No problem! Had a great weekend! Had familly come over - my brother in law rides a Sportster and Triumph - cruisers, yet he had a great time on the Red Blast Maul all weekend and even volunteered to bring it to American Sport Bike Night - he loved it and wants to pick up a basket case for his own fun, and a runner for the nephew - I asked him about the XB's and he smiled and said - "...Don't need that much power brother..." - lol - Its not every day I get to hear another Blast roaring beside me, and it was some great fun! Only had to remind him once that the bike has a 5th gear - lol - Gordens been on bikes for years and years - so it was nothing but fun for him and I got the new tires broken in in good time and then some - lol - just in time for the new rearsets that showed up today - already got different pegs and am going to drill up the 1.6 inches recomended for raising them. While I'm at it I'll do the full service thing - plug, plug wire, oil, boot, and adjustment, and just make sure everythings good;0)

Ez in the end of your post you say your going to do the boot. Are you replacing the intake boot or just tightening screws on the bands ?

The boots are cheap, and because I value my engine, and I don't trust aging rubber to not crack, and because a cracked boot was the partial cause of my rebuild in the first place (a hot plug made it worse and together engine went ugh!) - lol - I replace it with the oil and play it safe - takes 5 min. - I figure the boot is the only true weak point in a stock set up and the only thing you'd want to keep an eye on in terms of long term. That said - most people have no problems with theirs through the ownership of their bike as long as they are running stock. Of course everything changes when you modify.;0)

I'm new to this site. Have have my blast for the last year. Bought it used (500mi) Been very happy so far. This winter replaced the old fibre gasket in the valve cover and changed the stock exaust for the Buell pro. Re jet the carb and adjusted just a little richer. I also added a filter and no longer vent the PVC to the carb. While doing the carb stuff I found a small amount of corrosion on the carb side of the rubber connecting hose. Mostly a light coating of aluminum powder. Is this common? This seems to be a great place to indulge my new passion.

Welcome Sandy! I gather you've already done your primary adjustment, before you did the timing - right? I haven't seen that on either of my bikes - perhaps someone else could pipe up - lol - Welcome aboard!

The carb side of the rubber connecting hose?
Do you mean the PVC hose that attaches to the allen head bolt on the carb opening to hold the pvc tube in place? If that is the case the corrosion could have come from the allen head bolt and would be nothing to worry about.
See, Its Friday, I am in the office!

Last summer in an attempt to eliminate the pinging in the mid range I went to high test and adjusted the timing. That coupled with a cooler plug seemed to get rid of most of it. When I was speaking with a friend about it they suggested that it would help to richen things up a bit.

The carb side of the rubber connecting hose?

No between the carb and the head is a piece of hose to connect the two. almost looks like a small section of water hose. In fact the corrosion looks almost like that you might find after removing a water hose from an aluminum radiator.

"I gather you've already done your primary adjustment, before you did the timing - right? "

Not sure what you are refering to. When I had it all apart, I set it to TDC and did the static timing as per the shop manual. Anything else will have to wait until the snow is not 2ft deep and I can get the bike out of the basement. The wife is not keen on my starting it in the house.

Sandy - have you seen the notice in the recalls, etc. section of the Blast forum here reguarding a few 2000 - 2001 Blasts and a minor timing problem - the bulitin goes through the whole procedure to rectify the problem - if it exists (only applied to a few Blasts), and the rest of that noise may be just your primary needing adjustment - a lot of folks mistake it for detination(you can find a procedure for that in the KV section under procedures, etc.) - lol - hope that helps!

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=20164&post=180898#POS T180898

That link has a specific tire mentioned.

Also, click the Knowledge Vault link above, then 'Wheels and Tires' for some reading on the subject.

Some people have also transplanted full-size Buell rear wheels/tires onto the Blast, but that's quite a bit of expense/work for what is basically a cosmetic modification - it surely doesn't help handling having a rear tire that is 100mm wider than the front!

