HI, I've looked through all the performance sections I could find, and all I could find about fuel economy and couldn't find the answer... Looking at the most common modifications for performance: splitters, re-jetting, shimming the needle, air box mods, exhaust, etc. How do these affect your fuel economy, on average? (assuming your driving style doesn't change.) |

Welcome Nathan! While I wouldnt call a splitter a common modification you can look to it dropping as low as 40mpg. Tweaking and a great deal of tuning can improve this but you'll have to spend the time and make the right choices. Some mods can increase mpg such as just the exhaust. Swapping out to an XB head and piston can increase mpg and performance. If your riding style doesnt change after performance mods, then I'm not sure why you'd bother Thats my opinion. |

touche. Of course you would ride it harder, just knocking out one variable that someone could throw at me. But, thank you. |

Think Dial A Jet by Thunder Products - better acceleration and less fuel used if set up right. EZ |

Its still puzzles me, though, why better exhaust and intake(and, yes, you'd have to jet) would not increase fuel efficiency as it would on a four wheeled vehicle. Can anyone explain? |

Different engines-they dont make single cylinder motorcars anymore. Different desires-you have more people wanting to increase their mpg in a car than you do on a motorcycle which already gets 70mpg. Bolt on a better exhaust and its going to get better mpg, But most of us richen up the mixture because we like the added power. The Blast is already on the edge of the lean limit from the factory. There isnt anyone out there making carbs, cams and manifolds for the Blast single with mpg and power in mind. There's no market for it. The cams produced specifically for the Blast are 2 in number: B50's & B70's, made for power. Everything else (and probably the B50's & 70's) would be adapted from a twin, but the Blast doesnt get the benefit from using a dual exhaust which any good twin camshaft would be designed for. A better exhaust can be made for the Blast, but it would be custom. The aftermarket exhausts are made for the mass market with common modifications. One modification gives power and doesnt sacrifice mpg: bolting on an XB top end. The combustion chamber is a far more efficient design than the Blast head for producing power. The cams are comparable to the B70's in spec. And its all factory stock meaning the risk is very low that you'll diminish reliability. You can modify specifically for mpg and more power, but most just want more power. Given the often short ownership span of the Blast, most just go for the grunt and dont stick around long enough to fine tune it. EZ is one of the few that has kept at it year after year constantly looking to improve what he's already using. |

What about, once you make the performance mods, you realize that fun over whelms the MPG factor....kind of like an addiction? |

Welcome to the Dark side! We serve milk and cookies with our obsession! I fully expect to get 50 mpg now with the Dial A Jet, while I was very close to 40 mph before the modification - I was 15 mpg better on the hot rod, than the stock configuration modified Blast. EZ |

Yes...the dark side. The Blast is no rocket and the more power you get, the more you want to play! Ever hear a Blast engine at 7500 rpm? Thats addictive! Or maybe that kick at about 4500 rpms, when a nice set of cams kick in!! Or late at night, tucked in, and watch that needle hit 100mph. Oh yeah!!! |

On a single that's a hoot! - then bring it down for the sweeper, so light and easy, - a modified Blast is a Blast! Inexpensive long term fun and work horse - lol EZ |
