Is it stock? Did you re-jet to 175 with exhaust and intake mods? What is normal gas mileage at 70 to 75 mph? |

2hrcommute - Re-jetted (can't recall jet size) pro-series intake with K&N, D&D exhaust: I have never really calculated my mileage. On back-road two lane riding 60-70 mph I can easily get 145-150 miles without hitting reserve. On the highway at 75-80 it's more like 120 miles. Too lazy to do the math. I've only had a couple times where it was less than that, riding highway at steady 80 and getting up to 85-90 to pass, headwind and lots of 18 wheelers. Also note: I try not to carry lots of heavy gear,Thumper is the heavy gear mule. And I don't add as much weight to the factor as some might I also have a Givi windscreen, I don't know if this helps or hurts when it comes to mileage. Helps ME, can go all day without wind fatigue. Sorry if this isn't much help, but keep the questions coming, people will generally have helpful answers for you. |

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry Gearheaderiko, but I did clean the carbs. The looked alright. However, like you guys said, the boot was barely tightened at all. I was able to spin it by hand. I retightened it, and it helped a lot. The air filter looked almost brand new and I could see through it, but I have never worked with air filters before, so I don't if it is functioning alright. Riding it, I hit 75 in 4th, but did not want to push it any harder. However, switching to 5th, it had trouble staying above 65/70. That was on full throttle. The boot helped, but still don't feel like it could reach 90. The previous owner used 87, and told me to use it. I will switch to 91/93 now, and see if it makes a change. Will change the oil/filter this weekend hopefully. Lastly, I am really doubting the experience of the previous mechanic. He replaced the rear tire recently, but definitely got the wrong one. There is about 2 mm of play between the tire and rear fork. The plastic mud guard was literally touching the tire and had a hole worn in it, as well as scratches in the tire that made the center all roughed up. There was tire residue/particles built up on the mud guard and fork from the debri. Still ridable, but I want to change it ASAP. I want a beefy tire, but I've heard that Blasts burn through rear tires. Any recommendations? Thanks again guys. You're a great help. |

What's the brand of tire? Size? 75mph in 4th is all I think you get. Might be as high as 80mph, but no higher. After that you hit the rev limiter (6500rpm)(Sorry, I havent had a stock redline in a long time.) If you're having trouble in 5th, it might be the primary chain too tight. You also might still be jetted too lean .you might be suffering multiple problems. -common on Blasts where previous owners/mechanics didnt know what they were doing or werent educated in the Blast. |

And minimum 91 octane gas. Using 87 is a false economy, and the bike won't like it. Sounds like some basic things you can do and really turn the bike around for yourself. |

And now, let's play stump the champs.... Riding along, 50 mph, gentle accel, suddenly feels as if the belt slipped or engine died or something, but it comes back on again, all in a second. Has happened before under same circumstances, 3 times in two weeks. Random, though, and not all the time. Clutch? Loose primary? Too little primary fluid? Bad karma? (The last time I worked on it, I did wear Speedos while dancing around the oak tree.) |

My bike was doing exactly what you describe. Turned out to be a loose connection at the battery. The screws seemed tight but while fishing around under the seat I noticed the negative cable sparking. Loosened the screws and retightened and everything is fine. Hope your problem is as simple. |

Speedos? Seriously? DO NOT MOCK THE GODS. I'm not sure you can even undo that...... Does sound electrical and not mechanical. Check those battery cables and grounds (per Dann). The ignition module, you'll just have to wait on. It might go bad all at once. It might go away with the cooler weather. It might never get any worse. It is possible it could also be fuel related, but I'm betting on electrical. |

I'll check the battery connections. I replaced it a few months ago and it could have worked loose. My oak tree is in the front yard and the neighbors frown on my lilly-white, naked, grub-like body writhing around the tree like I was stuck in a spider web. The back yard only has tulip poplars and somehow I didn't think naked and tulip poplar would work as well as speedos and oak. I could be wrong |