A friend pointed out that HD dumped the Rotax and are going with just the Blast this year in the 550cc field - now does this mean there is a 550cc Blast in our future? Got me to thinking would they do it by bore or do you think they would just stroke it ala XB. Hmmm -

Ez, i would think that they'd most likely stroke it, considering the pistons are stock 1200 size. I've considered stoking mine, but I haven't decided, yet. Still not done with the Fireblast, I'm waiting on the fairing. I'll post pictures when it's finished.

No wine n brag event may have to be cancelled unless we send in our applications....

fyi...I was talking with Mary from BRAG on Friday and only two apps have come in for this event....and I know that Vallejo Buell and others have put in a lot of effort so far...

It would be a shame if it was cancelled since California and the west coast has so many Buell and motorcycle enthusiasts here...

Come on Thumper enthusiasts on the west coast, let's turn in those apps and see how many thumpers show up...

We need to get the word out and call or send in your apps to Mary, BRAG...Thanks, REX

Nothing really - just a check levels and operating condition type of thing. Mentions adjusting the primary but I wouldn't bother unless it was getting noisy.

Hey guys
Long time no post on my part. I got my lil Gizmo back in the road in Feb. Some of you may have heard the i had accident with the bike when some old lady ran a stop sign. So needless to say i have had to do some repairs (on myself and the bike ).
So i painted the frame blueish purple and wet sanded all the gouges out of the plastic and frame. I have to change out the bars, since they are bent. So i am going to paint the Levers and bar the same color as the frame.
I need suggestions on bars. I want less vibrations going threw so any ideas would be great.
Oh and my dam carb fell off last week. That sucked. I was about to let the bike go off the cliff But the dealer let me break in there XB9S demo bike for them for 5 days. That was so much fun.
So there you have it. So any suggestions on the bars that would be great. Thanks Guys

Stock S1 bars were always easily doable - but they won't help much with vibes. Some folks have used the Superbike bars. There was even talk of XB*S bars. If you want less vibes, get some weighed bar ends in whatever bar you choose.

Glad to hear you're ok and back on the bike!

This will sound odd, but I have heard of people using expanding foam insulation. Fill the bars up with the foam insulation. I have not tried this but have been told it helps

never heard of the foam thing before. I figure that Bar ends will do just fine, when i decide on a what bar to use.

Brodie - oil gets changed at EVERY service interval. Cheap insurance. I've always changed my tranny fluid every 2500 miles as well, though I believe the interval for that is 5000 miles.

Dear Moderator:
I have a suggestion
The carb section is great, the info really easy to find. However I have been searching for a little while for the Walmart oil filter number(again) and cannot find it (I have it written down somewhere). I know I have issues but the doctor said I will be fine as soon as the snow melts. I would like to see some of the common items like specs/consummable parts at the heading of the tread topics just like the carb jetting specs at the head of the carb section. Very difinitive specifications that work and or are the baseline for our use. Such info would be useful and additions could be made as time progresses with the addition of additional parts/accessories being found that would fit our beloved Blasts. Thank you.

YEE GADS!!! I now feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of OZ! It was there all along, I just had to ask for it! Thanks again, Now off to American Harley Davidson in Ann Arbor tomorrow to buy 48 primary and 175 main jets to try and darken up the plug a little. I will be looking for some straighter bars while there. They had some killer Buell mechanics shirts there before Christmas for less than $15, and since I am working in the area I guess I have to stop in.
If you all ever end up in Michigan let me know.

I run a 45 primary myself - puts you to the bottom of 14 on your AF - 48 probably wont hurt but you'll be running a bit rich - I just checked my plug on the Black bike - a nice tan color - lol - so I know my jetting is ok for me - lol - What are you running that calls for a 48? - Just curious -

Stock with a Kerker. The plug is too light colored, it could be that way from running in the colder denser Michigan air. As for the primary the bottom end just seems flat and I am hoping I can improve it a little. Maybe I shoudn't go so rich or look someplace else? Timing? Has there been anyone that has had any luck with an accelerator pump?
