Well today was spent swapping belt and rear wheel bearings cleaning and painting exhaust. Since I have been home i have upgraded to the superboot and Dan's angled intake as well as new tires. Now to save up for the jardine exhaust and get rid of the pro-series.
G1vemtheboot,dan should get with you pretty quickly most times I got the superboot not 2 months ago so should be no problems.

My speedo just randomly stopped working, 1 day it was fine the next the needle wasn't moving. I still have full power though as far as lights to my gauge and odometer. I'd assume sensor problem but don't know where to look.

There is a diagnostic procedure in the shop manual that will pinpoint what's wrong.

I sold my manual along with my Blast, so I can't cite chapter and verse. I'm sure someone here can summarize the section for you or send you a scan of the relevant pages.

You should probably buy one. Makes exciting reading, and you'll never need a mechanic again.

My speedo doesn't work if I try to start the bike too quickly after turning on the ignition. I've developed a little routine to ensure that I give the speedo enough time to set or reset or whatever it does (don't know the correct term, I'm sure someone else can elaborate). Turn the key and watch the speedo needle. It should jump up briefly then settle back to zero. Then I flip the engine kill switch to "on", squeeze the clutch, then hit the starter. If I rush, the speedo doesn't work even though the gauge clearly has power. I hate not knowing my speed so if this happens I'll pull over and restart the bike. Works every time. Of course, if yours just quit while riding, then it's probably the sensor I suppose.

Hi ya'll

A while back I put on the Superboot. Just before leaving on a trip I was out riding, stopped for gas and when I restarted, it just blew that sucker right off. When we checked the boot, it didn't look like the stock boot with the ridges where the old style clamps went. It was all smooth in the middle, just two outer ridges. It had 10,000 miles on it. Anyway, put it back on and when I got home replaced it with a new OEM boot.

Week later, packed up and headed out. Somewhere in Arkansas it blows off again, and again... By the third time I put another new boot on with the old style clamps to get me home.

Is there a different boot that I am supposed to be using with the Superboot? I love the design and want to continue using it.

I apologize for posting here when there is most likely a dedicated spot for such issues, feel free to move post, just let me know where it is...I looked briefly, but patience has never been my virtue.

My superboot did the same thing to me. I finally figured out that I had deformed the actual bracket when installing it. I basically bent it back to the correct shape and re-installed it. Since then I haven't had a problem with it. (now up to about 2000 miles). The superboot bracket I have uses the OEM Boot, same as the one that came with the bike when new.

I finally had time to work on the Frankenstein motor. (Bottom end from parts bike, top end from my bike)
The motor is almost put back together. I will need to do the shift paw adjustment, put the primary chain, clutch assembly and primary cover on. Then the motor will be done and i can put it back in the frame. I am hoping to be able to ride on the 4th of July.

Years ago I asked Dan about what he used for the boot and he said a modified stock boot. Its possible that he there was more demand than supply and he thought he could get away with using just plain hose. It was a good design.

I mentioned when they first came out that they were largely untested. Now through testing its would seem that they are not failsafe or foolproof. Certainly better than stock though.

Stock boots are not guaranteed to split or fail when using the stock airbox and will even last many, many miles when using an unsupported carb (stock airbox deleted). They are just the weakest link.

Thanks for the feedback. I ordered direct from Dan and it did him proud for first 10,000 miles or so. I just need to know what the "slight modifications" to the OEM boot are. I always keep a spare in bike and one to boot (pun intended) in the garage. Cheep as they are, long as I can get them, I will keep a supply. But would rather get my superboot back to super form and back on bike.

Any thoughts, rants, jeers are always welcome.

He used just a stock boot as far as I knew - that's all mine came with - try a stock boot - why would he switch up on a working design?

He shaved off the center ridge (if I remember correctly), so there aren't 2 grooves for 2 clamps.

