Dude! Rocks! That's exactly the performance modification I want to make to mine....probably a left over from my Gold Wing days. What are the brands/models of speakers and amps so I can order them? |

Buell's Motocross Off-Road Machine Concept - Buell's Dirtbike? Radical American motocross racer could still see the light of day By Ben Purvis Photography by Motor Cycle News These never-before-seen patent drawings are our first glimpse of the Buell dirtbike that should have been on sale as you read this. The firm's first-ever off-road machine was announced in March 2007, with plans for it to arrive in dealerships in early '09. But just months later, in September '07, development was halted so the company could focus on the liquid-cooled 1125R sportbike. These crude drawings reveal that, like current Buell streetbikes, the motocrosser also would carry its fuel inside its frame, the tank located behind the engine and above the swingarm pivot. The upper portion of the frame would double as the airbox, with the air filter accessible via a cover in front of the seat. This monocoque design presumably would improve weight distribution and handling, in addition to reducing the number of components to save weight and cut manufacturing costs. These crude drawings don't give any indication of what the Buell dirtbike's bodywork would look like-assuming, that is, it would have any bodywork at all. Just like the firm's streetbikes, Buell's motocross model would carry its fuel load inside the frame-in this case, in the lower spars, behind the engine. The upper portion of the frame doubles as the airbox, to feed oxygen into the 449cc, DOHC Rotax single borrowed from the Can-Am DS450 quad. The engine was to come from Austria's Rotax (which also supplies the 1125R powerplant), and is the same 449cc 4-TEC DOHC single used in the Can-Am DS450 quad. Created by bolting the cylinder head from an Aprilia RSV 1000 R onto a single-cylinder bottom end, this motor should have offered performance to match the predominantly Japanese competition, thanks to fuel injection, a twin-plug cylinder head and high-revving, oversquare design. Buell's motocrosser officially remains on-hold, so the concept is not dead yet. An off-road machine could still help the company claim a niche as the only American-made dirtbike, and more importantly, provide another potential revenue stream to help it weather the challenging and ever-changing motorcycle market. On top of that, company founder Erik Buell is a massive motocross fan and an enthusiastic off-road rider who was saddened to see the project shelved. In other words, this story might not be over yet.

Wouldn't seem to fit in with BMC's new aggressive sportbike only advertising though. But it would fit in with the use of Rotax powerplants. Thanks for posting the article. At least its yellow |

Nice review Andy. PS Reserve is only .55 per the manual, be we know from practical experience that we hit reserve at about 2 gallons (and reserve might be .8). I still wonder how they took the measurement. Tank completely full, fill to just below rubber 'boot', 1 inch below boot, on or off the kickstand? |

I have never been able to get more than 1.5 to 1.8 gallons of gas in the tank. This is after using the reserve. Granted, I don't like filling the tank too full. |

Galic_sauce: Buell riders "don't have any real friends". Does this mean that Blastards that ride together can be real friends now that Buell has dumped us? |

As usual - a Blastard can be whatever they can achieve! It has always been so, and nothing is more fun than the look on their faces when they realize that a Blast just did that! From land speed records, Terry is gunning for the XR750's records with his 720cc Blast, to the custom canyon carvers such as my bike, to cross country riders - what we do and have achieved with the Blast is ours alone! - EZ |

Tortoise, I guess EB was wrong cause I definitely have a friend. He was riding a 91' Katana though. Lookin at his bike with the fairings off of it, It really makes me appreciate the simplicity of my BLAST. |

"Wouldn't seem to fit in with BMC's new aggressive sportbike only advertising though." I swear, everyone bitchin about the Blasts demise has not read or watched any of the ACTUAL stuff from Erik and BMC! Erik clearly defines a sport bike and one with a lot of athleticism- the above bike would certainly fit into that category, and (as much as I enjoyed my Blast), the Blast did not. |

So says you, I say anything you can make the bike do, and it can do it, then it can do it. Give yourself limits, and that is what you will live by. EZ |

Since no one claims the Blast and it's not officially part of the Buell line-up, the advertising hype in the Book of Buell does not apply to those who ride a Blast. Go ahead. Make friends. Wave to others. I dare you. |

I never said anything about limits. Nor did I claim the Blast to not be a good bike. Just stated the facts- BMC disowned the Blast because it is not a sport bike. So no, not says me...says Erik Buell. |

And that is one of the folks I directed that comment towards - lol Indy - if you modify it a tad - lol - it will wheelie in first, second, and third. EZ |

The Blast is still being made for RE programs and ordering, it's just not an H-D or a Buell. How about we put BadWeb where it said Buell? Better check with Blake. |

oh I almost forgot to mention something "interesting"... I use to own a Ninja 250, that I sold to get my Blast, I am still somehow active on the ninja forum (it was a member on there that told me about the badweatherbikers.com BTW ) so anyways, this guy from OK is driving like 6 hrs to here just so he can take my Blast for a spin !!! He is riding here on his V-Storm so him and hubby are planning a little ride. I did not think he was REALLY going to do it but yep, he planning on being here sunday. my point? I guess the Blast will always be an object of curiosity! |

A week ago I sold my '07 Moto Guzzi Nevada looking for a new ride, preferably an updated Blast. The new owner, Frank, flew from MN to Seattle to ride it, buy it, and ride home. Not bad for 61 years young, huh? So today I bought, from Craigslist, an '05 Moto Guzzi Nevada complete with bags and shield and improved shocks AND 500 less miles (3,720) and saved (after taxes) almost $300. So it looks like my Buell days are truly behind me, darn. Gas mileage is usually in the mid 50's and the motor is rock solid. 400# dry. It belonged to the wife of a friend who rides a bigger Guzzi. His wife just bought a Monster 640.
I hope Buell rethinks his "club" policy and provides something for us old guys who like lower and slower and lighter. Until then, CIAO! |
