I loved the Pirellis also but could not get many miles on them and I just don't have a big enough wallet to keep me on the road with them. The front Pirelli runs forever, I have 15,000 miles on it right now and it still looks great.

The Avon for rear gives me more mileage, but with the lack of good tread pattern in the center of the tire and with the long straight roads I seem to encounter most of the time, the center wears out and the tire just squares off. It's a shame, still lots of tread on edges. Anyone want to buy a "slightly used" Avon - all you have to do is ride in a constant lean

There is very little clearance between tire and the D&D exhaust so I worry a little about going with a bigger tire. Who has a D&D and is running anything other than a Pirelli or Avon 120/80?

BTW - Hi ya'll

Run the Avon with 2 to 4 more lbs of pressure than usual.

Themegster,
Didn't you use the Avon AM26 on the rear of your old Blast with great results?
The Avon AM26 is supposed to be a dual compound tire for long mileage.

I have been weaving on the ulysses while riding to try and keep the shoulders round....at least that is what I tell Trish, she doesn't seem to mind at all.

Rear tires, well after a summer spent on my bicycle I'm back on my blast for the school commute, I have another month of so with my rear tire but I'm looking for a new tire that will last longer for boring commutes than the AM63. I'm looking at the ST66, the Michelin Gold Touring or maybe the Diablo if someone can convince me that I'll get good mileage out of it......Opinions?

I hear the Michelin is a shit tire, really bad handling, that the ST66 has the record for the most miles - 10,000+, and handles fairly - in line with the old Avons - it sounds like - I think 5000+ will be possible on the over-sized Diablo, but the handling is awesome!

OK I think the ST66 may be my tire but one last question, which one will get along with a AM63 front the best? I have a brand new one that

I have an AM26 on the rear, it is supposed to be a dual compound in the stock size, and an AM63 oversized front. It works out just fine, mileagewise I dunno, the Big Kid has only rode the Blast a couple of times this year, strange that working at a motorcycle shop takes up all your free time and keeps you from riding.

I installed my second ST66 rear 2 Saturdays ago along with a new Pirelli Sport Demon up front in 100/90 size. LOVE IT!!!

Here are pics of both:

Full profile side by side

Close up side by side

I hope to get as many miles off of this rear as the last one. I ended up replacing it at 10,500 miles. Could have gone longer but the front viper needed to be replaced ASAP.

Conway, I am looking forward to your report on the ST66 up front. I avoided it because of the harder compound it is likely using as a touring tire. The rear works well enough for me but is a little slow to warm up. I didn't want to take that chance with the front. I am confident you will like the ST66 in the back though and can't wait to hear your opinion of them. My goal is continue converting as many high mileage Blastards to the ST66 as I can. It is a great tire that has gone ignored long enough. Welcome to the fraternity!

I like the profile comparison shots - that probably more what Ed was looking for. . . Alas, the balancing media was delayed and I won't be putting on the ST66s until next weekend.

I too thought about the front tire compound but my Blast primarily serves as a commuter bike for me and I am intrigued by using a full set of touring tires. I will certainly keep everyone posted on how it goes.

Well, had a minor accident when working with the tires. . . Slipped with a tire spoon and smashed my hand (minor) and nicked the wire in the bead (major) so I had to pull the front tire off and put the old one back on. I never made it to the rear as I ran out of time. Now I have to order another new front and plan another work day. . . Bummer.

I finally retired my front stock Dunlop at 16,100 miles (~7.5 years old). I could go another 1k before reaching cords, but the tire is currently smooth and flat all the way around (tread worn down fully) and I don't wait for cords on front tires. Rear Dunlop is currently at 11k. We should have a public listing and entry data sheet for tires like there is for gas mileage. People can post what fits, longevity, and post comments about their experience with the tire. I'm going to try out some Duro's for the rear soon so I'll post back how they compare with the stock Dunlops.

Looking at Pirellis vs. Avons. Have read tons of stuff on tires KV posts, but not clear.
Pirelli MT75 profile looks pretty flat, compared to viper stryke round profile. Is handling and turn-in comparable? Also, Pirelli Diablo looks good, but I only see front tires in stock 120/80/16 rear spec size. Not sure I would use a front tire for the rear. Yet I see all these posts about the Diablo on the rear.

See the range of tires sizes here:
http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/index.php? cPath=362_433_434
The MT75 has a slower turn in than the Diablo front 110/70x16. See my posts in the Pirelli section for more on the MT75 vs the 140- 110 Diablo scooters. Both good tires, but a little different in handling.

The Diablo have a longer life and better handling characteristics. The MT75 is stock, inexpensive, and a very good handling basic tire. Both tires are very sticky from the go. And the Avon Viper would be equal to the MT75, and the Diablo's just rock!

Thanks for the Diablo link, Gearhead! From w2hat I am seeing, you have to go with a wider rear tire if you want the diablo's?

I just had a set of the Pirelli ST66's mounted and nitrogen inflated..had 13949 on the odometer and I will update as I get some wear on them. Put about 50 miles so far and they seem good to go.

Hey guys,
The Harley dealer mounted my rear tire backwards, I think. The arrow points counterclockwise when you look at it from passenger side?
If wrong can I ride on it the 45 miles at 75 mph to the dealer w/o damaging it?

Also they said they balanced it, but the weights never moved. When I asked the dealer said it turned out to not need any adjustments.
Is this true?

Nope!

You can probably ride it back to the dealer, but WHY?
For the love of Pete go somewhere else.

Usually you take the old weights off before you balance a tire, never have I found the weights to be in the same place when balancing new tires. More than likely they never balanced your tire.

Did they install the wheel on your bike? The thought of that scares the crap out of me. Did they remove the pulley to install the tire?

The opportunity for things to go south here just make me quiver...

I'm going back because they can't get away w/ this and I don't have time to go somewhere else.
I took the wheel in and they were to mount and balance.
This time I'm bird dogging'm while they work. GRRRRRR!!!
The Waco,TX Harley dealer stinks!!!!!
Maybe I should have said "don't kill me please."

You've learned the lesson non "Big Twin" owners learn early (so you're right on schedule), always specify which side the sprocket is on and check before you leave with the wheel. This happens very often to Sportster riders especially as some "Big Twins" and Sportsters use the same rear wheel, but the sprocket is on a different side. The Blast (having a Sportster based engine) has the sprocket on the 'wrong' side!
Dont lose faith just yet........but never expect the dealer (or anyone else) to know anything about your Blast.
