It was more that I was taking the turn too fast, and calculated that I would end up in the dirt at the apex of the turn. Being that there was the turn out at the same point, I decided I had a better chance of stopping in the dirt before going over the edge than I did making the turn in the dirt and not crashing. Calculated correctly, but seriously had Kyle wondering if I had decided to commit suicide that day. It seems I am always a little hot in the turns. I think I say you two in the insurance company commercial.

Hey, just bought a 2006 blast, and everything appeared to be fine at first, but first time riding it on a highway it was so slow. I couldn't even break 60 not going down hill. It reached 60 no problem, but then it's like it just stopped trying. Is there a rev limiter problem? I read other reviews, and they said the rev limiter doesn't do anything that drastic? Also, the oil is old and I will be changing it asap, but could that have been the case?

Bad news bears : ( TnT

Sounds like you have some extra air getting into the carb. Or not enough gas is getting through. Those would be my guesses.

If I were you, I would just replace the boot connecting your carb to engine. First thing I would do after switching out the Dunflops to something not as slick as snot. Make sure it's on nice a tight, wouldn't trust previous owner had it on right.

Check your air filter; run some sea foam or carb cleaner through in your gas, make sure you have good, min 91/93 preferred gas; replace the boot as recommended above.
What was the bike's behavior when it was at 60 mph? Was it stuttering/sputtering? How did it sound?

TNT - very sorry to hear about that, sometimes life just sucks. If they got the keys to the bike but didn't take the bike, watch out...somebody may pay another visit. Wish you well.

Jgeating - read through this site, there is so much good information and many talented, very knowledgeable people. You will find answers and help. I regularly ride on the interstate with an average speed of 75-80 and shorts bursts up to 90, no problem. The Blast is an awesome piece of machinery. Welcome to the world of being a Blastard!

Jgeating: starting from the simplest first you either have a stuck vacuum slide, a clogged main jet, bad gas, bad "boot" or your timing is way off.
If the oil is very old the gas is too. May have mucked up your carb.
A stock Blast should do 85 all day long no problem.
To Answer your questions, it is not the rev limiter.
You'll know when you hit it.
Slipping clutch? does the engine rev up and not go faster.
Offer us up more information someone will help out.

Welcome Jgeating!
Something is very wrong if it will only do 60mph. The most common problems of low top speed are the intake boot ("Das Boot") and the primary chain being too tight. Everything Dann said is also possible especially wanting to know a little more history on the bike:
Has it ever run right for you?
Who worked on it last?
Stock?
Other symptoms (as in "stuttering/sputtering", etc.)?

Please, please, please, do not take the carb apart "just to give it a good cleaning". Its rarely necessary and besides a clogged slow jet, most other problems are often caused by taking it apart "to give it a good cleaning"!

And yes, it could be the rev limiter, but that would mean very low speeds in all the gears. If you can get it up too 30 mph in first gear, its not the rev limiter. Most often though hitting the rev limiter will cause it to sputter and hesitate.
I have had a rev limiter cut in way too early and a non stock rev limiter hit the redline and just hold it there (no sputtering). But those are rare examples.

PS if it will only do 60mph, continuing to run it make cause severe engine damage (depending on the cause).
The wrong oil could, in theory, cause this, but its highly unlikely. If the oil was that thin, you've already done serious engine damage: (

Tnthumper, a bit of wiring involved, but you could hide a remote kill switch.
Locked up is best as well, though, since some guys and a pickup truck can so easily lift and drive away with a Blast.

Hi, retightened the boot screws and checked the oil again. Just changed it a 1,000 miles ago and it hasn't been drinking for the past 5K, but it's been 100-degrees regular and I was down a lot.

Topped it all the way up and now she's running to notch again.

If the bike won't go over 60 or is sluggish, retighten the boot and check the oil, or just go ahead and change it. Air filter has made big difference, too

Is there a section on the TPS? I must be doing the search wrong because it doesn't come up. Do I need a special tool to test the TPS or can I meter it through the 3 and 5 wire?
I posted a question in the carb section (yesterday,no replies to that), but the more I think about it the more it looks like the TPS. Sputters at more than 3/4 throttle and losses power, also gas mileage has been around 40 mpg from 48 mpg b4 exhaust intake mods.

sputters at 3/4 to full throttle and losses power.
Rev limiter worked at 30 mph in 1st gear.
Changed the boot and still the same.
My homemade splitter does have the 3/8 hole a little far to the left.
Any ideas b4 I go and dremel the splitter out?

If it didnt have this problem before you worked on the carb, its not the TPS (unless you pulled the TPS apart). The TPS will not generally cause a sputtering and loss in power. It will usually cause low power and surging. If in doubt, pull the plug on the TPS (after its warmed up) and ride it. If that fixes the problem, then its the TPS. You probably wont notice any difference.

Your symptoms are usually what happens with a stack and incorrect (too restrictive) air filter (aka Outerwears).

Dont know anything about the splitter. Just pull the stack and splitter off. If the problem goes away, you know what it was!

if it's not the TPS I'll go back to the carb thread now.
The stack and 3 outwears filters worked great for 4,000 miles so we'll go back to the carb thread and see.

I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time...

Milt lol!
Also I rode for 4,000 miles that way because even with 3 times the filters it still ran better than the stock.
Now it rocks!! Didn't know it could be that good and my gas mileage is back in the mid 40's.
Now I really am Blasting on the dark side and doing it with a big smile.
Thanks EZ, Gearhead