LOL! What are your neighbors doing up at midnight anyway...... KKsx: Nice! My guess is red will be an accent colour?! There was some speculation between some of us that cutting the 'box' section off the back might make the frame less stiff. Wouldnt (to me) seem so, but I didnt (and dont) design motorcycles. Let me know if you notice anything. Nothing like a blank canvas to work from Did you get a shed just for the Blast? |

Well not JUST for the Blast...the XB needs a home too...LoL I'm planning a mostly black color scheme with (you guessed it!) red accents. Just like you, I am not a motorcycle designer, HOWEVER after cutting off the Blast's a$$, I honestly in no way shape or form can see that it will affect the rigidity of the backbone (it mounts to the front and back of the engine afterall and I'll be building a new tail which will add some support anywho). I have been planning on lopping off the back for quite some time, I just never got up the courage to do it (money constraints, no place to work, ect.) I just moved into my new house on July 1st and one of the first orders of business was building an amazing shed (read: Small garage built by a 30yr veteran carpenter that is sturdier and better put up than some new houses...) I will post pics of the "shed" (screw it, it's a small workshop, that or the nicest shed I've ever seen) and more of the progress as it comes along over in the pics section. One noteworthy item, to anyone considering ever building their own rear for their Blast, get a oxy/act torch or plasma cutter because while an angle grinder with a 4 1/2in cuttoff wheel is an amazing tool for cutting and removing most metal things, due to the design and structure of the Blast tail it is NOT EASY. Thanks for the enthusiasm Erik, it sure helps! |

It's a 130/90-16 Pirelli. Do you think it would be unreasonable to call up the mechanic and ask that he pay for half of it? It he had bought the correct tire, I wouldn't be having this problem at all. I am also trying to decide whether to get the c600 barracuda 130/80 from Cheng Shin, or just a standard 120/80 from pirelli. It's $90 for Cheng Shin, and $69 for Pirelli. Should I be concerned that the tires is selling for so cheap. I just googled the tire size/"buell blast" and came up with it. |

Get the Pirelli Diablo 140/70 rear and 110/70 front and enjoy - the price is right and the handling and life span is great! EZ |

Mine were a tad bit cheaper, but I've had the Barracudas for the last year and a half and they've been great tires! Warm up farily quickly, awesome in the rain, and they seem to be wearing pretty well. EZ - not only is it the fastest, it adds 5hp! I love the crap out of my BUB (IMHO the best or at least my favorite sounding pipe for the Blast). The only problem is that due to my overly spirited riding style, the bottom of the megaphone is now dented flat... |

Pirelli, Pirelli, Pirelli!!! Dont let the cheap price deter you. Thats what we raced on (stock MT75) and there's a reason Buell went against the grain and went to Pirelli's on their bikes. I think Dunlops might be the most expensive Blast tire and the worst performing! Did you buy that tire for your bike or did the previous owner? Not much you can say if it was the previous owner, they may have wanted the 'bigger' tire. If they sold you that tire as a stock replacement, I'd have them buy me the stock Pirelli and replace it for free. If you arent having any more problems with the 130/90 (IE:the damage is done), I'd just run it until it wears out. Thats a big tire!!! |

Agreed KK- I have also been wanting to chop off the tail of my Blast for quite some time. I have a lot of ideas about what I want to do with it. My dad is a welder craftsman by trade and have good friends knowledgeable in CAD and have CNC's set up for custom 1 off bicycle parts. So I have some decent resources at my disposal, but alas no funds or space to work atm. Anything from an airtech kit I have had my eyes on to a classically designed custom cafe tail. The Bolt-tail Blasts look decent too, imho. Guess I have some time to think about it too... I'm excited to see the development of your project. Anything to make it Kustom huh? |

I have already Changed out the exhaust, removed the air box, rejetted the carb., Givi front windscreen, took off the belt guards, Changed the handle bars to a cafe racer style. but I am current waiting on my new street fighter headlight. and I will prolly lose the windscreen after that. |
