Hello everyone. I'm looking to buy a Thumper. Today I came and looked at one. The owner said it had the carburetor problem. It couldn't start. He pray the "carburetor spray" into the carb and it started. But it can't hold running, easy to die, I had to keep my hand on it and give it gas slowly to keep the engine running.
I don't know if the guy was telling the truth. Does that sound like carb problem to you guys? Is this fixable? He sells the bike for 1200$ and it just has 4000 miles. He just replaced the back tire and the exhaust header.
Please give me an advice. Thanks

Yes, its fixable and probably in the carb or carb related. While $1200 is a good price for a 2002, its barely a fair price for a bike that really doesnt run and my guess is you'll have to pay someone to fix (I dont know how mechanical or experienced you are).
Probably not a big deal to fix, but again, if someone else is doing the work and that someone else is a Buell/Harley dealer its going to be expensive. I dont have much faith in a non- Buell dealer to fix the problem unless they are familiar with the Blast. The Blast isnt complicated, but maybe thats why so many people screw them up.

PS welcome and good luck! Offer less $$ if you like the bike.

There is this small winery up in the mountains, a set of eight of them - If I remember - our goal was to look for land for a future retirement cabin - no biggie - so the wife looks and finds this cabin for rent by the winery - usually used by visiting family (big family at one time) - it was close to the properties we wanted to see, the last 150 feet of road to the cabin is dirt, but no big deal. The roads to to there are 1 to 36 turn east - voila your there. included in the price of the rental was the usage of the surrounding grounds - the small river that goes by the cabin on one side, the two stocked swimming/fishing ponds to the other side, and a small park with BBQs, a spit, horseshoe pits/stakes, restrooms, then on the final side of the 3 bedroom cabin is an included mother-in-law cabin. No TV, no Phone, 1 bar on the cell outside - was enough. Trees everywhere - it was terrific - didn't want to leave!

Aaahhh EZ - sounds like Heaven on Earth, fine wine, fine roads, cabin, trees, fishing, swimming, BBQ - so when is the first Blastards party?

Haven't been to CA since about 2001 or so and did ride through the Nappa Valley area on our way out, all I remember is that I couldn't wipe the smile off my face.

Hi Erik

Good luck Nibolat.

To Gearheaderiko , thank you for your promt response. I owned a vintage Vespa scooter before and I had to fix it every week by my self including carb work. I don't know if that knowledge is enough for me to do some research online and fix the carb of blast by my self. How hard is it. Does any body here know how to do it that can show me? Although the owner said Harley would just charge me around $100 in the worst case the fix it. I like the design of Blast, that's why I picked it. Still wondering if I should buy it from the guy.
Thank you ever one. Great forum.

Hey guys. Can somebody verify this is correct? I looked in the knowledge Vault and after reading the thread about the rocker box gaskets, I wanted to verify the quantity of gaskets needed.

For the Blast, The following is required, right?

17353-89 rocker cover gasket, main (qty: 1)
16800-84A rocker box gasket (qty: 1)
17358-84A rocker cover gasket, inner (qty: 1)
63858-49 seals for rocker cover screws (qty: ? 4?)
11190 O-Ring, Push Rod Cover (qty: 2)
26432-76A - oil return o-ring, (qty: 2)
17606-00YA PCV Valve Grommet (qty: 1)

Do these quantities look right? My nieces Blast has developed a rocker box leak and I want to have my brother bring it up to me this weekend so I can fix it. However, I need to make sure the local dealership has the parts and in the right quantities.

Thanks,
Wayne

(17358-84-I added the A)

If you can fix a Vespa, you can fix a Blast. There's plenty of carb info here and people willing to help to get it done.

Push rod o-rings & oil return o-rings are only if you remove the cylinder head.

All the parts come in a kit# 17036-91 or 17036-91A except for the grommet. Kits probably cheaper and its the same for XL's, XB's or P3's.
If its a 2007 or later Blast it needs a different kit (and gaskets).

The best part about the carb is that it's only one. I used to work on I4 UJM's, oh, it's a pain in the ass!

Even my new-to-me Ducati Monster is a pain with it's 2 FCR's... I like revving the thumper at the stop light a little before taking off to bring the rpms up, but on the Monster, the accelerator pump can pump enough fuel at idle to flood the motor! lol.

Damn those termignioni's! They sound so good.

The blast is a big ol fun scooter. I'd bet that one you looked at is still in good enough condition that it just needs the jets blasted with spray, and hopefully the passages in the carb can be opened with some spray, and not require a dip.

Thanks Gearheaderiko. Actually, I priced out the gaskets and the kit (which also comes with a boatload of unnecessary gaskets for the Blast is $60.95. The total for all the gaskets individually is $23.15. I was shocked at the price difference, but most of the gaskets are only $2-4 dollars each.

Just talked to my friendly local dealer. Turns out that the kit has twice the number of gaskets, thus the price difference (makes sense, since it's designed to cover the Sporty as well as the XB).

