663 1869. Good homecooking. There are always prizes for the ones that ride the furtherest, etc. Check it out, and show them The Buell Blasts!.. rex |

I thought the same thing...jump start and few miles later...speedo freezes at 55 MPH and odometer disappears, then, pop, pop, pop and completely dies. New battery and starts right up but check of stator indicates problem. Picture tells the story:

Wires look fine, nothing cut into them. Only issue is that coil - looks more like could have broken from vibration, although heat is an issue down here. Anything we should put a closer inspection on. What other possible causes are there? BTW - needed to use impact wrench to get that stator nut off, what do you use to get that 190 spec torque when putting back on? Slowhand - as Michael Conrad would say "lets be careful out there!" Don't they have roads like that in CA? |

I used my a snap-on 1/2" tq wrench, it goes to 250ft-lbs. I believe the nut had lock tight on it, and i had to use a impact as well. |

Going to see if a full overnight on the battery tender gets it to charge up. When I went out to start it yesterday, it only turned over probably 4 times, on what I thought was a full charge. Pulled the seat, and the postive terminal was about 4 flats out from being tight. I must have messed that up putting on the quick connect for the tender back in the fall. So, I will give it a shot this afternoon, if nothing, Going to try a new battery. (Getting a look at the stator will be next, I just don't have a couple of hours to get into it. Little league season starts tonight, and I have three kids playing on two different teams, and I'm crazy enough to coach one of them ) |

Dont get crazy over that battery either. A loose terminal is enough for it not to charge or start your bike. If its cold outside that will drain it quick too. A bad stator isnt an especially common problem so I wouldnt jump to take it apart before I actually tested to see if it was charging. |

Indy - Wishing you luck and back on the road again soon. Have fun with the Little League - being a Dad - the toughest job you'll ever love & most rewarding. Hate being without a ride. I dreamed last night I went out and bought a V-Star (my 2nd bike) - could the other side be calling me back? Hopefully the stator will not take too long to get here and we can have it up and running by next weekend, hopefully |

I have a 3/4 inch torque wrench that goes up into the he-man range! If, and thats a BIG IF, I broke that puppy outta the container I keep it in, I could torqe anything from a block away! I think Harbor Freight has one that goes that high on the cheap. You only use something like that every once in a great while it doesn't pay to get a Snap-On when you only use it once. It is kind of like carrying a $900 pistol in your pocket, nobodys ever going to see it...and if someone does, they really don't appreciate it... |
