I've just spent 50 minutes trying to get the primary drain plug reinstalled. I haven't dropped my muffler (stock), but I'm ready to. I'm VERY frustrated. It's 65 degrees and I'm getting my bike out of winter storage (even if it has to go back in next week), but I should be out riding, not messing w/ a drain plug.

How to I get the frickin' thing back in? HELP!

Thanks...

You jost have to mess with it till it lines back up, if you got it out, you can get it in. Relax, have a beer, and approach it with a calm open mind - you'll get it back in.

I finally got it. I stuck a wooden piece of shim stock under it to hold it up while I spun it.
5 hours to change my primary fluid, ride it so it got heated up then changed the oil.
For a bike that's "easy to work on" - it's a lot of pain. Loosening the Y / footpeg bracket & reinstalling the primary drain plug are ridiculous.
I must say though, it really does shift better w/ full synth in the primary... I hope the bike appreciates the K&N oil filter.

Thanks EZ - I did take a break to pick the kids up at school, but the beer will have to wait 'til tomorrow night.

Now that you've done it 'right', next time you can do it the easy way.
Drain it out at the plug, then fill it through the transmission vent tube. Very, very simple. All you have to do is pull the plug, nothing more. It does take a long time to fill through the vent hose, but you could spend that time doing other things. Unless you like unbolting the Y-frame!LOL!

The Y-Frame is the by far the worst designed part of a Blast: nearly impossible to remove, nearly impossible to attach, and it blocks access to the primary.

So un-Blastish.

So... is the transmission vent hose the thickish rubber tubing under the seat that I pull out of my way when loosening the Y, and is open on one end. It looks that way from the service manual, but I want to be sure. Then I just go on faith & put in 1qt after it's drained?

I agree that it may be slower, but way less frustrating. I'll take that any day!

Yes, that is the vent tube.
Faith or Trust: your choice. I believe it was Swampy years ago, that put forth the vent tube trans oil change.
I tested it. I drained it hot. I did everything the way the manual listed for refilling and it came out to one quart. I've since re checked it several times doing it the vent tube way and "traditional" way. One Quart. You just drain it until it runs dry (or mostly) the same way you would do it if you were going to pull the y-frame, etc. You can even measure what comes out if you want.

Now, there's going to be the naysayers that say it only takes 30 ounces (or 29, or 31, or...). If you are worried, measure out 2 ounces of trans oil and see how much it really is. Its not much. Certainly nothing to lose sleep over (or waste time writing a long post about).
FWIW: its just gears in a box. There's no pump or oil lines or really anywhere for oil to get trapped like there is with the engine oil. You could drain it stone cold after sitting because the oil has settled at the bottom of the case. Hot oil just drains better.

Be aware that the vent hose lying in the bottom of the seat frame channel acts as a natural funnel if you stick a hose in that area to wash things out.

I like to zip tie the hose to the top of the channel, that way water will have to flow up to get in the trans.

Sorry that I didn't post an appropriate "THANKS" sooner. I can't seem to post from my e-mails, for whatever reason.

Erik (and Swampy) - I totally get it, and will be doing vent hose approach from now on.
... and Swampy - great thinking on the ziptie. I've already done it, since the bike is due for a wash.

True thanks is in "paying it forward". You'll help someone else down the line, thats how it works at the Thumper side and motorcycling in general.
So, thank you ; )