Sometimes you get one cylinder, sometimes both. They never seem to specify. : ( When I call, its obvious they are looking at the same exact info I have and cant tell me : (: (
And I guess the last time I bought a rocker gasket at the dealer they gave me the "bro" discount.* At the time it was much cheaper to buy the set. (I checked the prices and they are what you said-cheaper).

* bro -bend right over. Its no wonder I never shop "in store" unless I really have too.

Congrats ! : )

Questions: Is it stock-no modifications? (stock exhaust, air filter, etc).
Has it been sitting a long time?
Did the owner try to fix it or work on it? Who diagnosed the problem?
I know you may not know the answers but.....
Please dont just tear into it 'willy nilly'. The Blast has certain common problems and many here have gone through the various ones. We can save you time.

First is "Das Boot". The intake boot is the most common problem with the Blast. Most here would bet odds it needs replacing. It may not be easy to see the split without taking the air box off. Not hard. Plan on replacing the boot $10.

The second on the list is a clogged slow jet especially if the bike has sat. $3-$6 and if its still stock (#42), you'll want to change it to a #45 anyway.

Get a repair manual asap. e-bay or the dealer.

..........and please dont just tear the carb apart "to give it a good cleaning". This rarely helps or is necessary and finds many a novice taking it to the dealer: ( You all new I'd say it: )

My niece's Blast is a 2002. I ended up having to take the entire carb apart (including all the jets), just to get it running. The idiot who owned it previously left jelly, erm, gas the tank and lines for 4 years! He hadn't even tried to start it during that time period. My niece ended up with a super nice Blast with under 800 miles on it!

In all honesty, I didn't feel the carb was that hard to work on. However, it wasn't my first rodeo when it came to carbs.

Thanks Gearheaderiko
-As far as I know the only mod part was the exhaust.
-The bike never got sat, he ran it every one in a while.
-Using the "ease spray" or whatever he called it I could start the bike and ride on it. Had to pay attention though other wise the bike can die and hard to be started again. Other words new biker can keep the engine running.
-Please confirm my understanding from you. Are you saying that I should just go ahead and buy though items? Cause mostly I need to replace them? If so should I wait until replace them or is there any diagnosing thing that I can do right now to find out my problem. I don't mind take everything apart. That's my passion. ^^
Big thank!!!

I'd buy the boot (Part #27443-00Y) and the slow jet. Its good to have a spare boot around since its the weakest link. The slow jet is cheap and the #45 is a common stock jet in many Harleys so the dealer should have it on hand. If/when you pull the bottom off the carb and find you already have a #45 in there, you can return it. Its a must if you have an aftermarket exhaust.
The boot is available from a Buell dealer. The jet is available from both Buell and Harley dealers. See our list of sponsors above if you wish to order by mail.

"However, it wasn't my first rodeo when it came to carbs." LOL! Uh, yeah. Problem is it is a lot of peoples first rodeo!
If I had a dime for every time I read "this guy said I should just give the carb a good cleaning and I'll be fine". Translation: I dont really know whats wrong with your bike, but I think its in the carb, so go ahead and clean it good.
In the 7 years I've been on this board, I cant count how many times someone has taken their carb apart and had problems after they did. Then we try to figure out what they did wrong or what part fell out or.....
Carb problems, when occurring 'naturally', are usually just a couple of things. Its much easier to diagnose and repair when things are left intact.
Its just safer to assume that most people arent carb experienced.

Here's a question for those of you who have done the rocker box oil leak. Where do the pushrod gaskets go? Looking at the manual it looks like they sit in the groove where the pushrods are. However, there weren't any gaskets that came out of there. I'm leery of pulling off the pushrod housing since I didn't get a gasket for that and who knows if my local dealership has one.

Ideas?

You cant pull off the pushrod housing unless you pull off the cylinder head.
Are you removing the cylinder head? (you'll need more gaskets)

Pushrod housing has 2 o-rings at the top and 1 rubber 'gasket' at the bottom.

Gearheaderiko, I ended up figuring it out. Thanks! (FYI, I didn't pull off the pushrod housing).

I found the old paper gaskets pretty much gone, what was left of them was stuck on the cylinders and I spent a lot of time gently scraping them off with a razor blade. Got the engine all buttoned up, only to realize I forgot to put the push rods back in! (what a dumb ass move that was), so I pulled it apart again and put the push rods back in, then buttoned her up.

changed the plug (it needed it!), air filter, and added oil, then took it out for a test ride. Ran great and didn't have a single drop of oil leaking anywhere. : )

It did take me about 3X as long as I planned, but I had a hard time getting one of the rear exhaust bolts off the hanger. Of course seeing as how this bike has never been apart, that didn't surprise me. My niece still has only put 3100 miles on it in a year. I tried to get her to ride with us to homecoming on it, but she wouldn't do it.

I replaced the boot and everything just works like charm. My slow jet is still on the way. Thanks a lot. I rode it today and found another problem with it. Sad sad
The millage counter works but the speedometer doesn't. I rode the bike around and the millage increased but it never showed my speed. Any suggestion for action or solution?