Shaving off the center ridge makes perfect sense looking at the rubber boot and the clamp, just wanted to be sure before we took a blade to one of mt spares.

EZ, do you know if the center ridge was shaved from the one you got?

It would stand to reason that just a little bit of rubber in the center would keep the edges from getting a perfect hold. Will get to work.

Yuppers - he mills down that outer middle ridge - a lot of & work went into the making of that clamp. I don't think the band in that clamp allows enough room to flex the rubber enough to get it to tear all the way through -

EZ - I really appreciate your taking the time to check that out for me

It makes perfect sense. That original boot he sent had a lot of miles on it and it really did not look that bad. I just replaced it as a part of routine maintenance in prep for a road trip. Always easier to mess with that stuff in your own garage rather than on the side of a road with the hot, sticky sun beating down on you.

I now need to work at the best way to mill that center ridge down so I can put the Superboot back on. Dan did put a lot of thought and work into his design. It passed my road test, I want it back.

My husband just got a new Versys and my suspicion is that he'll be wanting to do an Iron Butt on it for a proper initiation, which means I will be doing another Iron Butt on the Blast and I really don't want to do that without the Superboot.

So any ideas the best way to mill down that ridge? I sent Dan a note. Not sure if he got it.

I apologize for the lengthy post here.
The Magster was having a bit of backfire when starting the bike. It happened irregularly so I suspect a slight timing problem. I have checked everything else I could think might cause the problem. Bike is running very good but the plug was a little lean.
This morning I began doing the static timing, but even with TDC aligned properly, bike in nuetral, kickstand is up, ignition on, I can not get the LED to light on adjustment. I have given the cable as much slack as should be necessary.
Does anyone have an idea what is going on?
I have done this adjustment on her last bike so the procedure is familiar me and I have a repair manual to go by.

Asking the first obvious questions: Do you have the 'correct' TDC mark (the timing cup isnt 180 degrees out)? (Not on the compression stroke.)
The "run" switch is on?
The boot is secure.
Stock jets?(they'll be lean).

Check to see if the vacuum plug at the back of the carb is still plugged. If it has a cap, they split over time. CA bikes have this vacuum port as do the twin carbs. Non CA Blasts dont need, it so you may not have the vacuum port or the nipple may be there, but not hollow.

The ignition module could be going bad. When it acts like timing and its irregular, it points to the module. But I wouldnt go out and buy one just yet.

The TDC mark.....I am thinking back here, is the two dots, not the single line. To static time the engine, put the two dots in the window and rotate the ignition module to where the LED just goes off. The ignition module calculates the ignition on and that cannot be set without the engine running.

Now I may be blank on this right now, is it the two dots are TDC or the line? I believe the line comes into the window first for the timing and the two dots second indicating TDC.

Also an intermmitant backfire, I would be looking at where the ignition module wires go into the timing cone on the cam cover and other ignition related areas where shorts can occur.

Thanks for quick reply GearHeaderiko. Problem solved for now I think. I had all the obvious things checked already. After thinking about the chance that an LED would burn out (they are usually reliable) I decided to bump the rear tire around and see if it would come on. It did! I was able to play between the module and compression stroke at that point to get it set.
Not sure why at TDC I could not get it to adjust enough the first few times but after bumping the tire around with ignition on, it seems pretty close to dead on now.
BTW - I did rejet, Pro-intake, Superboot and D&D exhaust, etc., on this bike too. It is her second Blast now. Great bike but she wears them out sooooooo fast. 55k on an 05 and 27k on an 2009.

Book said it was the line for static and dots for dynamic. I don't have a light so I am not getting into that one for now.
Issue seems like it is solved but I am keeping and eye on it for the next ride. Taking some tools with me too.

Question for y'all....what is the life span of a Blast?

I've got 11k. Should I prepare for a new bike in another 11k or can this one last with nothing but maintenance until 100,K?

I'm poor and will be until the kids are out of college in this economy, so this is my only ride for a long time.
