I can't start a new thread in the appropriate section so, here goes!
2006 Blast, rejetted etc' no problems until last Friday. Whatever I do the engine will idle high. I tried adjusting the carb' idle screw. I have it screwed all the way in & the bike is still idling really high. Adjusting the idle screw has no effect. I have a brand new boot & Thumpe's brace. I reinstalled this also. I took the carb' off and extracted the idle screw, spring etc'. Cleaned & replaced it all to no effect. Anyone got any ideas?.

I ordered the parts yesterday. I hope to have it fixed this coming weekend. i'll post once I have attempted a fix.

As lovely as that sounds I think I'll stick with the straight roads & ambient temp's where I am now, thanks! I rode 300 miles last Saturday & had to stop to put on a 2nd shirt towards the end. It's cold here this week. Only in the 50's during the day. Still riding though (I have a second Buell).

OK: Replaced diaphragm, cleaned jets etc' still same High Idle. Adding throttle makes the motor stall. I disconnected the auto enricher, same High Idle.
Anyone else have any other ideas?
I made sure the diaphragm is correctly installed.

You have an intake leak test - put your hand over carb mouth, does idle lower? And bike run smoother?

How do I fix an intake leak? I have Thumpe's "bent" filter setup on the carb w/a "superboot".
I think I am having a senior moment as I cannot visualize where the intake leak could be.
I have been thru the manual 3 ties & cannot identify anything that I think relevant.
What am I missing?
Where could the leak be?

OK! I pulled the air inlet (PN:27442-OOY) from the rear of the cylinder. The O Ring looks intact but I will replace it. I went thru the Owners manual & couldn't find a PN for it. Any ideas?

o-ring pt. number - 27444-00Y is the correct part number according to the 07 parts manual and the 00/01.

Is the header squarely mounted to the head? - no leaking there? In mounting the intake you used a new gasket as well - I forget if he supply's one, but any time the intake comes off, a new gasket then goes on - even I have reused gaskets, sometimes I got away with it,sometimes not, I always have a spare on hand though when I need one - they are cheap.

So, you didnt do anything to your Blast and this problem just started? Didnt have the carb apart for any reason?

A serious intake leak seems right on the money.

Throttle cables arent stuck?

Carb slide stuck?

Do you have an old good boot to try?

Is the vacuum nipple on the rear top of the carb plugged? (you may not have one, but check).

Did you do the WD40 test?

If you have the tank off I would definitely do a compression check.
I would also check the timing.


It should be noted that if the idle is high enough you are no longer using the carb idle circuit.

In order:
Did the WD40 test. It was inconclusive as the idle is so high it's hard to judge if it is getting higher w/the introduction of WD40.
The idle is so high I am reluctant to run the motor for too long as I don't want it to ingest a valve.
Throttle cables were not stuck.
Vacuum nipple on carb' is plugged.
Carb' slide is operating - I assume correctly.
Tank is still on. Carb' + intake is off the bike.
Boot is new & I have tried it w/a new spare. No change in idle.
I will get the new o ring for the intake ( thanks for the PN EZ!)
I will reassemble everything & then see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for the input. I will have to order the O ring, so, I will update this thread once I know what is happening.

Also: Yes it just started idling high on the ride home from work. I hadn't touched anything on the bike recently, other than installing some footpegs. I am afraid I am bemused by this but I will persevere with it.

Check your throttle cable path thoroughly as well - I've hung it up with that result about 3 times.

I re-checked the throttle cables & they are functioning correctly.
I am pinning my hopes on the intake O ring being the culprit.
I will keep the thread up to date as I get the parts/do the work.

So with the engine off, you have stuck your finger in the carb and lifted the slide? Did you then look in the carb and watch the butterfly open and close while you twisted the throttle? Then with the throttle closed you checked that the throttle shaft pulley went all the way back to the idle position?

And you loosened the throttle cable adjustments all the way to put slack in the cables so you could see if your throttle shaft pulley was going all the way closed and sitting against the idle adjustment stop screw?

Swampy: I replaced the diaphragm & re-installed it. (slide is working OK) Checked throttle (butterfly) opening/closing w/throttle application. I took the throttle cables off of the throttle shaft pulley on the carb'. The throttle shaft pulley is fully closing. I'm hoping it's the intake seal/o ring that is the culprit. I will order one soon and then see if it makes a difference.

The "O" ring, once it takes a "set" will start leaking with the slightest bit of movement.

AFAIK it's been in there for 6 years w/no maintenance/service/inspection etc'. I just have to get off of my duff & order one from the stealership. I think it'll wait until the New Year for 2 reasons. 1) I have the X1 & 2) I am really PO'd w/the Blast at the moment. This last year has seen a series of minor but annoying problems w/it that are basically easy fixes but take me a long time to identify & repair.
Merry XMas. i will post my results once I have tackled the issue.

Yeah - couldn't hurt! What about carb intake gasket - you put a new one on with Dan/thumpe's kit - right? Pealed off the backing and stuck it on the clean surface matching holes, type of thing? And if you took it off again after that, you again re-installed with a new gasket? I've never had luck re-using that gasket, others have -

I haven't removed the carb' intake so I haven't messed with the intake gasket. Once I summon the motivation to tackle this issue I will replace all the pertinent gaskets. My "honey do" list has been extensive this holiday season so I haven't tackled this yet. The X1 has just had a new battery and my better half's goodwill towards motorcycle repair time, costs & motorcycles in general is wearing a little thin at the moment. I have three rooms to repaint at the house in the coming weeks so the Blast will probably not be messed with until February at the earliest. I will keep you informed if/when I make any progress.

I'm very doubtful of a carb to air cleaner gasket causing severe problems. Rather than replace the gasket just pull off the air cleaner (and venturi ring) and you've eliminated the problem.

I've had a similar problem, and although I haven't checked and replaced all the things Britchri10 did, I'd still like to figure out what's going on.

I was going to post a Youtube video showing how the throttle will just rev higher and higher, but instead I've decided to do it using prose...

So I turn on a warmed up bike and it does this:

thump...thump...thump...thump...thump..
thump...thump..thump..thump thump..thump..thumpthump.thump.thump.thumpthumpthumpthumpthumpthump!

this is without touching the throttle at all. (so it can't be throttle cable I can't imagine..)

Never tried WD40 test..just spray it in the airfilter/venturi and see if it revs higher? What is this diagnosing?

At idle, I note that putting my hand over the venturi doesn't change the sound and that very little air seems to be coming through the venturi. I wasn't smart enough to remember to open the throttle and re-check it...duh.
I doubt I need the auto-choke here in Hawaii - it's always above 75º..is that easy to disconnect and could that be causing this auto-revving? Seems like it happens more as the motor warms up.

(ps new boot installed last month so that shouldn't be an issue).

Re do the hand trick, it should try to cut out, if no change, then try tightening the boot clamps a smidge. and check.
